So I assume this is impossible..but I thought I'd ask! I already called SW to try to depart Orlando a day later..I'm worried I should have booked for 6 night instead of 5...it seems everyone around here goes for 7-10 nights! Anyway...SW said it would cost an additional $250 to leave a day later :(. Has anyone ever been able to change their flights with little or no cost? thanks...

Southwest works a bit differently than other airlines. If you wish to change your flight at any point in time, it's FREE! However... they do ask that you pay the difference between your current flight and the new flight that you want.

So... if you paid $50 for your original flight, and the only fare bucket left for your new flight is $100, they will charge you the $50 difference.

The GOOD news is that if you originally paid $100, and the new fare is $50, they will cheerfully give you a $50 credit towards your next flight.

Since SW does not have change fees what they are telling you is that the price of the flights has gone UP As I recall you booked on a DING or sale?

Your only way to avoid those price increases would be for SW to have another sale giving you the exact same fare on the flights you now want. Might or might not happen.

Unlike other airlines SW doesn't have any change fees. SW just charges the difference between the fare you paid the fare and the current fare on the flight you want to take.

You didn't post your travel dates. If your trip is in the next week the only fares available will be the full refundable fares and there isn't much you can do.

If your trip is in a few months, and not a peak travel date/time you might be able wait until SW has a DING or other fare sale for your new date and change for a lower fare difference. Very possible if your original fare is something like a normal sale fare; less likely if your original fare is one of the dirt cheap DING fares. You might also look at flying down a day earlier.
