Back from Disneyland - Bad trip over spring break

We spent last weekend and Monday at the parks. We had 6 day park hoppers, but I just couldn't take another day at the parks, so we left first thing Tuesday morning with three days still remaining on our park hoppers. It's my fault for trying to do a Disneyland trip over spring break, but I guess I just didn't realize how bad it would be. Many things went wrong for us, but the crowds were simply ridiculous. Please keep in mind, I am not blaming Disney for being popular!

It's been quite a few years since I have been to Disneyland and DCA, but my kids are now old enough where I thought they would enjoy the rides more than they did when they were younger. I was wrong...they are still scared of all the "good" rides, and bored with the "slow" rides. My kids (ages 10 and 13) were still terrified by a majority of the rides and refused to go on most of them. The few I forced them to go on (the Ferris wheel and Thunder Mountain) were not good and my 13 year old daughter even started crying out of fear on the ferris wheel. I learned a hard and expensive lesson...that my family is just not a theme park type of family. I am the only one who likes rides apparently. My wife gets sick on rides and gets freaked out by the animatronic characters in most of the rides.

On our first day (Saturday), we were waiting to board the monorail in Tomorrowland, and when the gate opened, my 10 year old son's finger was right near the hinge of the gate. There was a very sharp edge of layers of paint on the hinge and his finger got cut pretty badly when the crowd pushed on through the gate and opened it all the way...rotating his finger around the sharp edge of the paint layers. They stopped the monorail for about 10 minutes and called in one of the Disneyland nurses. They told us we needed to go have it checked out further, so we had to go drop $250 in the local ER and wait for four hours while he got a couple of stitches. After about $30 in cab fare back to the park my son was done for the day. So, that wasn't a good way to start the first day.

It was an expensive lesson learned that my family still doesn't like amusement rides or parks, and the crowd levels simply made it unbearable. I closed down the park each night when the lines lightened up around 10:30-Midnight. They even extended the closing time on Monday from 11pm to midnight due to the large crowds. Moving between the "hub" area and any of the "land" areas was a nightmare...especially around the fireworks or fantasia. Simply impossible to move at certain times!

We also stayed at a local RV park in our motorhome. The RV park was just far enough away to be difficult to walk back and forth from, and yet still too close to make waiting or paying for shuttles or buses a little much. If I ever come back to Disneyland, it will have to be at one of the hotels directly across the street from the main gate.

I think we will stick to other vacations from now on and I'll have to try Disney going solo on a Wednesday in mid January to avoid the crowds! I guess my kids didn't inherit my love for rides and Disneyland :(

Yeah I was going to mention a Disney Cruise as well???? It's a great idea. :)

I'm sorry that your trip wasn't as magical as you hoped. How's your tough man handling now? That could have ruined my whole trip for him right there, and had nothing to do with your efforts. Although I am sure you got a few pictures with some big smiles and had a few laughs with your family. Did you see any shows when you were there?

Wow, what a bummer about your trip!! We have done spring break trips in the past & swore we'd never go during that time again!! We found getting from one place to the next was just painful!! They needed FP's for food lines & bathrooms!! :rotfl: So I totally understand the frustrations there!!

Your poor son!!! Did he end up with stitches?? How's he doing now??

I'm very lucky that my kids LOVE the rides....but we spend half of our time doing the non-ride things as well. We love the entertainment, shows, Animation Building & all it's offerings, fireworks, WoC, Fantasmic, 3-D movies, etc. When the ride lines were brutal, we found other things to keep us busy & happy.

I'm sorry they don't feel the same about Disneyland as you do....that makes it tough!!

Hopefully you'll find a happy balance so you'll get your DL time & still have a fun vacation with the family.

Oh that's too too bad. And tearing open a finger certainly isn't a good trip regardless of crowds.

My kids are afraid of the big rides too but even more terrified and impatient with the crowds. If it does get a little uncomfortable, we then either go over to CA or in DL go on the B list rides such as the train, Monorail, Main Street Cars, catch a show, souvenir shop, have ice cream, use Fastpasses, go back and swim at the hotel, etc. We never ever go during "peak" times and I'm certain that if we ever did, nobody would be a Disney fan from our house.

Do try sometime to go in a less crowded time. You'll have such a better experience. We don't like long walks to the park either, so we opt for a hotel farther out that uses ART (never had a problem since we go in off times) and we get complementary breakfast and dinner too (if you do in fact go on a Wednesday).

Try try again!

I have to say yes that RV park is pretty far to walk to and from ..an yes it's not a good idea to even try and go from one land to anoher during fireworks, it's is somethimes impossible and best to just stay in the area you are in and do what ever rides are there.. and then hang back a bit after fireworks because it gets busy when all 1 thousand firework watchers try to get outta the park at one time. I'm sorry you made the mistake of going during spring break, i'm sure you won't do it again,. In that case don't go during new years eve also! That is even worse! I;m sorry about the finger, some people are rude when getting on the monorail they just have no desency(sp?) for the people around them

That's too bad that your family doesn't enjoy Disney parks the way you do. I once "joked" with my husband while we visited Disneyland for his first time that if he didn't like it the engagement was off. Thankfully he loves it as much as I do and our kids go several times a month and love it as well.

As for the crowds the weekend was probably worse but we went wednesday afternoon and honestly it wasn't bad at all. Busy but not over crowded by any means. I supposed you will just have to find other vacations to take with your family. Hawaii perhaps or Europe? A disney cruise like some mentioned might be a nice compromise.

So sorry about his finger getting cut as well. That's too bad. I really hope your next family vacation goes well and everyone is able to enjoy it! :)

We were there this week as well. The crowds at times were almost unbearable. The Fastpass system was down half the time. The best part of it was that we (for once) utilized Magic Morning and was able to do 4 rides in that one hour. We chatted it up with one of the CM in the stores and they were shocked at how busy it was. On Monday and Tuesday, they were supposed to close at 11, but ended up extending the park hours to midnight.

We always seem to have something happen when we are there but we slog our way through it. Time to try and find something different for your vacation destination. I still do not understand why people even try spring break, hope things go better for you.

We had gone in March before and it wasn't bad. We did not realize that most of the west coast was on spring break when we booked. We still had a great time. Luckily for us, we are planning a Sept trip to make up for it and to see our newly laid paving stone

I'm so sorry you had such a bad time! My family feels the same way about crowds, so we're not going in high season.I don't think even the best touring plan would convince my sister to go on a 9 or 10 day on the crowd calendar. I hope your sons' finger is healing. :(

I'm sorry you had such a bad time and hope your son's finger heals quickly. We were there last weekend as well. We always go during spring break. Saturday was a nightmare between the crowds and rides being down but we kept busy and still enjoyed ourselves. Honestly, it seemed like even the food wasn't quite as good at our favorite places as it usually is this time around.

Hopefully you can find a vacation that suits your family better.

Yikes! How aweful for you and especially your little one! We get there on Monday and after reading your post I am a bit nervous about the crowds! :(

Oh my goodness, what a nightmare.

I am so sorry you had a crappy vacation. I have been there and done that, with trips to the ER, etc, but never at Disney.

I hope it didn't ruin the place for you forever! (Don't worry, I still love Maui even though I spent a night in the ER there..... so you will recover.)

Good luck with your next vacation!!!

One of my daughters got smacked by a stroller nazi last year and we had to go for stitches. Every year it seems to be something, we just do the best we can. We go during August it is pretty busy, we try to make the best of it. Again, so you had a bad experience.
