Can anyone give me an idea of the cost of replacing about 10 windows - no sliding doors, just general windows. I don't need anything fancy but I have NO IDEA how much this would cost. I've heard anywhere from $3000-$15000!!!! Any help is appreciated!

you should be able get each window for about 300-350 installed

Don't know if these windows are available in your area, but we installed HARVEY brand windows about 15 years ago and they are still just as good as when we installed them. Nothing fancy, basic plain replacement windows with a 1/2 screen. Then they were roughly $160/window, and I have an older home with large windows. Check out building supply places.

Are you looking at doing replacement windows (you keep all your old track and trim, the new windows go in the old tracks) or new construction (entire old window goes out and a new one goes in - all new track, sills, and trim, unless you can salvage your old trim)?

We just replaced our old windows with new construction ones. We had quite a bit of rot on our sills, plus with new construction they were able to reinsulate around the windows. For 13 windows including replacing and staining all of the trim it was about $6500. We used Harvey windows and so far are very happy with them.

I don't think that there really is an average. It's really difficult to compare one brand/model to another. Kind of like buying a mattress. ;)

We're also in the Chicago area. We replaced 10 sliding windows with 19 double hungs ( I hated the sliding windows) as well as a picture window and a patio door about 4 years ago. The total was right around $10,000. Honestly, I think that we got ripped off a bit. They're not the best windows but they're better than what we had.

We replaced two windows a few months back, one was a double window so basically two put together, and we paid $732. We did new construction since we hated the old ones and are very happy with them. We only replaced those 2 due to damage from a wind storm earlier in the year, now I'm wanting to replace the rest! They are wonderful!

We are replacing 12 sliders with 16 double hung windows and a sliding glass door using a local contractor for $8500. We had one estimate as high as 13K and another for $9500. These are not Anderson or Pella, but they meet all the gov't standards for the rebate (which we won't get because we already used it last year). We were happy with the quality, and the warranty and the fact that we were giving our money to a local business owner.

We're having new vinyl windows installed tomorrow to replace the pieces of junk that were put in by the builder 12 years ago.

We're doing 11 windows (one awning, 4 crank outs and the rest double hungs (in the bedrooms)), and our total is right around $7,000.

We picked the local guy over a "national" company for this exact reason. :)

AND every part of the windows are manufactured and made right here in WI.

We replaced 18 double hungs last year for about $10,500. These were top rated UV windows, so we did qualify for the $1500 tax rebate. We used a local manufacturer because they are guaranteed for life, without having to deal with a middle man. If anything happens, the manufacturer comes out to fix them.

When we started looking, prices ranged from $10,000-$30,000. You really have to be careful pricing windows, because as PPs have stated, it's difficult to compare different brands and the prices are all over the place.

We just replaced our windows with Pella from Lowes - regular vinyl double pane, and 4 wood clad vinyl with blinds inside- 27 total windows for around $13k. We had estimates from local contractors as well as Lowes, Andersen and Home Depot. Lowe's was one of the lowest prices we were quoted, but I was most comfortable with Lowe's standing behind the product and the installation.

Thank you all for your help. I guess it's time to get some quotes! I think we may have to do half the house this year and half next.

We replaced 6 window, 5 of them being large and it costed us $4,000.00. We went with Window World and they have a lifetime guarentee on their windows. I would certainly get a quote from them. We are happy with our new windows and have several friends/family who have used them as well and are happy.

We used WindowWorld too and are very happy with the product :)
