im traveling to wdw in june (bad time, i know, but it has to be then) with someone who is on medicine which specifically states avoid exposure to sun. she'll be wearing the clothes with the sunscreen in the fabric, using more sunscreen and wearing a wide hat. i myself am in a scooter.

my question--can you think of any rides/attractions where the "place to wait out of the sun" comment on a GAC would actually be of use? i'm a pretty frequent visitor to wdw, and i've never needed a GAC for my own needs, but i don't pay attention to sun issues, only accessibility ones, and i can't think off hand of where there are long lines that are in the sun. i understand that the bigger issue is the exposure walking between the attractions, but we can try to control how long we are outside as best as we can. i'd just appreciate knowing if there are specific rides and attractions where we might get stuck waiting in the sun. then we could either skip them, fast pass if possible, or possibly ask for a GAC.

thanks for any advice you might have.

It is always worth going to Guest Services and talking to someone. They can help with a decision about whether or not a GAC would be helpful. I use a wheelchair full time, so I have never been in any lines but the accessible ones.

Also, if a GAC is not helpful, just talk to the CM at the ride. They are usually quite helpful and will do their best to give you a hand.

I do know the accessible line for BTMRR is in full sun, so you might want to ride that one at night.

Hi there!

I have a sun-sensitive auto-immune disease and am a 4th generation Floridian, and let me tell you, the two do NOT go together, LOL! But I'm also on my 19th year of APs, so I can maybe be of a little help here.

First, Neutrogena makes the very best sunscreen for down here in these conditions - its the sweatproof 100% SPF one. Yes, the clothes will help tremendously, and were my second thing to tell you, but you must wear that stuff under the clothes - don't make me break out my pictures of what happened when I didn't, its not a pretty sight!

Second, if its in the second half of June, all of the mountains should be fastpassed, if not done at night, and definitely the Indy Motor Speedway. Also the rides like Dumbo, Flying Carpets, the Carousel, and just walking around the lake at Epcot. Remember, there is a difference between heat and sun - not everybody distinguishes between the two, just cooling things down doesn't mean that the sun isn't hitting you, so keep in mind that restaurant waiting might be your biggest problem!

We haven't had much luck with a GAC, but I have the stamp anyway. It won't hurt to get one, but in practicality... its Florida - its going to be hot, and there's not a lot you can do about it. Keep in mind that the First Aid stations will be there when she needs them to rest and cool down, and keep her hydrated and reapply the sunscreen twice as often down here as you do normally (unless you live within a few hundred miles :)

Hope you have a great trip!

thank you both for your answers!

so i went to the neutrogena website http://www.neutrogena.com/category/sun.do and there are a quite a few varieties. i'm assuming it's one of the SPF 100+ ones---but i didn't see one that said sweatproof specifically. is there one specific type which seems to work best?

thank you!!!

Would a parasol be of any help? I know that many people hate the idea of umbrellas at WDW (and I'm one of them) But the extra shade provided might be of benefit as long as she can avoid poking peoples' eyes out (just kidding) as long as she is careful how she holds it when in crowds.

good idea! i will recommend she bring one that folds up and if there's space she can take it out to use. i just checked the crowd calendar and if it's correct it seems lighter that what i was envisioning. we're headed there 6/4-12. are there umbrellas that are better than others for blocking the sun's rays? i'll check around on line, but in case someone knows....

My sister was on an antibiotic with a sun exposure warning this past AUG.
My sister has always had the fairest skin ever. Two shades for her: pale and RED.

As a PP mentioned- She brought along a few cans of spray NEUTROGENA SPF +50 and wore a hat always. She also made sure the tops and tanks she packed weren't low cut on her back. And no shorts, only capris. She even went swimming mid-day almost everyday.

Be deligent with the sunscreen, wear a hat, keep skin exposure to a minimun. HAVE FUN:)

she also had a small compact umbrella and was very careful when she used it ( only a few trimes)

AND- the only ride that stands out with lots of sun exposure if you have to wait in stand-by is Big Thunder Mountain. We decided to do it at night!!

If you scroll down it says it is waterproof and sweat proof.

Regular umbrellas let through a lot of UV rays. If you google sun protection clothing or sun protection umbrellas, you'll find sites that sell actual sun protection umbrellas. If it's really a sun protection umbrella, it will have an SPF rating.

I suggest a UV protection hat or shirt. They are not cheap but they do work. I wear a lot of 3/4 length sleeves in the summer and capri pants. I always look a little odd but it helps prevent multiple problems.

I also put sun screen on every 30 - 45 mins

I'll be down there the first week in June. Nervous with my auto immune problems and DS being on medication. We'll see how it goes.

I'm a fair skinned red head and can't be outside for 5 minutes without starting to burn. Blue Lizard is by far the best sunscreen I have ever used. I can apply it once, swim for hours, and not have to reapply for the rest of the day. It's expensive but worth it because you don't have to use nearly as much of it as most sunscreens.
