So the day after Thanksgiving was just a nightmare. As many of you know, DH and I run a horse farm. Well on Friday morning, Dh was leading two horses out of the barn at once. We always take more than one horse out at once. Usually I take 2 or 3 and he takes 2 or 3. Naturally this can be something of a challenge if the horses are acting up or if something startles them. So, DH has two lead ropes in one hand, and he is opening the stall door of a third horse when suddenly one of the horses he is holding goes to bite the other and both of them freak out and run backwards, jerking the ropes out of DH's hand.....
All I hear is him scream.
So I come running into the barn (all 3 horses are running in circles through the barn, loose and all fired up) and DH's is hysterical and his left hand is COVERED in blood. I immediately pray "PLEASE God, don't let him be missing any fingers....."
It seems that when the two horses pulled away, he didn't let go of the ropes like we know we are supposed to. So what happened to him is that his hand was literally ripped apart. Imagine somebody does the vulcan "live long and prosper" thing with their hand....then imagine that the two sets of fingers are tied together, and tied to panicky 1200lb animals and yanked in seperate directions.
He showed me his hand, and I gulped...."We're going to the hospital RIGHT NOW....."
I had to make him sit in the barn office while I gathered up the 3 loose horses (in record time I might add), ran for the car and then got him loaded in (with paper towels and ice). We drove to our doctor's office (which is also and Urgent Car Center) where my wonderful doctor stitched him back together. Poor DH even passed out while sitting on the exam table while doc was checking him out.
The good news? No nerve/muscle/tendon/ligament/or bone damage and only 13 stitches. DH is loaded up with Vicodin and in a lot of discomfort.
Poor guy. Let this be a lesson to all horse owners: LET GO OF THE ROPE!
