avoiding corkage fee

You won't get flamed by other wine drinkers, because they all do it, and if they say they don't, they're not being honest.

We are wine drinkers, we don't do it and I am being HONEST. We gladly pay a corkage fee when asked.

I suspect that DCL will have thoughts about doing away with carry on booze and wine if and when people don't abide by the rules at large numbers At the Disney parks we see what has happened to the allowance of Handicapped people to circumvent the lines after so many people abused the privilege. Not too many other cruise lines allow carry on booze of any amount for the cruise lines make a lot of money off the markup and selling on board. Keep it up people and the allowance will be a thing of the past IMO.

I think at some point it will go, as it is abused by a few, not all a few, there is nothing wrong having a glass or two in your room, but they say not in public places a few a use it, I have seen it.

DCL did for a while not do much on smoking then bit the bulletin and it's working, so they are starting to enforce things.

We had unlimited Internet in the last people abused it forming groups to use one log in, it went, there was a product called REAS Romantic escape at sea, for people getting married, it had perks like booking Palo early, like Platinum today, it was a used by a few who would book it , it had a cost to be paid at cruise time, then they booked palo in advance and then as their booking window came cancelled it, didn't pay but kept the perks.

It was abused it got cancelled,

It's been long time coming but as all cruise lines know the booze policy hits profits most lines ban it for security but it's to get booze income. But damage to luggage by people putting in bottles in that could also bring about a change.

I think you're right. DCL tried to change it once retroactively, but there was a huge backlash by people who booked their cruises under the old BYO policy, and DCL backed down.

My guess is the next time they try to change it, they will say, "For all cruises booked on or after X date . . ." or "For all sailings on or after Y date . . ."

. . . It's been long time coming but as all cruise lines know the booze policy hits profits most lines ban it for security but it's to get booze income.
In light of DCL's significant cruise fare price jumps, I wonder if they simply decided to acquiesce to the BYO policy, and instead increase cruise fares to make up for any lost booze income.

It could be like the "free soda" on DCL -- where the price of unlimited soda was simply built into the cruise fare. Remember back when DCL sold soda packages? Or when they increased cruise fares, but everyone then got "free soda?"

This is what I think. I think DCL has built soda and any potentially "lost" alcohol revenue from allowing guests to BYOB directly into the cruise fares.

As a side point, I think allowing people to bring in their own alcohol actually helps DCL make more alcohol money. I enjoy wine and fruity drinks. I brought two bottles of my favorite Moscato onboard. However, I did not bring a blender, mixers and rum/vodka/gin, etc to make my own mixed drinks. So I would have a glass of my wine before dinner and be all relaxed and definitely NOT interested in turning down the drinks offered to me at dinner. If I hadn't been allowed to bring any alcohol onboard I might have just opted for an alcohol-free cruise to save money. But because I already felt like I was saving something, I had no problems splurging on a drink of the day (every day!) and other drinks that sounded good to me. And I ended up bringing most of the wine back off the ship with me, lol!

On out Med cruise, we were able to trade in two bottles of the standard wine package for one very nice bottle from the premium package for a special dinner.

Hello

Can I just say your signature line is very very long and throws out IPad users IPad squeezes down all the other posts as yours is longer, are you able to edit it please?

Yeah, same here. They just need to add a few spaces to their signature text line and it would break just fine,

Sorry, :offtopic:, but I have no problems at all using my iPad!

Well it is on mine, still now!

I hope everyone is happy.:cool1: I had no problem on my phone seeing posts. If I did I put 2 fingers together & spread them to read posts that needed to be bigger and slid them side to side to read them, then shrunk them after. I couldn't do anything sooner, because my phone is almost impossible to work with inside the userCP so I needed to be on my home computer.

My two cents. I bring my own bottle(s) on board. I have a glass in the room while getting ready for dinner... DH and I refer to this practice as "pre gaming" then I order a glass at dinner and I'm set.

How does the wine package work with Palo? I'm interested in a wine package and we're eating at Palo on our first night.

Also, if I don't finish the bottle (and I won't because I'll be the only one drinking it) can I take it back to my room to enjoy there the next day?

Thanks!

How does the wine package work with Palo? I'm interested in a wine package and we're eating at Palo on our first night.

I believe if you let your server know you are dining in Palo, it should appear but I'm not 100% certain on that.

Yes, you can take it with you or they can hold it for the next night's meal.

Still have the lanyard. The refillable mug, tho, has long since given up the ghost.

That's funny! I still bring my refillable mug from when we got the soda package on our first DCL cruise in 2003 to all my cruises - people ALWAYS ask me where I got and if it was still available to sell on the ship.

I saves on solo many wasted paper cups at the drinks station.

.........and it is handy for those occasional self-supplied rum and cokes....:rolleyes1

Fantastic thanks.

Yes, you can take it with you or they can hold it for the next night's meal.

The wine package is on the PC system, each time you order a bottle the server logs it on the system, so you can get a bottle anywhere, Palo or the MDRs, a half used bottle will follow you around, but to make sure tell your server if you want it to move say to Palo so it's ready.

They can find out if your in Palo, I have had calls in the past on my Palo night if I will use my MDR table, this was from the restaurant manager, I had told my servers that my children would still use the MDR table alone, but I think they wanted the table for some cruisers switching from late go main.

We weren't really wine drinkers until after we started cruising on DCL - we did a wine tasting once and were pretty much hooked! Tastings on the ship and usage of the wine package to try new things let us explore somewhat safely, and we've expanded our explorations slowly at home.

One thing we've often done before the trip is price our favorite wines that DCL carries at home, vs. on the ship. Adding the corkage fee, we make a decision as to whether or not it's worth the hassle to carry on. We did carry on for one cruise, but pretty much every other cruise we haven't bothered.

For example - we enjoy Fairy Tale Cuvee - which you can only get from Disney. When we last purchased it at WDW, it was $36/bottle. DCL's site is showing it as $55/bottle - so it's $1 less to buy it on the ship. We also enjoy Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio - we can get it at Costco for ~$20, or elswhere locally for $25. It's $44 on DCL, so not much of a savings (if any) to carry it on. For reds, the Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages is $9.97 at Total Wine, and $34 on board - so again, a small savings, but not enough to overcome the hassle of transportation (especially if I have to fly).

Now I will say - we don't usually spend more than $20 on a bottle of wine to enjoy at home. If we know we love a wine, we might - but those are typically wines we've tried by the glass or bottle on DCL! :rotfl2: And in those cases the savings isn't usually that much.

We're planning a Baltic next year, and hope to be in France before the cruise - *maybe* we'll pick up a bottle or two to bring on board with us (we'll see). If we do, we'll most likely enjoy them in our room or *maybe* on deck watching the scenery (Yes, I know, not within the rules) but I doubt we'd take them to the dining room without paying the fee.
