We met my MIL half way in Youngstown Ohio this weekend. Stayed at the Holiday Inn Boardman-thanks to Shutterbugs advice and it was great!! The kids loved the pool and the restaurant in the hotel was great and reasonable.

We took a drive to New Wilmington, PA and Volant, PA on Saturday. It was nice. It was Amish country and the kids really liked it.

We had great weather, although it was pretty gloomy on Saturday...but it didn't rain.

When we got there on Friday you could see the mountains in the distance from our room window. I wish I would have taken a picture then cause it was too foggy in the distance the next 2 days and we couldn't see them....oh well, next time.

Just thought I would share......and thanks again Shutterbug!!!

Sounds like you had a wonderful trip.

I went to college in New Wilmington..at Westminster...it certainly is a beautiful area...did you go to the Cheese House for some fresh amish cheese? Or maybe the amish cider mill..you bring a container and they fill it up right at the mill... Lots of great memories..thanks.

we went to the Cheese Haus (sp?)......didn't get any cheese though....but a bunch of nick-nacks. It was a really cool shop. I wish I would have bought more. You know when you want to wait and see what is in the next store etc....then you are mad that you didn't get more at the first store cause it was better.....

We just shopped alot in the little stores in New Wilmington and Volant. We bought one of those cedar lighthouses that lights up to put in our front yard. We live in a water-boating community...and DH has always wanted one. Other than that, just a bunch of little things.

It is a beautiful area though.....I kinda can't wait to go back!

We lived there for 4 years, just a couple of blocks or so from Handel's Ice Cream. Mmmmmm........ chocolate pecan! Is it still there? I also remember Gorants candy and our church in Boardman.

Glad you had a good time...... thanks for bringing back some memories!

Claudia - so glad you mentioned Handel's ice cream! I'm originally from Youngstown and have lots of family there, so I get back often! And boy, if I don't get a Handel's fix, I come home cranky! Now, there's a Handel's in Toledo, Columbus, and several other areas in Ohio, so when I shop in Toledo, or visit my sister in Cols., I have to stop, especially in the winter as the peppermint stick is my favorite! Yummy!
Also, if you like craft shows, Shaker Woods by Columbiana is the best one to go to IMO. It was the past two weekends, and many of the crafters only do this show.

Should you get back to New Wilmington, try The Tavern on the Green restaurant. Very good.
