The whole “process” is based on identifying areas where the disability causes or contributes to situations, which are problematic and providing skills and environmental modifications to prevent future problems. First you have to understand that using standard behavioral techniques are ineffective at best and damaging at worst.
Discipline only has an effect for the immediate situation, providing the skills and adaptations provide that child the ability to generalize these to future situations.
This system is developed from works and experience of highly respected clinicians. Just because it is not as easy or provide instant gratification does not mean that it is not the best for many children. Every significant event is analyzed and a principle based approach applied, so the child may “own” their responsibility in it and understand the need for the attainment of missing skills and the logic and importance of the same.
