Baby shower alternative ideas

I have a dear friend who is expecting her first baby at 39. She went through in vitro at least twice to no avail and gave up trying several years ago when married to her first husband. She got remarried this summer much to her surprise became pregnant. Anyway, she's having a traditional shower, but I was thinking about just a few of us who have been friends with her since high school giving her a small shower as well. I'd like to do something different, like maybe one just for her instead of traditional baby gifts. Does anybody have any experience with these types of showers? I don't want to do any new agey stuff like making a cast of her belly or anything, but I'm open to other ideas. Thanks.

I did an "extra" shower for my cousin. It was about the MOM. Gifts for her were welcome- stuff like hair salon gift certificates, my mom gave her a maid for 2 months, restaurant gift certificates. And I asked everyone to bring a freezer friendly meal. So she left with some nice gifts for herself (that she loved and said helped her during the tough days- and great meals for the first couple weeks so she didn't have to worry about cooking)

Also how about a mom pampering - the spa idea I like, how about a pedicure - those toes will look spectacular during labor!

Love, love, love the Mom shower idea, how nice Everyone bringing a frozen meal is a fantastic thought! Sure wish my freezer was stocked by others when I got home from the hospital

I would just do a nice lunch and give her some pamper gifts for herself.
