We spent 5 nights last week in a two-bedroom concierge unit at AKV. We arrived on Saturday the 15th and left on Thursday the 20th. We really hated to leave and wished that we could have stayed for the whole week. But, church choir duties called.

Let me start by saying that we are completely spoiled now by the concierge treatment and by the joys of staying at AKV. We can only hope that the experiment with the concierge units at AKV leads DVC to introduce concierge units in other resorts (at least in the resorts linked to hotels).

We had a handicap-accessible unit, so the layout was not consistent with the floorplans we had seen. I'm not sure why we got the accessible unit and we would have preferred a regular unit, but we had a Sunset Savanah view, which was very cool. Our daughters (2 and 4) loved to sit out on the balcony and watch the animals when we were in the unit. The units have interesting furniture and decor, and the dishware is especially nice. Our master bathroom, being accessible, was a bit disappointing because we did not get the big shower.

The concierge service was excellent, very attentive and friendly. Everyone working in the Kilimanjaro Lounge went out of his or her way to help. The breakfast each morning was excellent (we especially loved the quinoa cereal and our girls loved the Fruit Loops). The cocktail hour snacks were substantial enough to serve as dinner, and the best of the Boma desserts made their way up for the evening sweets. We enjoyed the Sunrise Safari on Sunday morning and were surprised how reasonably priced it was, especially with the included breakfast at Tusker House.

This was our first visit to AKV or AKL. Having the savanah view was a real plus. I had to work late most nights, and as I worked I could hear the animals out on the savanah. It reminded me of my tented safair in Tanzania, when I would stay up each night just to listen to the sounds of the savanah. We loved the quiet, somewhat out of the way location. We had never really used the Disney transportation system before, but we shall use it much more on future visits. We ended up regretting renting a car for our stay, especially given how expensive cars were last week. We could have gotten by very nicely with the buses and an occasional taxi.

We had another great dinner at Boma. Honestly, we could live on the Boma soups alone. So good. We had the Cinderella's Happily Ever After Dinner at 1900 Parkfare and afternoon tea at the Garden Court, both at the Grand Floridian. (The afternoon tea had the potential for disaster with our girls, but with a little patience and creativity from our server we ended up having a great time. Our server brought them apple juice in a teapot and they enjoyed serving themselves their "apple tea.") We had our usual lunch at Crystal Palace, and the girls managed to join the Pooh parade twice. We also had a spur of the moment lunch at Marrakesh in Epcot when we went for the opening of the Flower and Garden Festival.

I have to say, I noticed significantly increased attention to detail, service and courtesy at every turn of our trip. My partner and I both remarked how attentive and helpful every CM seemed to be, from the valets (who gave us some pointers on how to avoid valet parking fees!), to the hotel staff, to the restaurant servers, to the folks in the parks.

We enjoyed the zero entry pool with slide (the Uzima Pool) at AKL. We can only imagine how neat the new water amenities at Kidani House will be. I know that it might be considered sacrilege, but we did spend a day at the new SeaWorld water park, Aquatica. While the theming (Australian outback) is not quite equal that of the Disney waterparks, the facilities are incredible, especially some of the adult slides and the childrens' facilities. We rented a four-person cabana for the day, which was secluded and quiet. We loved this waterpark and will make it a regular part of our Orlando circuit.

It was a great five days. We might not have gotten much rest, but we did have a lot of fun and a lot of enjoyable family time together.

Oh thats sounds Heavenly.
I really wanted to stay concierge but all we could get was a Value studio;) .
But I will take it.This will be our fist stay ever at AK and we are super excited:thumbsup2

Your trip sounds wonderful!

If you wouldn't mind, what was your room number? And could you describe the HA bathroom? I'm trying to put together a list of the HA rooms at AKV (Jambo House at least). From what I've heard, two of the 2BR lockoffs in Concierge are HA. One has a roll-in shower and no tub in the master bath. I don't have a good description of the other HA room and it sounds like that was the room you had.

You mentioned you did not have a big shower. Almost all of the master bathrooms in the 1BR/2BRs in Jambo House have a combined tub and shower rather than a separate tub and shower stall like the other DVC resorts. Some of the HA rooms have a roll-in shower but that is instead of rather than in addition to a tub. Since the Jambo House villas were created by converting AKL hotel rooms, I guess there wasn't room to provide both a whirlpool tub and a shower stall in the master baths. The Kidani Village 1BR/2BRs will have a large shower stall and a whirlpool tub.

thanks for the report....AKV concierge sounds awesome.

Can you tell me about the waterpark....Is it "IN" seaworld?
What about this Cabana you rented.....Is this a shady spot to hang out?
any wave pool?
Is this included with a Seaworld admission?
thanks
Kerri

Your trip sounds wonderful. I'm hoping to snag a 1BR for next January but have
to wait until the 7 month window which is JUNE. I hope I can get one. I could
live on Boma food too. Just amazing. :thumbsup2

Thanks, I'm about 21 days from my after cruise CL stay at AKV so this really helped to add to my excitement. I'm glad you enjoyed all aspects of your vacation and I agree that the sunrise safari is a good value.

Thanks for the trip report! We are leaving in 18 days for our 5 night trip and we are so psyched up for the sunrise safari and the concierge club experience!

We were in AKV concierge at the begining of the month. I have a couple of questions for you.

You say the Tusker House breakfast was good on the sunrise safari, but we had breakfast in the Pizzafari dining room, not Tusker House.

Did you get turn down service? We actually only got it one night, and I wondered if it had been dropped for DVC members. We were on the other side of the lobby from you with a pool view. Not a HA unit, but we did not have a walk in shower either. Instead, the shower was in the big tub. I loved the decor, but thought the bathroom was difficult lighting for makeup application etc.

Sounds like you guys had an awesome trip. We have 2bd AKV concierge room booked for our trip in Oct 08. Hopefully we will get savanah view. What room number were you in?

I was at AKV last week, but not concierge. The lighting in the bathroom is TERRIBLE at the mirror.

We'll be back at AKV in mid-April for a concierge stay so I'm looking forward to that. We're doing the sunrise safari again but skipping the afternoon safari with Jiko dinner this time. I think we'll do that again in the future once Kidani is done and the savannas are back in full force.

Thanks for the report. I agree with you about the Boma soups-awesome!

Thanks for the report. I agree with you about the Boma soups-awesome!

The quick serve restaurant (Tusker House is it?) also has some of the Boma soups and stews on its menu. Great way to get a soup fix for lunch! :thumbsup2 I agree - they are awesome!

Thanks so much for your trip report. I really enjoyed it. I'm hoping for Concierge someday so I can the Safaris.

the valets (who gave us some pointers on how to avoid valet parking fees!)

Um, I thought DVC members get FREE (+ tip) valet parking at all resorts just by showing your blue DVC member card?? :confused3

Can you share what pointers the valet gave? :teacher: ;)

Thanks for the trip report! Glad to hear about Aquatica as dh and I are trying it out in 13...yes count them 13 days woowiththehoo! We were also fortunate enough to get AKV concierge for the 2 days before we cruise. Here is wishing for some cushy treatment;)

Not sure what pointers the valet gave, but DVC members get free valet parking at DVC resorts. We do not get free valet parking at resorts that do not have DVC, such as Grand Floridian.
I'm also interested in any pointers the valet gave.:)

It was an awesome trip and we enjoyed our room very much. Here are some additional thoughts in response to some of the questions.

Lighting: I don't know why I didn't mention this in my original message. The lighting in the AKV units is TERRIBLE. Maybe Disney wanted to make conditions just like the way things can be in Kenya and Tanzania, but some more light would have been welcome. None of us use make-up, so we can't comment on the appropriateness of the lighting for that, but it was no picnic trying to read or shave. And I had to work each night on the computer, and the lighting was not good for the computer. Let's hope that the Kindani units have better lighting. But I'd stay in the dark to stay concierge again.

Bathroom Layout: The unit we had was a lock-off. Only the 1-bedroom side was HA. The bathroom had no normal doors, only some sliders, but it was more open than we wanted. (My partner had to stand decoy the night our babysitter came so that I could cross from the bathroom to the bedroom.) The tub was a normal jetted single tub with a hand held shower and lots of grab bars, but the person using it would have to be able to climb into or be lifted into a standard tub. The sink was in an alcove between the bedroom and the room with the tub and toilet.

Sunrise Safari Breakfast: My bad. We ate at Pizzafari. We enjoyed it a lot even if I forgot where we ate!

Valet Parking Tips: Well, we went to the Grand Floridian twice, and the parking supervisor told me to tell the attendant at GF that we were guests at AKL and were using the valet service there. We should have paid for the parking, but because we stretched the truth a little bit with encouragement, we were comped at the GF. We did the same thing when we had dinner at Artist Point on our date night, but I guess we technically are entitled to free valet parking at WL. But there was some debate back a few weeks ago about changes in that policy when parking at resorts where we are not staying, but we had no problems.

Aquatica: It is not in SeaWorld but rather is across the street from SeaWorld. We have Platinum passes for SeaWorld so I did not pay much attention to the individual tickets, but I do think that SeaWorld sells a ticket that includes Aquatica. It is a separate admission and well worth it. The cabanas are a perfect shady spot. They have a roof and sides (which normally are tied back). Park rules do not allow all four sides to be closed (I guess no hanky panky allowed), but the back and the two sides can be closed. There are two wave pools, a lazy river, a rapid river and tons of slides and tubes.

Miscellaneous: The quick serve restaurant is the Mara, and they do serve some of the Boma soups. Pretty good selection. I know that people were in a total lather last week about chicken fingers/chicken nuggets. Fried chicken nuggets were in abundance throughout the parks and hotels, but not chicken fingers. The childrens' sides now default to healthy items, but fries and soda remain available on request. We were very happy not to have the fries come automatically.

Room Numbers: We had 6205 and 6206. 6205 is the 1-bedromm (HA) and 6206 is the studio. It is a nice sized studio unit.

Thanks for the great report. Sounds like a wonderful trip. I'd love to snag a night or two concierge at some point so we could do the sunrise safari, but I know chances are very slim since we don't own at AKV. And the SeaWorld water park sounds nice!

Thanks for the report. We are staying concierge in a studio in July.
