We’re back from an amazing trip. Spent time in Hollywood/Santa Monica and then 4 days at Disney (Tues Aug 29 - Fri Sept 1). I’ll write a full trip report with pictures but thought I’d report back on a few thoughts as I always like reading other people’s comments (and it helps with post Disney blues). As a background, we’ve been to WDW once in 2014 and this was our first Disneyland trip. DH and I came with our two kids DS12 and DD8.

The Heat
It was crazy hot (high 30s)….but dry heat so as soon as the sun went down, it was comfortable. Perhaps it helped lessen the crowds as a lot of the non-headliners were basically walk on rides. What helped as well was that a lot of queues are inside (e.g. Indiana, part of Pirates, Monsters, Guardians, Toy Story, Frozen show, etc). And others at least are partly shaded depending on where you are standing.

We carried collapsible water bottles that were light that we just refilled at water fountains and also had cooling towels around our necks (which actually help).

The other helpful thing is that you can go up to any Quick Service and ask for ice water for free. (I forgot this until day 3 of our trip).

As a side note…we went to Universal before the heat wave but it gets the high five for helping with the heat. They have misting areas all over including in the ride queues.

Our Hotel
We stayed at Desert Inn and Suites in a Parlour suite. The hotel was right across the street which was fantastic.

I was a bit nervous based on mixed reviews but we were very happy with it. It had a main room with 2 beds plus a sofa bed in the front room. This was great as it meant both our kids got their own bed (and tv…even though they often both watched the same show). There were lots of drawers and desk space to spread out our things (I semi-unpack). I the most picky with the washroom. The sink is outside of the toilet/shower area which makes it more efficient for getting ready. There was lots of space to put all toiletries and they provided many towels (unlike most hotels where we need to request more).

A basic breakfast was provided. For those looking for hot items you won’t find any here (aside from make your own oatmeal) but it was fine for us…toast, cereal, pastries, hard boiled egg and 2 fruit choices. The only thing missing was perhaps a yogurt but it kept us full enough until lunch time.

Rides
Some rides are also at Disney World and some are completely new. My favorites:

Radiator Springs – so fun and it was all of our favorite ride! Rode this 4 times using FastPass and one with a 15 minutes wait (the ride must have just started up after breaking down as 15 minutes is unheard of). The beginning is so cute with the theming (and beautiful outside with the mountains) and the race is super fun. We got some pretty funny photos with the first one, three of us having the look of death on our faces.

Indiana Jones – also tons of fun. It’s a rough jeep riding through. The affects with the huge bolder coming at you is awesome. We also rode this each day using FastPass.

Big Thunder – one of my favorites at WDW and same at Disneyland. The scenery is quite beautiful and the ride lots of fun. I can’t typically ride roller-coasters due to eye issues but since it doesn’t have any big drops (just twists and turns), it’s ok. It’s a bit smoother than WDW. It was one of my daughter’s favorites.

Pirates – I found this one ok at WDW but loved it at Disneyland. Not sure if I just didn’t mind the drops as much or found a lot more to look at after the drops. On our last day (Fri Sept 1), we went to it first thing and we got the whole boat to ourselves. Plus the boat ahead of us was empty, which also meant that we didn’t get the ‘warning screams’ that the drop was coming…lol.

Soarin – This is another ride that I wasn’t completely wow’ed at when we went to WDW but I loved it at DCA. This FastPass ran out the quickest during our trip due to them only running one side, but we just watched it and booked it early (or to work without timing). Rode it twice during our trip. Could have rode it more but my family liked it but didn’t love it like I did so twice was enough for them.

Guardians – I can’t comment personally as this is one of the rides that I avoided, but my son LOVED it. On contrast, my younger one came out crying. Poor thing. My husband also went on only because he is a marvel fan (but his stomach is sensitive so was surprised he said he’d try it).

Splash – Only my son rode this but am mentioning it since it's his favourite ride. He did comment that WDW is better as that one has a story, whereas Disneyland was more vague. But he still loved the ride and went on it multiple times (3 times in a row our last day). He certainly is braver than the rest of us. That drop looked huge!

Frozen Show – Ok…so not a ride, but it deserves a call out. This was like a true Broadway show and was really impressed. The acting/singing/costumes/set were amazing and the way that the did the affects with the ice and the bridge was pretty cool. My daughter says she’s at the end of the princess phase (too old for that), but it’s cute how Disney brings out the princess in all of us. She was back to loving it which was cool to see. As a note, we got there 1hr early and so my DD and I were able to sit front row, but we could have come much later and gotten a decent seat too (but it did fill up).

Haunted Mansion – Boo hoo…my favorite ride at WDW and it was closed due the Halloween overlay. Looked cool from the outside though.

MaxPass
First day we didn’t use MaxPass. I’m a planner so I like the WDW way of booking 3 FastPass rides even before you arrive at Disney. I wondered how I would like Disneyland’s legacy FastPass system of having to go to each ride. We did find it a bit of a pain…especially for rides such as Toy Story at DCA where it is out of the way (and no other rides in the area aside from Ariel interested us). Then as another example, we just completed a FastPass ride and could have booked another one but it was getting late so we wanted to grab lunch. To add to it, we were switching parks after lunch so we lost time with no FastPass booked.

Thus, we decided to bite the bullet and get MaxPass for our next 3 days. It does add up ($10 x 4 of us, x 3 days)….but sooo worth it. We would enter the park, we’d purchase MaxPass and then 30 seconds later (of as soon as the park officially opened for when we rope dropped), we’d have a FastPass booked. Then as soon as the next window opened up, we’d book another one (even better effect if the next ride was at the other park). We did this for all headliners and it saved us tons of time. I noticed too that if the ride was more than 2hrs (e.g. Soarin, Guardians, RSR), then the next window was 1.5 hrs later and not the normal 2hrs. Thus, this is the most efficient FastPass system. I do prefer WDW’s FastPass+ over Disneyland’s manual FastPass.

P.S. - We also got tons of great PhotoPass photos which we wouldn't have had otherwise.

Sounds like an amazing trip! We stayed at Desert Inn & Suites and the space alone was worth the stay. And while the furnishings were old, it was very clean.
I'm glad they fixed the boulder on Indy...it wasn't working when we were there in the beginning of August.
Glad you handled the heat and had a great Disney experience!!

Can you keep booking fp at wdw? Or is dlr better for getting more fp per day?

At WDW, you can book 3 FastPass rides online before you go. Then once you complete those rides, you can go the kiosk and book another one. The only thing we found is that the times were more spread out so by the time you completed the third one, the good ones were taken (this is in the case where we booked a headliner such as Mine Train or Anna and Elsa meet and greet).

With DL, the FastPass times are sequential until they run out so you seem to get through more a day (esp with MaxPass)

Ha ha...very true. The furniture at Desert Inn isn't the nicest or newest, but it was fine. I was worried about the beds as some have said they are too hard, but we had no issues. I'm with you...it was very clean.

Oh no...the boulder wasn't working? That part was super cool!

Thanks for your note.

Meals
We had one meal booked per day for dinner (that’s our way to sit down and relax for a few minutes). Below is what we tried.

Goofy’s Kitchen (character meal)– Good selection of food. It reminded me of Chef Mickey’s at WDW. Good character interaction with the standard Disney characters, but from what I’ve read the other character meals have more and different/unique characters. The buffet was pretty big with something for us and for our picky kids (the kids mac and cheese was quite yummy). It was pricey (esp for dinner) but we were glad we booked it. Unfortunately this was the one day we didn’t have PhotoPass so we didn’t get a copy of the professional picture taken at entry (i.e. we weren’t spending $37 USD for it). However, we did ensure that the PhotoPass photographer took one with our camera.

Cafe Orleans – Best meal. As recommended on here, we ordered the Monte Cristos (DD and I shared, DS had one, and DH had the meat one). Super yummy. DS said it was like having dessert for dinner since outside was almost like a donut. We also shared the pomme frittes. I understand why everyone talks about them.

WOC Dessert Party – Ok…so not exactly ‘dinner’ but it was our dinner. We all liked the sweets. In my opinion, the jelly filled shortbread cookie was the best. The cheeses were good too. Didn’t touch the bread much. It also came with (unlimted?) drinks. DH got a beer and then soda. I had two of those blue drinks. We also all got bottled water. Our kids loved the glowing cups. DD insisted on bringing hers home. It's so big and delicate that it was her responsiblity and thus it became her carry on bag on the plane. (As a note, we ate dinner both nights at home in the dark so she could use it again...lol).

River Belle Terrace (Fantasmic Dining Package) – It was a limited menu and all items seemed to have the same BBQ sauce but it was quite good. I had the Tofu, DS had the ribs and DH had the chicken sandwich. Our DD8 also had the ribs but found it too spicy and didn’t like the sides so she didn’t eat anything. When the server returned for our dessert order, I commented that it was spicy for our little one. He asked if she would like the mac & cheese, which was nice as I wasn’t expecting that (I just mentioned so he would know to warn parents in the future). So then she got the mac & cheese plate. It was super cheesy but quite good. The desserts were good too. I had read complaints on here of the butterscotch pudding being boring but it was actually really tasty (DH and DD had it).

Food is pricey, including the quick service meals. We tried places like Plaza Inn (quite good), Jolly Holiday (super small kids portions that would feed a 3 year old at most, and DH didn’t love his meal…mine was just ok), Award Weiners in DCA (which had a really good Portobello mushroom sandwich), and I tried Pacific Wharf (yummy sourdough soup bowls…even though it was 100 degrees)…while DH and DD had turkey legs from Don Tomas vendor and DS had hotdog from nearby vendor.

Oh, and I can't forget the snacks. We weren't leaving without having a Dole Whip. We also tried the Frozen Lemonade which was nice on a hot day, and a Mickey Bar. And we couldn't return home without some snacks to go (rice crispy squares and popcorn)

World of Color
What to say but ‘wow…really cool show’. It was beautiful with the colorful fountains and lights and then the projections. Our kids WOC cups even flashed along to the show. Disney knows how to do things. DH commented that he was surprised not to see Frozen characters in the show so not sure if its just been awhile since it’s been updated or they just didn’t include. I highly recommend catching the show if you can.

I went back and forth deciding between dinner package, FastPass or dessert party and am happy with the decision to do the dessert party. We lined up about 45 minutes early (I had the time wrong…meant to line up 30 minutes early). We were 3rd in line and managed to get a high top table in front row (as recommended on here). It was great to sit down and I do see what others meant by possibly being blocked by all the standing people that are taller or who put a child on their shoulders in in the dining or FastPass sections. We had zero issues seeing.

Fantasmic
We had the dining package so after dinner we enjoyed some rides an then lined up 1hr early. They let us in shortly afterwards and our kids ran to a spot on the rail near the Hungry Bear standing section (I would have been more centered but they wanted to be in the front row). I did find the rail annoying during the show, plus being near the rail we were lightly sprayed by the water. (It was fine for the show but I found the spray annoying during fireworks as it was constant and so we got quite wet…and cold).

As for the show, it was good. However, I seem to remember more characters in the show at WDW. At Disneyland, it was more projections. The location of Fantasmic at Disneyland is nice, and neat how you can go on the same river boat during that day that is in the show at night…and you’re constantly passing the area, which is quite peaceful.

The show was followed by fireworks which was good (aside from the constant spray at our location). We couldn't see the fireworks near the castle but did see the ones further back so it was fine. Disney does things top notch.

Disneyland vs Disney World
It’s hard to say which is better as they are both amazing but while my family likes Disney World a touch better (mostly due to the crowds more spread out and being immersed in Disney), I almost prefer Disneyland. I really like how the 2 parks are across from each other and you can hop back and forth between them. I think as well, the whole Cars Land puts me slightly over the fence on the Disneyland side. It was just so impressive to be in Radiator Springs. I mean, talk about theming.

As others have said, I agree that Pirates is better at Disneyland and my son agrees that Splash is better at WDW. The castle is bigger at WDW but I still love the detail of the Disneyland one and it was pretty in pink, especially at night. Having said that, I do have a picture that is almost comical as you see down Main Street, but with this teeny tiny castle in the background (looks extra small from far back). Main Street does feel the same.

There seemed to be more characters roaming at Disneyland which was nice. Minnie Mouse even took my daughter’s hand at DCA and walked with her (to her designated spot for pictures). It was sweet. I don’t think that would happen at WDW as they have their character meeting spots and from what I read, they use the underground system to get to the locations.

DD and I really missed Haunted Mansion (and the Halloween version must be really cool!). For the same reason, we missed Space Mountain.

The detail of all the buildings and rides at both locations is amazing. That’s partly what gives the place the magic. It just feels so real, but yet in this make believe perfect place.

We’re form Ontario and thus if (no “when”) we do Disney again, it’s likely to be Disney World (just gotta figure out when since summer in Orlando will be like Anaheim plus humidity plus thunderstorms which is no fun). There really is something magical that keeps bringing you back. Guess by the time we return Star Wars land will be done so can only imagine how impressive that expanded area will be. Disney doesn’t do things small or with lack of thought.

I remember your threads over the last several months. Glad you guys had a great time! It definitely seems like you hit all the highlights.

Sounds like a fun trip! Funny you mentioned misters..we were there last week also and I asked a CM why DL doesn't have misters. Even just downtown. She said they were told it doesn't look good. That shocked me. How do misters not look good? It was so hot I wouldn't care what it looked like. Even Scottsdale, AZ, has misters and they're all about looking good :). I was also shocked that security wasn't allowed water bottles because of the way it looked, I may write to complain about that. Withholding water to employees on 100 degree days isn't cool.

Funny as my first thought of seeing the misters at Universal wasn't "gosh those are ugly". We went to Universal just before the heat wave but it did pop out as a great idea...and sure missed them at Disney. Interesting too about water bottles.
