Baby's First Christmas

How much did all of you buy for your baby's first Christmas? DD will only be 9 months at Christmas but I still want "Santa" to bring her lots of presents. She may not know the difference but I will and I also figure that when she is older we can show her the pictures of her first Christmas and what Santa brought. I was just curious to know what the rest of you have done.

I was broke at the time (16 years ago) and still went completely overboard. It's hard not to with your first I guess. Of course, what would I know I only have one.

Our daughter will also be 9 months old this Christmas, and my husband and I plan on having lots of presents for her too.

We put a limit on our spending though by saying he has $50 to spend and I have $50 to spend. That way we can surprise each other with her gifts, since she won't remember this holiday.

We also took her to Disney World at six months and we took about 500 pictures that she can look at someday!

What presents have you bought for your DD?

DS will be nearly nine months by the time Christmas comes. I'm going to not go overboard..just make him an Advent calendar and buy a few stocking stuffers. I fully expect DMIL (who is nuts for DS and DNephew LittleBitty)to go overboard though.

Okay, I am feeling a bit guilty now, looking back on our first child's first Christmas (he was 11 months old). We started seeing the gifts for DS streaming in from his eager new grandparents, and since we didn't have much extra cash at the time, we just got DS one small gift (a busy box or something) and left it at that! He still had more new toys than a baby could possibly need.

That year we also started a family tradition of choosing a child our own child's age off an Angel Tree and buying gifts for that child too--lots of fun, especially when your kids get old enough to participate!

If you want baby to have lots of presents but a lot of toys isn't practical you could always do half clothes & half toys.

Don't feel bad. That sounds like DH and I on our oldest's First Christmas. We were about broke and my mom did go nuts, as predicted. Of course, our baby was just 10 days old too. All I remember about Christmas that year was being sleep-deprived as I never had been before in my life.

Our dd was 12 months old her first christmas (born just a few days after christmas). We didn't spend a fortune on her but we didn't buy just one or two gifts either. I think we had 5-7 toys for her and some clothes. Our parents both bought her several things also. If I remember correctly my MIL and FIL bought her a bunch of clothes and my parents bought some toys. My inlaws might have bought some toys too but it's the clothes I remember, they bought the cutest stuff and I was so thankful for all of them. I can still remember what a couple of those outfits looked like, lol.

Don't feel guilty or bad - I did the same thing for my first 2 dd's when we were very limited financially. I just got them a Christmas doll which they still have and my MIL got them their Baby's First Christmas ornaments which we still have and place on the Christmas tree every year... and though we are better off now that was what we got our other kids, too.

I think sentimental stuff is great. Besides, you can spoil them as they get older anyway and start new traditions.

I went completely overboard with both of my children, and like every other child on his/her first Christmas, both just loved the boxes the stuff came in.

We went totally overboard with DD on her first Christmas too. This year she'll be almost 3 at Christmas and our DS will be almost 10 months. We went overboard (again) for both of them, but we did get more stuff for DD than we did for DS because he won't know the difference. Last year I got totally stupid about Christmas for DD, and I won't make that mistake again, she didn't want to open anymore presents after the first 10. Anyway, for DD, I put all the Dora Talking House stuff in one big rubbermaid bin and even though it's most of her presents, it will be only one box to open. I also got her a few other Dora things and some wood play food. I know my mom went crazy for DD so I am absolutely not buying her anymore presents, LOL. For DS, I got him three different Little People play sets, but I put it all in one rubber maid bin so he just has one present to open from us. I got him some wood blocks that make a train and that will go in his stocking.
