we will be adding a new niece to the family in May and I am trying to put together a box to ship to NM (we live in VA) and was looking for budget friendly ideas...

its his second (my brother in law) but her first... we have a 9 month old so i'm trying to add useful things and not all the junk you think you need.. but running out of ideas.. i think they are planning on breastfeeding and using cloth diapers (i nurse, but used disposable).. I was planning on adding diapers and wipes, but thats out since they are using cloth... most of the stuff (not a lot) on the registry is way out of our price range or i refuse to buy, b/c i know they won't ever use it!

so far we have:

Cloud B Twilight Ladybug (my son's favorite thing is his turtle!) - used my swagbucks amazon gift cards
Nursing Cover - free from uddercovers!
Homemade (embroidered with her initials) burp cloth and pacifier clip

it doesn't have to be free or completely cheap, but i am trying to be budget minded and useful!

Any help would be great!
TIA!!

How about a swaddling blaket? One of my favorite and useful gifts (not too costly either).

Another thought is a nursing pillow.

Too bad you can't box up some sleep for a new mother!

Baby tylenol, benadryl, diaper rash cream, baby wash and lotion.

Gas drops might be nice. I always forgot to buy those until I had a fussy baby. Although I did not have to use them much with the two that I nursed. How about a nice photo frame or album?

Burt's Baby Bees stuff (baby wash, etc), Charlie's soap (generally the most recommended laundry detergent for cloth diapers).. maybe some washable nursing pads? I know Medela makes some of those. They are about $7 for a 6-pack. A boppy pillow/cover makes a great gift, too. If they are using cloth diapers, they might like a wet bag (either full-size or travel-size).
I think putting together a basket sounds like a great idea- how thoughtful!

I definitely did not get enough burp cloths, and I had a spitter so they were essential!

I think there are cloth breastpads. I think that'll be extremely useful and she'll probably need several sets of those.

I agree with the burp cloths, but we use receiving blankets as burp clothes and they do double duty.

Alos the swaddling blanket is a great idea. I love anais and aden brand from Target. They are so light and airy and HUGE! It'll grow with the baby and won't keep the baby too warm if he/she is born during summer time.

A bottle of fragrance free bath soap and lotion, these are a bit expensive but definitely useful.

Have fun deciding!

I used to give a gift of mylecon, baby tylenol, benedryl, diaper rash cream - those things you need and don't have. I don't do lotion or wash, because most of my kids had ezcema, and couldn't use any of that.

I enjoyed getting items for when the baby was a bit older, small feeding spoons, baby bowls, sippy cups etc. I got tons of things that were for newborns and then as dd got older we were spending a fortune. Most people buy for right away, so those that bought ahead were really appreciated.

Just curious, what do you give your kids for eczema? Anything helps?
Mine doesn't have it but have pretty dry skin. I'm hoping it won't grow into a full blown eczema, so every night I go over her whole body with Aveeno fragrance free baby lotion. So far it's working really well.

I have a 4 month old and totally agree with burp cloths. Also, the idea of gas drops, tylenol, etc.is great! How about some hand sanitizer that connects on to the diaper bag? I get some at Bath and Body. I also agree that some items for when the baby starts eating food is a great idea (and affordable!). There are some many fun snack containers out there too!

how about a neat water bottle for the mama? always thirsty when b/f!!!

Maybe one of those snap open snack containers. My baby is in High school, but still takes a baggie of cheerio's in the morning.....

After having a baby with dry sensitive skin who had lots of issues with dermatitis and stuff as a baby I stay away from lotions and scented things. Even the Johnson's baby bath has scents!

My standard baby gift is an outfit that has snaps so Daddy doesn't have to struggle to get anything over the babys head. We had lots of onesies that didn't get much use at the young age because of that.

Also a set of the three Carters bibs that snap! I hated the ones with velcro they stuck to everything the dryer and also ruined a couple of my things by snagging them.

A book is another good thing to put in.

Cerave cream is awesome!!! It's the only thing that cleared up my ds' eczema and I tried every OTC lotion/cream out there. Make sure you buy the tub version (not the lotion in a bottle). It works best and will last forever....

We use Cetaphil in the jar for my daughter. Her really bad spots we used 1% hydrocortizone ointment (not the creamy stuff). Also had to use it on her binky rash she ALWAYS had on her cheeks.

We were told lots of different lotions to try. The Eucrince, Aquaphor, etc. The Cetaphil was what worked. Still use it on her after bathtime and she's almost 2.

Pacfiers, baby lotions/cream, and a nice blanket. You could even add larger sized onesies for 3-6 mos or 9-12 mos. And socks-babies never have enough socks. You can find cute character themed ones at Target's Dollar Spot.

Baby Depot (inside Burlington Coat Factory usually) has a big $1 section. Some of the stuff is complete junk, but I did find some useful things there.

10 packs of baby clothes hangers are about a dollar at WalMart.

Oh, I can help! When they were little, it was severe (bleeding), so we had to go with strong prescriptions. Now, it's not as bad, and my pediatrician gave me a sample of Triple Paste eczema/dry skin cream (the same company as Triple Paste diaper rash cream) - totally worked wonders! It was new, and not in our drugstores, so I just ordered in online. Dd7 keeps some at school, too. It nice because it gets absorbed by the skin, and isn't greasy.
