How much do you pay for baby sitters these days?

I'm talking about for the occasional evening out with DH not for a full time sitter for working parent.

I love having family watch them, but it seems I'm always relying on my Mom and she is not getting any younger. Other family member seems to have so many outside activites that keep them busy.

We hire the 14 year old girl neighbor who has known our kids for over 7 years and used to play with them. My kids are 7 & 11 and we pay $5/hour.

I babysat regularly for my neighbor for the two years before I left for college (started college last fall) and have been back a couple times since. They pay me roughly $5 an hour. I say roughly, because they're pretty generous in rounding up. They also have a tendency to compensate when they're a lot later than they expected. That's babysitting for one child. He was 16 months when I started babysitting him
There was another neighborhood family that I babysat for for a very brief time last summer. They had 4 kids, aged 16 months, 3 years, 5 years, and 8 years. My sister and I got $7 an hour to split between the two of us, since most of the time we were there as a duo. We called that crew the fearless 4; even 2 of us was not enough
3 years ago I babysat once a week from 8-5 for 2 boys, ages 8 and 10 I believe. I got $35 a day for that one

So basically it varies. Most of my friends make between $5 and $10 an hour though

Two kids at $ 10.00/hr.

Here's the rule I was told:
$5 for first kid and $2 for every kid after that. Then, round up.

So, basically for my 3 kids it's $9. 3 Hours would be $27, rounded to $30.

For just my 2.5yo we pay $15/hour.

It's really a regional thing, so your best bet would be to ask friends and neighbors what they pay sitters or ask sitters what they charge.

My teenagers get about $10/hour for most of their babysitting jobs. They mainly babysit for the next door neighbors and there are two kids, 5 and 8yo.

Geez, I'll come babysit Madison for that! :rotfl2:

This is why I never get out :rotfl: We usually paid 5 an hour with our 3 kids and since we've had # 4 we don't get out much. We have close family that will watch them for free though.

And that is why the only time I've ever had a babysitter for her was the 3 weeks after Henry was born. I had to take him to the dr pretty much everyday for weight checks and blood draws and didn't want to drag her along everytime. Never actually paid a sitter for any "leisure" time. And we ended up paying her a bit extra for travel time cause she lives in Silver Spring (Wheaton really) and had to take 2 buses to our house. (She was Madison's favorite camp counselor, we didn't really seek out someone so far!) So whenever you're up for it T&B, just let me know! ;)

for 15 bucks, i wish you were closer to me :)

Sheesh ... I feel so cheap.

It's been a while since I've needed a real one (my DS12 is Red Cross certified to sit, and he and my DD7 get along better than brothers/sisters should). I paid a minimum of $10, but then $5-7 hour after that.

My DS12 now gets $5/hour or $25/full work day (up to 8 hours) for days off from school (I never thought it was right that my parents made me stay home and watch my brother for free, so we do pay him for it).

My 15 Dd gets $12-$15 an hour for a family of 3 kids.
they also have an 11 yo boy, but he's usually not home.

DS14 gets about $5/hour for two preschool/elementary aged kids, which in our area is pretty good. Justthat, most people don't get paid $15/hour for their regular jobs around here. I can't imagine paying a teenager that kind of money to babysit (although it sounds like your's is older).

The thing that worries me about these kids getting paid so well babysitting is that when they are out of school and reality hits that they are going to make the same or less then they did babysitting the neighborhood kids.

Wow some places pay a lot more than I would have guessed. 15$ hour is more than I was making when I worked. I usually pay 5 dollars for two kids and always round it off and would never pay less than 10 even if I was only gone an hour. I check with the kids around here. I know my neice makes quite a bit, but she lives in a neighbor hood where the cheaper house are 3/4 million.
