Anyone have experiene with this software? Particularly the free version. I keep seeing this recommended in the newspaper and my Norton is expiring. Wondering if this is a good program to use. How necessary are the spyware protection parts of Norton, etc.? Is the Windows Firewall enough to protect against other things that the Antivirus will not?

It has a 30 day free trial and is the best AV program. It's $40 for one year and $60 for 2 years.
With AV programs you usually get what you pay for. It is decent but not that great. The Windows firewall isn't that good. You can get zonealarm for free though. Its a much better firewall program.

I'm a Network Admin. I use AVG Free on all my systems at home. I've used it on friends comptuers to locate viruses Norton couldn't find. There is no need to pay for Norton or McAfee anymore.

I also use ZoneAlarm free for my firewall (though Windows is fine) and LavaSoft Ad-Aware for my spy-ware removal tool.

All free. Common sense really dictates the amount viruses and spyware you'll end up with regardless of what you use. Don't go to Limewire or P2P sites, don't open emails from those you don't know and just generally be smart about the sites you visit and you'll be fine.

AVG will cease to be free on January 15.

Hi there,
I've been using AVG for the past few years with no problems at all. But jipsy is right above.. I keep getting a notice on my pc that it won't be free in Jan. Ithought the notice that I have had suggests a free alternative but have been unable to find it. I can't decide whether to pay for the new version or to go to McAfee. I had a trial of Norton and my pc was never the same afterwards and I had to uninstall it.
Sorry I can't be of more help

AVG will still be free after Jan. There is another free version from them that I have downloaded on my computer.

I had used Norton, McAfee, and AVG by far is the best.

I have been using AVG the free one for years. I have never had a problem. I'll never go back to Norton again. The computer geeks at my work swear by AVG's free addition for their home systems.

Same here....

I agree with everything you said.

I should also add that I agree about the common sense comment, but unfortunately I don't have sole control of the computer. My DH is kind of computer illiterate, is getting better, but really doesn't know what he's doing when searching for various things he'll click on about anything, same with the kids.

So I went to download the new free software tonight, and lo and behold, where I saw the free edition yesterday, it was gone. It looks like they might not offer it after all. If anyone thinks they still do and can find it, a link would be greatly appreciated.

If I can't find that link, in your opinion would it be better to just renew Norton, go with a different paying version of AVG or McAfee. My computer isn't the fastest thing on the block, so the one that would least bog down the computer, yet do it's job would be the best.

here you go for the free version but I did see they mentioned after Jan 15th it won't be free any more :(

I had norton and it missed so many bugs on my computer that I think I will try paying for AVG next year and see how that goes.

GRISOFT is announcing a new version of the AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. This new 7.5 version with improved performance and full compatibility with the latest Windows Vista version is available. Users that are using AVG Free 7.1 will be provided with a specific dialog, within the next few weeks, with the opportunity to choose the right option fulfilling their needs. AVG Free 7.1 version will be discontinued on 15th of Jan 2007.

AVG Free 7.1 will be discontinued but AVG Free 7.5 will be fully functional. It's just an upgrade.

Thank you! I did end up finding the free version through cnet.com last night. I ran a full system scan and found 6 viruses that obviously Norton missed.

Thanks again!

Thanks CaptKangaroo! You don't happen to have the links to ZoneAlarm and LavaSoft do you? :teeth:
