our party consists of 4 adults and 1 toddler and i've been reading that some restaurants tend to stick parties of 5 that include children on 4-tops. is there anything i can do when i get my ADRs? i would like room in case the app and entrees come out near the same time and some room for kiddo to draw or for me to put my ipad for her to watch some cartoons if she is tired or not in the mood to eat.

I don't think that is normally true. You should book your reservations for 5 since you have 5 and I don't think you will have an issue.

I've had several meals at DW as a party of 5 and never had that problem. Maybe I was lucky but I honestly don't believe it the norm to sit 5 at a table for 4.

Thinking about some of the restaurants we've been to where the tables are so close together, there's no way they could fit a 5th person at a table for 4! :) Le Cellier, Les Chefs, Rose and Crown and CRT come to mind.

You need to book your ADR's as a party of 5, even if you don't plan to order anything for your toddler. She is counted as a whole person for fire code regulations and restaurant capacity reasons.

This should avoid you being seated at a 4-top.
