My aunt who lives in Tennessee told me about a news report she had heard the other day.

A group of people had gone to one of the schools (in the Appalachian mountains I think? :confused3 ) where the students that went there were less fortunate. They went to deliver some toys and other items they had collected for the children.

There was one little girl who had chosen a baby doll as her toy, then a short while later she went up to one of the adults there and asked if she could trade her doll for a new toothbrush!

OMG that just made me feel so sad for this sweet child who felt she had to trade her new toy she just got for a toothbrush!! Just breaks your heart to think about it. I am going to share this story with my kids so they will realize just how incredibly lucky they are.

Thats very sad. I live pretty close the to Mnts. Do you know where htis was?

Cute but sad story. I hope someone got a toothbrush for the child.

Feed the Children has done several visits up to the Appalachian Mountains and shown pictures of the desperate situations that some of these children live in. It breaks your heart to know that this is happening right here in the US.

No. My aunt lives in Morristown,TN and she said she heard the story on the news. She did say the school was in the Appalachian mtns but not specifically where. I guess I could ask her. I don't know much about that area. I always thought it was in Kentucky or something. Shows my ignorance.

Well, wherever it was, I agree with ClaraBelle Cow Fan, that it's hard to imagine this happening here in the U.S.
I think the next time I read about a celeb dropping thousands of dollars on another designer purse I will think about this little girl who just wanted a toothbrush. I always tell my DH if we ever win the lotto, don't expect it to last long because if it was up to me I'd give most of it away.

Upper East TN, close to KY. There is a man here in my town who delivers things to kids in that area every year. Some year I hope to go with him. There are poor people all around all of us. People who need the necessities of life. Something to keep in my during the holidays and always.

Thanks. I was thinking another part of the state, edge of middle, towards the south. There is a county near there that this COULD have happened in. There are alot of needy children there.

I think of this so often. I think we tend to just assume that the poor are somewhere else. Our church is way into outreach in Rawanda, which is all fine and good but then you hear stories like this and realize so many people right here at home need our help so much.
