BA seat allocation

Hi.

We're looking at booking flights to LAX next winter. Excellent prices and flight times with British Airways but I noticed seat allocation is £25 pp each way! Or free if you leave it until 24hours prior to flight whilst doing online check-in.

I'm not sure about leaving it until then and running the risk of the four of us sitting separately on a 12 hour flight.

Just wondering if anyone had any past experience or advice on the issue.

Not flown with BA for years so can't give much advise. Its something I would never pay for. Done 29 transatlantic trips always got sat together except 1 flight on Xmas day with VA, online checkin was down so went to airport Xmas morning 2+ hours before flight they had given our reserved seats away. Ended up sitting 2+2 about 10 rows apart. I still won't pay for it.

I haven't bothered in the past as BA policy is that if any of your group are under 12 then they allocate seats together 5 days beforehand. We have always been seated together. DS is now 12 so next time we will have to think about what to do but probably go with what is allocated- £25pp each way soon adds up.

If you do have under 12s and don't like what you have been allocated at 5 days out, you could always opt to pay for different seats at that point.

Don't think they would deliberately split you up unless plane was super busy - just check-in asap.

Only once with BA way back in 1994 did we not get allocated seats together at check in. I started to cry as I am or was a very nervous flyer and they promptly found 2 together..so you always have the option of collapsing into floods of tears As wayne said I also would def not pay...if you do an on line check in the day before or get to the airport early I can't see there would be a problem..

Just check in 24 hrs before your flight and you should have plenty of seats to choose from. We are flying to LA in three weeks and, as I work for BA, we will be flying Standby - we only fly if there are unsold seats on the flight, so we could be seated anywhere on the aircraft.

We're flying BA this year (after my 10 year boycot of said airline ) and there is no way I am paying for seats. we will take what we get. It's just me and DD and if they split us up, she will make a big enough scene that for the sake of peace, I'm pretty confident that at least one passenger will offer to change places with one of us!

It's insane to charge to choose where you sit, unless you are going for an extra legroom seat

I decided to go ahead and book flights with BA. Plan to do on-line check in at exactly 24 hours prior to flight and hopefully get seats together.

BTW flights from Dublin to LAX via Heathrow were £385 return pp!
