My girlfriend is taking her DD's 5 and 2 to WDW this fall. They are thinking of skipping Beauty and the Beast, because the girls are worried about the Beast. Has anyone with sensitive kids taken them to this show. Would you see it in anyway as being "scary?"

Also, has anyone found the Little Mermaid show to be "scary?" They are actually debating about not going to MGM at all because they are worried their girls will be scared.

I have never been to MGM, but am planning to be there in November and I can't wait! If anyone has advice for my girlfriend, please let me know. I would hate to see her miss out on two great shows!

Much thanks! ::MinnieMo

The Little Mermaid is in an inside theater .It has a few moments of real darkness ,lightening and icky Ursala that might scare them.

Beauty and the Beast is a big stage show in an ampitheater,I don't think it's bad.

One to absolutley avoid is It's Tough to be a Bug at AK.That scared my son to death when he was 5 ,he's now 11 and still doesn't like it! :earseek:

We took our dd last year when she was 2. B&B was no problem - it's an outside show so I figured if she got scared, we could leave easily. We had no problems. We had originally said we wouldn't see the Little Mermaid but we did and she loved it. Especially the beginning when it gets all misty. We sat through it twice. Only you know your child - if you think it will be a problem you may want to skip it. We did a lot more than what we thought we would with her. Good luck!

Tried to take my DD to see Little Mermaid when she was about 3 yrs old- she was so scared of Ursula, the eels and all the loud noises that she insisted we leave. Hasn't wanted to go back since.

I think it really depends on the child(ren). My sister, who is 5 1/2 now, has been going to Disney practically since birth. She was about 3 the first time we went to the Little Mermaid show and she LOVED it...still does. I (amazingly) have STILL not managed to go see Beauty and the Beast so I don't know from personal experience, but she's been seeing it for YEARS and loves that too.

There are rides that she goes on that have always scared her...but she still loves them. The beginning of Haunted Mansion she HAS to be held. Once you get into the seat, she's happy as a bug in a rug. Parts of Pirates scare her, but she insists on going to it. The alien part in The Great Movie Ride has Always scared her, but she loves the rest so she just buries her head into us during that time. Etc.

One thing we ALWAYS tell her on rides/shows that scare her is that they are NOT REAL. That it is pretend and that it's Meant to be "scary" but that it's a Fun scary and it can't hurt her. She's always understood that...so much so that we'd tell her WE were scared and she'd say, "Don't worry, it's scary, but it's FUN and can't hurt you." LOL!!

She has always refused to go on Splash Mountain (well, she was too short Forever and since we've gone and she's been tall enough she's refused) because of the fall. I Knew she'd love it though. So when we were there in Aug (dfh, mom, friend Kim, Nikki, and I) we basically guilt tripped her into it. We made her go through the line with us and then let her say no, leave, and wait for us in the gift shop. I took pictures in the ride and when we got out we showed them to her with mom saying how much SHE wanted to go on. Well, she changed her mind and said she'd try it (with us promising that if she didn't like it, she didn't have to go again). Well...she LOVED it. I mean, she would have ridden it 100 times in a row if she could have!! And then she begged us to take her on Big Thunder!! Lol!

DD sat through Little Mermaid with her eyes closed when she was 3 and is still a little afraid at 6 but insists on going as Ariel is her favourite princess
Beauty and the Beast wasn't a problem at all as you can choose to sit way back-making the Beast pretty tiny :goodvibes

I second the concern about TTBAB. Stupid me, I ignored the warnings when DS was about 5. At 12 he's only just done it again but still says he hates it. I think if I'd waited until he was older he may not have loved it but he wouldn't be afraid of it.

Great advise about sitting in the back for B&B. :)

When my oldest son was young, he was afraid of 1 part of B&B. The part when the town's people go to kill the beast. He's cower his head into one of us, til it was over. At Mermaid, he was so scared of Ursula. My youngest is opposite. He loved Mermaid. I have not taken him to B&B yet.

Here's another to avoid: Snow White in MK.

If the kids are mature enough to handle it, I will make this suggestion. Get them each a tiny little flashlight on a string they can wear around their necks. Instruct them that they can turn on this flashlight anytime they want to. The rules are that they cannot shine the light anywhere except in their laps or at their feet. Not at the attraction or at anyone else. As long as they do this they can remain in control of the lights.

I did this when my kids were very small and it really made a huge difference. The thing is that many, many rides at WDW are in the dark - even though they are not scary at all. Sensitive kids may be frightened before they have a chance to realize there is nothing to be worried about! :goodvibes My kids were the same age and I had no problems with them abusing the lights. Many times, those little lights came on but they always shined them down at their feet or lap. It gave them a feeling of control. After a few days, they didn't need them anymore!

B&TB shouldn't be a problem...They don't try to make it scary, and I think that comes across. (although the Broadway show is a bit frightening for the little ones). I don't recall VOTLM being scary, it doesn't get darker than a movie theatre in there - I believe there was a little thunder and lightning that would scare a child.

I agree with Snow White - you are actually following the witch, not Snow White, so it becomes quite frightening...
