Baby #19 for the Duggars born!

I hope that the baby is alright. But, I really believe that they should stop at this point. People may say that they are doing everything right -- but, their life is a reality show -- and what is right about that. A child born with major disabilities will have to be somebody's responsibility for the rest of their lives. We have a good friend that actually had to make one of her daughter's a ward of the state because the Mom was getting too old to take care of her financially any longer. So here is a child with disabilities that no longer lives with any family member. It is sad and I think people should think about what the future will realistically be.
But the good thing about their family is that there are 18 other siblings to care for her when jim bob and michelle get too old, ect if she has major disabilities.

they will rally together to care for her. i'm not worried.

I would be surprised if the baby had lasting serious complications from being born this early.
As I said my DD was born a little over 1 pound, 13 years ago and she has no complications. They have even made major advances since then. I think the clue will be if the baby was deprived of oxygen during the labor or delivery.

Michelle Duggar is 43. 5 of her children have been born via C-section, including the last 2.

agnes!

This might be her realty check..especially if the child has difficulties..

I hope so...but I doubt it. I think they are a nice family, but I think that having that many children can not be healthy for your body.

I know she loves her children, but I really think she thrives on the attention she gets from being pregnant.

Exactly, my sister was born weighing 1 pound 12 ounces 35 years ago and she is perfectly fine now.

But MOST babies born at 25 weeks do have some lifelong complications (my aunt is a NICU nurse, so I'm not making this up). The complication could be something fairly mild, like a hearing or vision loss. But many babies born this early have cerebral palsy from brain bleeds or strokes, or permanent brain damage (even if the damage is minor).

Only a small percentage (less than 25%) have no complications. I really hope this little girl has no complications, but the odds aren't in her favor.

Do the Duggars have health insurance? I thought Jim Bob said something about it - but I can't remember. I also think he said the only time they go in debt is when they have medical bills. I'm not sure - maybe I'm confused. :confused3

Even if you don't believe in using birth control there are ways to naturally prevent pregnancy like charting your cycle.

I really hope that they stop having kids now. It is just too risky. I am hoping that the new baby pulls through OK - how scary for the whole family.

My grandmother was 1 1/4 lbs when she was born and she lived for 83 year (passed away this August). I don't know if she was premature though.

Agnes! - I'm not sure if your statement was accurate. I was just watching an "ask the Duggars" special on On Demand and I am pretty sure that Jennifer (#17) was born naturally. The twin Jana and John David (#2 and #3) were c-section and Jordyn (#18) was c-section. Michelle talked about the reason that she chose her doctor was that she was willing to attempt VBAC with her every time as long as they were able to have the necessary hospital staff ready to perform the c-section if necessary.

It makes me happy to hear the stories of tiny babies growing up with little or no problems.

Poor little baby. Poor family, they must be worried sick.

This article says she was born at 25 weeks. I do know that most babies born this early often have lifelong problems. Some don't though.

Josie Brooklyn was born at 25 weeks and, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in June, babies born at 25 weeks who receive aggressive treatment through intensive care have an 82 percent chance of survival.

You're right, I mis-read the chart at the Wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/18_Kids_and_Counting

But, according to that article + your info, five Duggar children have been born by C-section: Jana and John-David (the twins), Jackson, Jordyn and Josie, the last two babies have had c-section births. I'll correct the information in my original post.

I wish baby Josie and Michelle and Jim Bob health and happiness. In the past I was very much against the Duggars and their lifestyle and have come to truly appreciate them as a family.

However, I'm really tired of the excuse that this is what God wants for them. If this is truly what God wants for you, stop having sex. If you still get pregnant, than I'm right there with you. God has an entire world to worry about, I really don't think the Duggars and their maritial relationship habits are the center of his universe.

I'm happy to hear such good stories of tiny babies growing up healthy too because I know of a baby in my BIL's family who was born at 26 weeks and she is and always will be developmentally behind due to her early birth. There are tiny babies and then there are young babies. The younger the baby, the more chance for complications. The longer the baby stays inside mom, the more of a chance the body & organs have to develop and allow the baby to become a healthy child.

According to TMZ, their baby girl was born via emergency c-section, weighing under 2 pounds.

My question is, is this her first c-section? Will she have to slow the baby-making down now?

I actually think the Duggars are a wonderful family, but at some point, after so many babies, why am I not suprised to hear that Michelle's uterus will no longer hold a baby to term?

I have one child, who happened to be born at 26 weeks gestation, weighing exactly 2 lbs (dropping to a low weight of 1 lb 10 oz). Babies as young as mine, and now the Duggars, are prone to many, many preemie problems. This little one likely has lung problems. My child came home, after 3 months in intensive care, on oxygen and an apnea monitor, and we were warned about doing are darndest to keep him from not getting even a cold. That Duggar house has got to be a germ bed with all those little ones around. :scared1:I can't imagine eventually bringing a vulnerable preemie home into that household where babies are passed around to siblings like toys.

Poor little baby! I hope she makes it.

She has had c-sections before.

And thier baby making isn't something to be "slowed down" or "sped up"-- or judged. They will continue to live their life and their marital relationship as they wish. They don't believe in birth control and what happens, happens. Just because our American society today doesn't follow with their religious beliefs is no reason to judge them.

Whether or not the baby has any handicaps won't matter to their family. They will love her and support her no matter what.
.

Sending prayers and positive thoughts to the Duggar family and to their new addition.

Have they named her?

Some of the news articles are citing that Josie Brooklyn was actually born at 1 pound 6 oz. which is scary. At that premature, every ounce counts.

Prayers for their baby girl. I think they are such a wonderful family-they seem to have done such a great job raising those kids. Yes, it's unique way to raise kids in this day and age but I think they really know what they are doing.

Prayers going out to the Duggar family and their new baby girl..

I had a 1 pound baby and I know others look at it different but it is absolutely heartbreaking to see your baby in the NICU and struggling. It is cruel and selfish to keep this up when her chances of something going wrong climb.

Go ahead and flame away and post what a great mom she is. I will respectfully disagree.

You will not get any flames from me. The babies are in pain when they are treated at that age and that size. My sister is an RT in a NICU and PICU in a children's hospital and she tells me how difficult this is for these poor little babies. They have no choice but their parents could take precautions to prevent more pregnancies that could be dangerous to the babies.

To some, this is a form of birth control. There are also some who look at abstaining from sex, in a marital relastionship, as a form of birth control. Neither of these are what the Duggers believe.

What gets me is that the poster who had the NICU child doesn't have 19 kids.

So it seems we should all be clairvoyant to know the circumstances of how our child will be born and then avoid it at all costs if NICU would be needed.

That makes no sense to me and leaves me pondering as to the judgement I might receive if my baby suffer the same fate.

Some people hit the "NICU lotto" on their first pregnancy--so are we suggesting that them having considered children at all was foolish?:confused3

I'm almost disgusted at the inference considering that the large majority of nicu babies do not have 18 older brothers and sisters.
