We had a wonderful week in Orlando. However, there is now a pall cast over our trip because we came home to find Bud, our turtle that I'd had for 20 years, dead.

I never thought to leave the petsitter a list of things not to do.

We moved here 10 months ago and don't know the neighbors well, so I paid a coworkers 16 year old daughter almost $20 a day to feed our cats.

I had her and her mom come to our house a couple of weeks ago so I could give them a walk-through and introduce them to the cats. I had 2 written pages of information for them. I included everything I could think of: our resort; the name we were booked under; our reservation #; the resort number; my cell # and a note that since it is Tracphone they might not be able to get me on it, so they should try the resort first; a letter to the vet authorizing them to seek care for our pets and information about how to contact me so I could pay via phone if needed; my insurance agent's #; our itinerary; and a phone number of a relative who lives about an hour from us.

I showed them where everything was in the house, told them that they didn't need to worry about bringing in the mail, and letting them know that Bud was free roaming but that he would just do his own thing while we were gone.

I also told them I'd leave a copy of the resort info on my kitchen counter- which I did.

We got home around 10:45 pm last night. I opened the front door and heard water running. I checked the kitchen, then headed to the bathroom. My tub was completely full...the overflow valve kept it from flooding my condo and the one below mine. It was full of lettuce...and there was Bud, floating in it, dead.

My kids were hysterical. Immediately my older son began saying that our going on vacation cost Bud his life.

I called the petsitter's mom. She said they had first seen Bud Friday. They left a message on my cell phone, but never called the resort, my relatives, or the vet. Yesterday afternoon they decided Bud had to have water. For some reason they put the plug in the tub, put him in, turned the water on, and left!!! WHY would they have left the water running? If they'd have just put a little water in he would have been fine. As it is, he drowned before we got home.

I really called just to ask what had happened. I didn't make any accusations and thought I was calm. What upset me most was that they didn't even apologize. My coworker said, "Well, I don't know what to say."

The first thing my younger son did today was write a letter to a friend back in MO to tell her about his turtle being killed.

This has tainted all our good memories of Orlando. I might as well have taken $3000 and burned it in the fireplace.

A strong warning to all pet owners: Don't think that the neighbor girl will be a good choice to watch your pets. I thought they'd get better care, have someone to spend time with them, etc. Instead, poor Bud paid for our fun with his life. For the same price I could have hired a bonded petsitter. I will never make this mistake again!

I just wanted to say sorry for your loss, having a pet that long, I know he was a part of your family, but don't feel guilty, you thought he would be safe, maybe your post will help others, and avoid this happening to someone else's pet.

I am so sorry about Bud. I know it is so hard to lose a part of your family.

Three years ago when we went to Disney World I had a friend's mother watch our dog at her house. We got a phone call while on vacation that the dog had run out the door and they could not catch her. We never did find her. We searched for days and days when we came home. It was terrible. We are planning our next trip now and my boys are worried about our pets again.

I am so sorry for your loss. We, too, had a pet tragedy at WDW. Actually, we hadn't even arrived yet! My sister was watching my 13yo Shih-Tzu for us...as soon as our plane landed in Orlando I had a message on my cell phone to call her. Peanut was not doing well & she asked me what she should do...I told her to take her to the emergancy vet (it was a Sunday)...by the time they arrived there Peanut was in cardiac arrest...I had to give the OK to put her to sleep as we drove under the big "Welcome" sign at the entrance to the WDW property. That night we went to DTD for dinner but no one was in the mood for fun...my then 4yo autistic DD was oblivious & she's the only reason I had any fun that trip at all.

Sad things can happen even with the best of care. I know your turtle will be missed, but try to focus on the good memories you have of the trip. Maybe in a few weeks you could spend a day making a scrapbook with the kids so they'll have a way to look back & smile. I am not able to seperate the two events because of the timing of things for us, but in time you'll be able to remember the trip fondly, I'm sure.

Only true pet lovers can understand.

What I don't understand is this: The 16 year old's mom says "they" decided Bud needed water. So she was there with her daughter. How could anyone with even the smallest amount of common sense think leaving the water running in a plugged tub was a good idea? That alone is a dumb idea. :scared1: Add in the fact that they put the turtle in there?!?!? Double the :scared1: :scared1: There are just somethings that you would expect anyone above the age of 10 to know. These people just aren't playing with a full deck.

I am very sorry for your family's loss of your beloved turtle. :sad1:

So sorry hun - thats terrible! Again, it can happen to anyone, even after leaving your pet with professionals. Years ago when I was in HS I worked at a pet boarding place (oh it was awful - all I did was push poop around!), and a dog accidently got out and hit by a car. When the owner came to pick him up (he was a big army guy), and the owner of the place told him what happened, he just stood there and cried. I felt so bad for the guy, even though I was no where near the dog at the time of his excape. Anyway, sorry for your loss, and I hope you didn't pay them!! What a dumb mother!

Thank you all for your kindness! I'm so sorry to hear that so many of us have stories like this. Maybe we need to start a Bluefairy club and try to find other disers in our area who will swap petsitting!

I love the scrapbooking idea. I have everything but the developed photos. I think you're right...I'll wait a week or two to have them developed, then have a big scrapbooking party with my boys. That may help to separate the two events and put the sparkle back on our trip!

I really do appreciate your kindness and understanding!

That is really just so so sad. I can't imagine how I'd feel if something happened to one of our pets while we were on vacation. just know it is not your fault. (((HUGS)))

Goodness I'm so sorry to hear this tragic story. My regards to your family.

How terrible... Hugs to all of you. Your coworker does not know what to say??? How about an explanation of how anybody could do something so stupid?? I really feel for you and your family. :(

 I'm so sorry for your loss. I know how much pets can be part of your family and how bad things can sometimes happen to them while on vacation. Several years ago, my dad's co-worker was watching my cats while we were away. The oldest cat got out. We told the petsitter that if he did get out to grab the cat food and shake it. The cat never goes far and will always come back for food. We came home and found the petsitter waiting for us. He told us Boots had been missing for 3 days, he saw him run out, but because he had the dog on his leash, he never bothered looking for Boots. Not even after he put the dog in the house. He said it like it wasn't a big deal. I still thank god every day that Boots showed up an hour later in my neighbor's yard... hungry, dirty and a little scared, but healty. I can't imagine what you're feeling.  I'm sure your beloved pet would want you and your boys to know it wasn't your fault and that he's probably having a wonderful time up in turtle paradise.
