babies on cruises

Hi There!
We went on a cruise with a bunch of people. The two youngest were 20 months and 16 months. There were changing tables in the wheelchair accessible unisex single bathrooms. Probably a good idea because it gives more room. At meal times the bathrooms get kind of full. We brought some small sand toys to the fountain pool with us. Shovels, sand wheels, watering cans, We carried these from home to take to the beaches on the islands. Really came in handy. It was hard though to take them away when we were ready to leave. I might have missed this but what cruise are you going on. If St. Maarten, we have a great beach to go to. I will keep checking and see what your reply is. The diaper genies were added plusses and we just left the pack and play open all the time.
Have fun.
Lisa

Does DCL provide the diaper genies or did you bring your own? When did you request it? Also, I was thinking of ordering a basket from Shirley at Perfect Gift for my then 18 month-old nepehew. I will have her include water toys (buckets, shovels, etc) That way I don't have to shlep them on a plane from NY and my nephew will have something to play with.

Boy oh boy I can't wait.

DCL provides them..I requested one when we booked but it wasn't there so I just told the room attendant and he brought one right away!

Depending, of course, on just for whom the "more room" was originally intended.....If I have an "accident" while waiting for a mom to change a diaper in a handicapped accessible designated bathroom does that mean she is responsible for the inconvenience and mess she has caused ME?
From my point of view it is not a good idea at all for a parent to put the comfort of an infant above that of an adult and as soon as the ADA is applied to the topic of why changing tables have been allowed to eat into the space intended for the wheelchairs, electric scooters, and service dogs that accompany the handicapped the sooner I can ease up on harassing those who insist on hogging the only public bathroom space that I can get into with my electric scooter and service dog....

Yes. Disney provides the pack and play. Your stateroom steward will open the pack and play nightly if you just choose for your baby to sleep in there.

No rudeness intended--please no flames...

--but in Florida that is in the case of lots of places--the changing table is in the handicapped stall--restaurants, grocery stores, et cetera.

And what would the difference be for you to have to wait for a mother to change her child or if another disabled consumer had to use the facility. ADA from my understanding does not give you the right to cut ahead of anyone requiring the facility for a legitimate reason and it isn't fair to judge others necessity for those facilities.

If it was non-ADA compliant it would not be allowed on US soil--not sure on the ship. [Granted I have not been on the ship yet (a dream!!!!) so I do not know what it physically looks like in those restrooms]

Sorry to be on my ADA bandwagon--I got booked on my honeymoon cruise on Carnival and was placed in an ADA cabin--I was peeeeeeved!!! Didn't require the extra space and heck--didn't ask for it--to me that would be worse than a mom changing her kids diaper in a bathroom equipped for that--ADA compliant or otherwise. At least she'd be out in a jiffy....can you imagine someone who tried to book that cruise but all the ADA room were taken. Now that is wrong!

Owenbyd,

Thanks so much for the info. My dh will be happy he does't have to carry it on the plane. Do you have any infants going on your next dcl?

I would think that the reason that the diaper changing stations are in the wheelchair accessible bathrooms is because individuals in wheelchairs have infants who have diapers that need changing.

If they weren't there, than there may be an ADA issue with not providing diaper changing stations to those in wheelchairs.

:scratchin ... ::yes::

When I read that, my first thought was that handicapped stalls have changing tables because disabled people are allowed to have children who need to be changed, just like able bodied people do. My second thought was that:

was a rather selfish statement. When I'm on the Disney Wonder in June, I feel that my then 16 week old daughter is just as entitled to comfort as anyone else on the ship. How you can say that you are more important than in infant is beyond me. There are only so many changing table available for them, just like there are only so many handicapped restrooms available, so if there is a free changing table I will use it. And I'm sure I will not take any longer changing my daughter than any disabled person using the restroom would.

kudos to you for saying that...and when you think about it an infant is somewhat disabled--needs diaper changed, has to be fed by someone other than self--cannot walk.

ADA does not provide for special treatment--it provides for more equitable treatment by having public places accessible--and if it is the only restroom available--I use it myself, infant or not.

Thanks for the congrats about my daughter Lisa loves Pooh! And thanks for all of your great tips and advice about babies in the heat. My Louisianan fiancé thinks I'm crazy for worrying about it so much, but I remember how hot I was in WDW in May 1999 and every summer when we visit his family in New Orleans, so I want to be sure Madison isn't sweltering all day. And even before I had her, I always felt that kids deserve the same rights adults get - after all they count on us to take care of them and they can't always tell us when they're uncomfortable.
