Awful accident for DH!

So the day after Thanksgiving was just a nightmare. As many of you know, DH and I run a horse farm. Well on Friday morning, Dh was leading two horses out of the barn at once. We always take more than one horse out at once. Usually I take 2 or 3 and he takes 2 or 3. Naturally this can be something of a challenge if the horses are acting up or if something startles them. So, DH has two lead ropes in one hand, and he is opening the stall door of a third horse when suddenly one of the horses he is holding goes to bite the other and both of them freak out and run backwards, jerking the ropes out of DH's hand.....

All I hear is him scream.

So I come running into the barn (all 3 horses are running in circles through the barn, loose and all fired up) and DH's is hysterical and his left hand is COVERED in blood. I immediately pray "PLEASE God, don't let him be missing any fingers....."

It seems that when the two horses pulled away, he didn't let go of the ropes like we know we are supposed to. So what happened to him is that his hand was literally ripped apart. Imagine somebody does the vulcan "live long and prosper" thing with their hand....then imagine that the two sets of fingers are tied together, and tied to panicky 1200lb animals and yanked in seperate directions.

He showed me his hand, and I gulped...."We're going to the hospital RIGHT NOW....."

I had to make him sit in the barn office while I gathered up the 3 loose horses (in record time I might add), ran for the car and then got him loaded in (with paper towels and ice). We drove to our doctor's office (which is also and Urgent Car Center) where my wonderful doctor stitched him back together. Poor DH even passed out while sitting on the exam table while doc was checking him out.

The good news? No nerve/muscle/tendon/ligament/or bone damage and only 13 stitches. DH is loaded up with Vicodin and in a lot of discomfort.

Poor guy. Let this be a lesson to all horse owners: LET GO OF THE ROPE!

I am so sorry. I was given vicoden when I broke my leg a few years ago. I hated it and flushed it all away. It made me feel worse than the pain. I found I did better with extra strength tylenol and ice... but then a broken leg is not the same as having your hand ripped open. Anyway, if he gets to feeling really awful, it may be the vicoden. I hope he feels better soon.

OUCH!!! Sounds very scary and painful.
Glad to hear there is no serious damage.

Hope is feeling better.

:grouphug: So sorry this happened to your DH. But be thankful that there won't be any permant damage. Hope that he is doing better.

Vicoden makes me extremely sick, and I won't take it. HE seems to tolerate it well. It makes me vomit, dizzy and hallucinate. I usually take 1000mg of Ibuprofen.

How awful! I'm glad to hear he is doing better now and that he didn't lose any fingers. That is very scary.

That sounds horrible. When I was a teenager I was flying my little brothers kite. It went down across the street and I held onto the string. A car caught the string on his antenna and the same thing happened. The string acted as a knife and cut my hand wide open. I agree let go of the rope ( or string). I hopw your DH heals fast.

OMG! That creeped me out just hearing about it. I sure hope his hand recovers fully. Yeesh.

How scary! I'm glad he's going to be OK.

Yipes! That's a pretty bad accident. Keep an eye on that hand. I bet it hurts like the dickens. Bad horse! BAd, bad horse!

That´s aweful. Hope everything heals well and that he won´t be in pain for too long.

Reading that makes me glad that we open the gate to the pasture the horses are supposed to go to, and then we open their stalls and let them go. If they nip along the way, at least we are out of their way.

I hope your husband is feeling better very soon!

Ouch! I hope your dh has a quick recovery!

Wow. I'm glad he's going to be okay. He's very lucky it wasn't worse. If Vicoden is helping much, maybe Percocet or something else would help him more??

I'm sorry your DH was hurt, but happy there is no lasting damage. Hope he recovers quick!

We have two horses, and my oldest DD18 has worked as a stable hand down at the riding barn for years (she now rides at college, for Alfred University!)....she knows- let go of that gosh-darned rope! Doesn't mean she does- she has been pulled flat more than once....

..maybe on vicodin your DH will like this story.....DD18 was moving horses and one of the big geldings broke a rail and was out on the drive. Now, it is a good 1/2 mile to the road, but still....she takes off after him and two of his big gelding buddies. She calls me on the cell and yells "help, now!"...so into the car and off I go (we live at the end of that drive). It is raining, it is muddy, and she is grabbing at anything she can. I pull into the drive, and she has the gelding by the tail. She is essentially waterskiing behind this huge horse and swearing up a storm the whole way. When the threesome see the car, they turn back to the barn and into their stalls (they KNEW they were bad boys!)....I tried very hard to give DD a lecture about hanging on to tails of large hooved animals, and threatened to wash her mouth out for the swearing, except I couldn't stop laughing long enough!

You horse people are crazy.... but aren't they wonderful creatures! Tell your DH that my DD empathizes with him and sends him pixie dust for quick healing!
