Found a field mouse in our garden yesterday, covered in ants, clearly very ill. We took the little thing inside, tucked him up with cotton wool, fed him, gave him water...

This morning it had passed on.

Very sad :(

What you did was thoughtful; however, I'd say that ants were on to something (no pun intended). I'd have let nature take its course. The Circle of Life and all that.

We got caterpillars in my class this year and watched them spin their chrysalises and then turn into butterflies. Sadly one of the butterflies fell into the sugar water and his wings never fully worked. When the others flew away, he was flapping his wings so hard, but couldn't go. I couldn't bring myself to put him on a branch for a bird to eat, so we kept him in the butterfly tent until he died. I know, I know, it's the circle of life, but I am just soft hearted towards animals.

I work on a farm where we have birds building nests in the ceilings of the horse stalls. This time of year, the carnage of the baby birds begins. When you are an animal lover, it's tough to deal with. Just yesterday, I found two baby birds that were still very very young, just getting some feathers, but totally helpless. When they are that little and fall from the nest, the other birds have nothing to do with them. They were weak when I found them, but I couldn't just do nothing even though I knew what the outcome would be. I made them a nest from some hay and put it in an empty stall HOPING maybe the mom might come to them. But she did not and nature took its course. Still makes me sad.

Rich, that was sweet of you.

That was very thoughtful of you :littleangel:. I love field mice. Every spring/summer I get tons of field mice in the garage. I put sunflower seeds at the bottom of a big bucket with a board leading up to it. They can jump in but not out. Then I take them to Surrender Field (where Cornwalis surrendered to Washington) in Yorktown where there's a TON of land for them to run around in and set them free. :cloud9:

Mouse near/in the house= lunch for my 3 cats....;)

All kidding aside, you have a very soft heart. That was a kind thing to do.

It's the same here! Almost every time my cat is outside she likes to bring me a "present". Although a couple of times the field mice have still been alive and no worse for wear minus a small cowlick or two. They are not easy to trap and let back outside!

But still, poor little mousie!

Aww Rich, that was very kind of you.

I have to say, though, I was waiting for the punchline. I'm so used to your joke threads.
