Actually got back late Sunday, but DD's birthday, laundry, and yard work have kept me tied up.

After spending three nights at Universal's Porofino Bay, we were off to four nights at the cabins at Ft. Wilderness June 5-9. We had always thought these looked fun and since we were able to get a rate of $159, we decided to try one this year. My kids (DS-15, DS-12, DD-9, and DS-2) got a real kick out of the place. There is so much to do at Ft. Wilderness that we spent much less time at the parks than we had planned. The 2 y.o. loved the petting zoo:p He rode a pony and spent the entire time yelling, "Yee-haw!"
We liked the way the woods came right up to the cabin. It was such a relaxing atmosphere. Even though I am usually totally against cooking on vacation, we did cook weiners and roast marshmallows on the grill a couple of times. The next day the ashes were wisked away and the dishes were cleaned. It was great and a real money saver:D
We had a car, so we didn't experience the Disney Transportation much except to catch the boat to the Magic Kingdom. The cabins are served by both the purple and orange lines so the waits were quite short. You could actually see the bus stop from our cabin (2604) and there seemed to be busses stopping constantly..
The CM's were great from check-in to departure.

On Sunday, June 9, we checked into the Beach Club for five nights. We had requested garden view with a full balcony and were given room 2579 overlooking the garden courtyard and volleyball court. We also had a pretty decent view of the lake from the balcony. The room was clean and in generally good repair. My only quibbles were a very rusted fire sprinkler in the bathroom along with rust stains on the bathroom tiles that appeared to run down from the door hinges. Also there were tons of bird droppings on the balcony railing and paint chips that had peeled of the gutters would land on the balcony.
We have stayed at the Yacht Club twice and truly found the Beach Club to have a more laid-back atmosphere with more kids to be found and generally a higher noise level.
Service was great. Any request or question we had was taken care of immediately.
Storm-Along-Bay was never crowded when we visited, possibly due to the on and off again rain throughout our stay. There does seem to be a lot less sand on the bottom than during our previous stays.
Of course, you can't beat the location. As one of the guidebooks says, "If you were any closer to Epcot, they would charge you admission!" I love the location, I love the architecture, I love the decor, and I love the landscaping. Two things I don't love are the lack of quick food, particularly in the evenings and the way the bathroom door closes so that you practically have to stand in the tub to close it:rolleyes:

Since our AP's didn't expire until the 15th, we decided to spend one more night and got a room at Dixie Landings (Riverside). I really love that place:) although I think I had forgotten about the morning rush on the coffee machines at the food court;)

Glad to hear that you enjoyed FW. We were there 2 yrs ago and stayed in cabin 2604! What a great location! My children also enjoyed the Petting Farm and pony rides. FW is soooo relaxing after a long day at the parks.

Hi Dixie Luvr 98,

We returned from WDW in May and also had a wonderful time. I have a few questions for you. We are a family of 4 now, but after feeling sick the whole time we were at WDW, I went to the Dr. Well the surprise of our life was told to us---we are having twins!!
After letting this set in for a few days, I thought about our WDW vaction. Where will we stay on property with a family of 6?? Well, you are a family of 6, how were you able to stay at BC and at Dixie?? How did you like FW cabins? Please let me know!

Amy,

Congrats on the upcoming double blessing!:)

We were able to stay at the BC and DxL because the youngest is under 3. The room capacity is five plus a child under three in a crib. Also DD is nine, which is I believe the maximum age for sleeping in the trundle beds at Alligator Bayou.
After the youngest hits his third birthday, we will probably watch for a good rate and book two rooms at a moderate and only stay at deluxes when the entire family can't go.
We are also considering buying into the DVC with enough points to spend a week at a 2BR.

Dixie Luvr 98,
I was actually considering BC or FW Cabins for a trip in October. We have 3 kids: DD(11), DS(9), DS(3). Hopefully we will stay for a whole week, but not sure with the older kids soccer schedule. Which did you enjoy best if you could only stay at one place? We did stay at AKL with the whole family in Jan & loved it. We visited the WL & loved the way it looked. Thought maybe the cabins would be a good idea since we have 5 people. I don't think we would cook alot except maybe breakfast & maybe a couple other times. We tend to eat out alot.
Thanks for any help you can give.

DISMOMof3,

I asked my kids which of the two resorts they would stay at if they had to chose one. The 15 y.o. said Beach Club and the 12 & 9 y.o.'s both picked the Ft. Wilderness Cabins as I'm sure the 2 y.o. would. If you are going to spend a good deal of time at your resort, there is just so much to do at Ft. Wilderness:) It is such a tranquil atmosphere and the kitchen makes it easy to fix snacks or a quick breakfast. The extra room is great and my kids loved the bunkbeds. The only complaint they had was the pool tended to be crowded, possibly because River Country was closed.

If you are going to concentrate on the parks, Beach Club has such a great central location. Of course, if your kids are into swimming and pools, Storm-Along-Bay can't be beat. It also has a lot more shallow areas for your three year-old to enjoy.

I really just depends on what kind of vacation your looking for;)

Hi all!

Dixie Luvr I was just wondering if you could answer a couple of questions for me. My fiance and I are getting married at WDW (sometime between the end of next Oct. and early Dec.) and we just thought about renting one of the cabins for our first few nights before the wedding- mainly for the added space for all the wedding stuff- and also because we wanted to have a rehersal that's very different then our wedding day. So we thought the Cabins would be perfect for a BBQ Party for both our families and the wedding party. I stayed in a cabin years ago.. long before they had the "log" like siding, and can't remember the bed sizes and such. Also is there a picnic table and BBQ right outside each unit? We were also planning on using the cabin the night before the wedding for my Girls Only Nite. Well I think that's it for now, thanks so much!

PrincessTanyuhKaypoo,

Congratulations! You are so lucky to be getting married at WDW:p
In the cabins there is a pull-down Murphy bed in the living room and a double bed and set of bunkbeds in the bedroom.
There is a good sized picnic table on the deck. The grill is located just off the deck at the foot of the steps.

I have never stayed at the BC - hopefully in Nov.- I'm waiting for codes but.........

The FW cabins are awesome. We have stayed there numerous times. It is so peaceful & quiet. There are many, many things to do. My kids enjoy just going to the basketball court near the small pool. We stayed at the CR last year & my kids wanted to take the boat to FW just to "see it". Even with CR being a deluxe they longed to be in FW.

Being at FW reiterates what I always tell people - WDW is much more than just amusement parks. It is a resort w/ so much to do. I have never heard of anyone that has not enjoyed FW.

sounds like you had a wonderful trip!
the cabins must have been a lot of fun, what else did you do at FW other than pony rides?

the BC is going to be completely rehabed in just a few months, so next time you stay there, there won't be any rust in the bathroom! :)

Laura :)

Glad you had a good trip! I am anxious to try the Yacht & Beach Clubs, I've never stayed there. Hope they "fix" everything when they renovate!

DisneyMomof3.
FW cabins are a wonderful place to stay with families that have young children. Your kids are the perfect age to love FW. We used to stay at FW trailers before they had the cabins, when my kids were young and they loved it. We used to rent the bikes from the bike barn for our entire stay and the kids had a blast exploring all over FW, going to the store, etc. We also rented a golf cart and we all had a blast with that! Enjoy!

I was wondering if you could compare you experience with disney hotels to your experience at portofino bay? What did you think of pfb? I realize this is the "disney" resort board, but would like an opionion of someone who had a good experience at wdw resorts. Thank you, MKY :)
