Baby carriers that aren't bad for babies' backs

I see a lot of people mentioning Baby Bjorns and Snugglis here so I thought I would post a few carriers that I know of that aren't bad for babies spines like the above mentioned are. Bjorn type carriers are very bad for a baby because the baby basically hangs from his crotch, putting a lot of pressure on the spine and not properly alligning the hips. Not an attack on anyone that uses one, as I used to use one before I researched them.

Here's an article about spinal stress in infants.

I really like the ergo baby carrier. I don't have it, but it looks really cool and everyone I know that has one raves about it. You can use it through toddlerhood. We are definitely getting one before our next trip.

I've used the sutemi, but the straps were a little wide for me.

Any type of sling is fine for a baby's hips. My ring sling has too high of a learning curve for me, but DH uses it all the time. Mei tai's look awesome, but I've never used one.

I'm sure that others can add their reviews of their ergonomically correct carriers. If you are a Snuggli/Bjorn user, you might find that you can get a higher quality carrier for less money using one of the above listed carriers.

I have the "Walking Rock Farms "Hip Baby" and LOVE it. We will be using it next week!!

Maybe I missed it in the article that you linked to, but why are the Ergo and Sutemi carriers okay while a Bjorn isn't?

I bought my toddler baby carrier at a store (Happy Bambino in Madison, WI) with an extensive selection of slings and carriers (in fact, the store doesn't even sell strollers because they are all about baby wearing). It was explained to me that there are two different baby carrier styles: slings type carriers and Bjorn style carriers. The Sutemi and Ergo are both considered Bjorn sytle carriers.

Is the Sutemi and Ergo okay because they are a little wider at the bottom than a Bjorn?

If anyone is looking for a suggestion for a really comfy sling, we have one from KangarooKorner that is just so comfortable and cozy! (the adjustable fleece pouch) My 13 month old loves it :)

from even reading the ergo carrier's website they claim to better for the parents back, not the babies.

They are ok because the baby is actually sitting in the carrier. They are *much* wider than a bjorn. In a bjorn, a baby isn't sitting, he's hanging. A baby can't forward face in a sutemi or an ergo. They also properly align their legs so that they are at the right angle for their hips.

The store may have only had two categories of carriers, but that doesn't put an ergo and a sutemi in the same category as a bjorn at all. The store probably grouped them together because they both have straps that the parent wears.

Like I said, I used to use a bjorn when ds was a baby (he hated it, so I always had to take him out right away), but then someone told me about the spine issues so I did some research on my own. I was happy to have found that info, so I thought others might be as well. But don't take my word for it, google for yourself and see.

I love that site! I've never tried a pouch, are they easy?

From the ergo site:
The ERGO Baby Carrier's ergonomic design supports a correct sitting position for the baby's hip, pelvis and spine growth. It disperses most of the baby's weight between the hips and thighs, which helps to eliminate compression of the spine when hanging by the crotch which most other designs require. The ERGO also balances the baby's weight to parents' hips and shoulders, and alleviates physical stress for the parent. At infancy, The ERGO with the Infant Insert, supports your newborn like a baby sling while having both hands free to work. It can be worn on the front, back or hip position (shown on right).

The Ergo IS good for baby's spine, and good for your's too...really comfortable to wear. BUT—good luck getting the baby into it if you're alone. We sold ours because it was such a pain to get baby into and out of. Just my 2 cents.

We also have a Hotslings sling, and LOVE it.

Lol! I have a hard time getting baby into the maya wrap without help! :rotfl: That's another reason why I make dh go with me whenever I need to have the babies with me.

I have 3 carriers. A snugli which I like but it is only good for a small time span as my kids are big, an ultimate baby wrap which feels like I am being slowly squeezed to death, and a ring sling which I LOVE!!!! I have 3 kids - 3, 23 months and 2 months so I have a bit of experience with these products. The sling took a bit to get used to but now I couldn't live without it and my ds loves it. It is easy to use and can be used for a long time. I got a brand new one on ebay for 11.50 USC including shipping. I wish I had it for my other 2 kids. They have been using them in Europe for years. If Babies R Us sold them they would make a killing! I hope this helps. :earboy2:

I use an angelpack carrier for my 3 month old. It is so comfy! I can wear it around for hours and nothing hurts! The baby loves it too, and they are really pretty. Here's the link- www.attachedtot.com

I am hoping she can still fit in it when we go to Disney when she is a year old!

Those are really pretty. I really want a mei tai style carrier, but they look so hard to tie. I love the prints they come in though!

LOVE my hotsling too. i bought it when dd was 4 months and at 15 months i can still use it, i'll be bringing it on our trip again in 3 weeks! i find it is essential for waiting in long queue's with a baby who can't walk. (dd can walk now but doesn't mind the sling on occasion).
