I don't know if any of you have heard, but a member of the NAACP made a comment about our Azalea Trail Maids and how they shouldn't be allowed to attend the presidential inauguration because they represent a time of slavery! (They wear Antibellum dresses!) These girls are soooo happy and proud to be representing our state and it infuriates me to know that someone is trying to stir racial conflict in such a historic and memorable time. If you want to know the truth, the trail maids have a very rich, diverse group of young ladies from ALL cultures representing our area. Instead this person said we should have an all African American school's band go in their place! Why???? I am so insulted as an American that someone would be so insensitve and ignorant! Sorry to rant but It really hurts when something like this happens. I know first hand that the ATM's from this area are honored to be a part of this history making event!

I'm with ya. For some people diversity only works one way, I guess. :(

That's a shame. I hope they get to go. Those girls must feel awful that someone is trying to portray them as the equivalent of slave owners.

They are supposed to leave this Sunday. One of our city council members donated ten thousand dollars (of his own money) to help defray the cost of their trip. I just hope that the comments made do not affect the attitudes of others towards them. I mean I know the NAACP has helped many families overcome lots of unfair and unjustified problems over the years, but I think as a nation we have made such strides that these types of comments have become offensive and unnecessary. No one is trying to make light of slavery. These girls are Americans trying to represent their state in a positive light. Nothing more.

That is a matter of opinion. I happen to think they are pretty.:flower3:

I think they represent the theme of the group very nicely. I hope the girls get to go & be a part of everything.

That is totally insane and uncalled for IMO. I hope the girls get to go and have a fabulous time.

I am not a fan of the current dresses...they look kind of cheap... (of course since I have bought many dance costumes...I am sure they are far from inexpensive)

They make me think southern belle..... not slave owner.....

and as long as the group is inclusive.....they should march proudly!

Aren't they one and the same? I mean, Southern Belle makes me think "Scarlett O'Hara."

LOL

Most southern families were too poor to own slaves, but almost all the girls had at least one formal hoop dress and all of them had a lot of pride.

Learn something new everyday. Thanks.

I agree, those outfit are just awful.:scared:

Off to google NAACP and Azalea Trail Maids.:surfweb:

I googled them. At least in the photo's they are inclusive..Someone was being overly sensitive aIMO nd should have looked into them before commenting.

Scarlett O'Hara would not have been caught dead in those dresses though .:scared1:

Fiddley Dee!

I found this and a few others.

I have to admit that those dresses do make you think of a certain era. If they were wearing poodle skirts and ankle socks we'd also think of a certain era.

One person has an issue with them marching in the parade. No big deal, ignore him and he will go away.

I'm sure there are those that will complain about many of the groups marching. Heaven help the group that doesn't play the "right" music or doesn't dance/march "appropriately".:scared1:

So much for a change, Huh :confused3

The outfits are a bit hideous, but come on, get real. You're right Miss Scarlet wouldn't be caught dead in one of those dresses. She also got out in the fields and worked next to their slaves when Atlanta was burned.

You know those girls used to walk in the WDW Easter parade years ago.
