Baby Formula Question

My son Quinn is 3 months old and I've tried 2 different formulas with him. One is a major brand name and one is store brand. They both have ARA/DHA stuff and the store brand says it's compared to the major brand.

OK, so the difference b/t the two is one doesn't mix up very well. I shake it a lot and some still settles at the bottom. The other one forms a lot of bubbles as he's drinking it. He seems to prefer them both the same. So, my question is which is worse, the clumps or the bubbles? Any thoughts?

My DS was on powder Similac Advanced with Iron. I found that it bubbled when we shook it to mix it up, but it never bothered DS. He drank it fine and never really had a problem with gas from the bubbles.

I think only your baby can let you know which is best for him...babies tolerate different things so differently, it's very hard to compare.

Congrats on the birth of your son! Love the name, Quinn. :)

I would think the clumps would be worse. Some of the vitamins and nutrients may not be ingested if the clumps won't fit through the nipple. I would call and ask the nurse at your pediatric clinic, or maybe the pharmacist to be sure.

I didn't give my daughters formula until they were older than 6 months and on solid foods, so I don't know about a child that young.

However, if he does not seem to have more gas with one than another, then I don't think it makes a difference. Plus, your son is getting closer to an age when you are going to start solids. I would be less concerned about texure (clumps) as your son nears the 4-6 month mark.

When we did give formula to our girls, we were not brand specific. We used the free stuff that came to the house and was given in the hospital. With our second we did end up buying the Costco brand.

We bottle fed both of our children and we put one small DROP of Mylicon in every bottle we made.(we used powder as well) That totally disapated (sp) all of the bubbles when the bottle was shaken. Worked like a charm. We started using the store brand Mylicon drops with our second and they worked just as well.

Good luck and HTH,

Pam

When we had to go to formula, I used both the name brand and store brand, and found the same thing! DS didn't care which one we used so I got name brand if I had a coupon (or when we needed the single serving packs for traveling) and store brand if I didn't. Pediatrician said nutritionally, they're all the same if you're buying like-kind...

For the bubbles, they never seemed to bother DS so I just fed right after shaking.

For the clumps, I just shook a little extra to make sure they were getting broken up. It did take a bit more shaking, but they would eventually go down. Or, you could always whisk it in another container before putting it in the bottle. :)

We did the very same thing. One drop and all the bubbles were gone.

Mylicon was a lifesaver here, too; however we did find that the store brand did not work as well as the name brand.

In regards to the powder not mixing well, are you putting the powder in after you have filled the bottle with water? I find at the MDO program that I work at, that if mom puts the powder in for us to add water to the formula clumps up quite often. Just a thought.
