OK I was really bored over my lunch hour so while I ate at my desk I thought I would compile some average stats on CB threads. (I love numbers so this was actually enjoyable to me).
I wondered what the response rate to a thread is based on # of replies vs. # of views. I was also curious about what the average number of views and replies would be on the first page of the CB.
At about noon today there were 50 threads (not including announcements) on the first page of the CB. These threads has a combined total of 4,950 replies and 46,668 views! (We really do spend WAY too much time here!
)
This means that the average thread has a response rate in the neighborhood of 10.6%.
The average number of replies to a thread would be 99.
The average views for a thread would be 933.36.
These numbers were skewed by what I call "super-threads. These are threads that have hundreds of replies and thousands of views. There were 8 super-threads on the first page of the CB at the time I took my sample. I thought that to get a better picture of the average thread I would need to eliminate the super-threads from my sample.
This left me with 42 posts with a total of 586 replies and 6,691 views. (See how skewed the numbers are with the super-threads included!)
This means that the average thread has a response rate in the neighborhood of 8.8%.
The average number of replies to a thread would be 13.95.
The average number of views to a thread would be 159.31.
Isn't that just the kind of information you wanted to learn today? Now you know that if a thread you start gets fewer than 14 replies and 160 views that your thread was below average.
