I thought I would end up posting a cute story about How it all started with a mouse..but not Mickey....BUT..
Last week I opened the hood to check oil and to my (and her) surprise there was a mouse looking back at me. She had pulled insulation off the material on the hood on the inside (firewall?) and made a nest...apparently planning to homestead in my truck
Well I shooed her out of there and got rid of the nest (no babies or anything) and then discovered she had eaten right through a spark plug wire...she tore it up so bad there wasn't enough left so that I could use electrical tape for a temp fix..no other wires or any other damage seen..this is a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder 6 cyl and 4wd if that matters....
Anyway, today, I called everywhere to see if I could just buy one wire to remove & replace but no go. Have to buy whole set or have a mechanic fix it. My neighbor said it was "safe" to drive but that it would run like $$it and blow through alot of gas. It did start and I was on my way to get the wires replaced. I went about 8 miles it started to lose power and then died. Long story short, I need expert opinions here please. Neighbor picked me up we bought the kit of spark plug wires went back, replaced, no go, engine is not just "clicking" when you turn the key it sounds like it wants to turn over. Ended up having it towed home. Told the whole story to tower, he checked it on the side of the road and determined the coil in the distributor cap wasn't firing....my neighbor had thought that too.......so here is where I would like your expert opinion....and I know it would just be a guess but I'd like to prepare myself....do you think that having the coil changed will get me back up and running OR as my neighbor (who loves to go to worst case scenario immediately) states it might be more than the coil...probably messed up the computer too......of course the tow/mechanic won't know this until he gets it in his shop...so I guess I'm looking for educated guesses....could it have gone that far damage wise?? I didn't want to tow it to his place because quite frankly $$$$ is real bad right now & I don't have the $$ for the bill if it is more than a coil. What do you think??
