OK I was really bored over my lunch hour so while I ate at my desk I thought I would compile some average stats on CB threads. (I love numbers so this was actually enjoyable to me).

I wondered what the response rate to a thread is based on # of replies vs. # of views. I was also curious about what the average number of views and replies would be on the first page of the CB.

At about noon today there were 50 threads (not including announcements) on the first page of the CB. These threads has a combined total of 4,950 replies and 46,668 views! (We really do spend WAY too much time here! ;) )

This means that the average thread has a response rate in the neighborhood of 10.6%.

The average number of replies to a thread would be 99.

The average views for a thread would be 933.36.

These numbers were skewed by what I call "super-threads. These are threads that have hundreds of replies and thousands of views. There were 8 super-threads on the first page of the CB at the time I took my sample. I thought that to get a better picture of the average thread I would need to eliminate the super-threads from my sample.

This left me with 42 posts with a total of 586 replies and 6,691 views. (See how skewed the numbers are with the super-threads included!)

This means that the average thread has a response rate in the neighborhood of 8.8%.

The average number of replies to a thread would be 13.95.

The average number of views to a thread would be 159.31.

Isn't that just the kind of information you wanted to learn today? Now you know that if a thread you start gets fewer than 14 replies and 160 views that your thread was below average. :teeth:

Now the question is..
Will this thread be below or above average??;)

ok, if you say so.

All those numbers just made my eyes cross. LOL I am not a numbers person. :teeth: I will say that is interesting though.

My threads are usually below average. So what's your point? ;)

Ack, now I feel the pressure! I will now be counting the replies to my threads to make sure they are "above average". Thanks, Becka! JK, ;) , I can't believe you like doing that sort of thing. I hyperventilate when I have to balance the check book.

Wow, I don't think I've ever been this bored over lunch.... ;)

You do some interesting things when you are bored :)

What is even sadder is that I have been wondering about the answers to these questions for weeks now!!!! What I would really like to see is a comparision of the different high traffic boards (CB vs. Resort Board vs. Theme Park board, etc.). I think I need professional help.

I am always looking for patterns and relationships in numbers. The answer to some universal question such as why we are here on Earth could be buried in the numbers right here on the DIS!!! What do you expect from someone who majored in math???? :p

Thanks Becka for pointing out all us underachievers. Underachievers unite. Let us start our own thread and see if we can achieve underachiever recognition.

Becka, You do love numbers! LOL, that was a quite an exercise just to entertain yourself because you were bored. When I'm bored I tend to stare off into space or something...I better go find that underachievers post, lol.

I thought it was interesting, Becka. Thanks. My forehead was furrowed over the avg replies being 99. Then you mentioned the "super threads"....good name for them.

Gosh Becka, normally during lunch I just, I dunno eat lunch and DIS. You mean now I need to post threads and then count, or do I need to count before I post to make sure I'm not messing up averages. Where was that underachievers' board again?

Does the DIS grade on a curve? Can I do extra credit to attain "above average" ranking?

(Can I wash Pete's car, walk Lola for Cathy, or ask to hear the story of Alex's dog being neutered one more time??;) )

I don't know if I am just misreading a few posts here or not but I never meant to insult anyone or imply that anyone's posts are not worthy. I wasn't trying to imply that if you didn't get a lot of responses to a thread that you are an "underachiever". I was really just trying to be a little silly. :jester: Every post here on the CB is worthy regardless of the number of replies and views. I really hope that I did not offend anyone. :(

Now with that out of the way I wonder if I can prove that the function defined by the square root of Dan's total post count divided by the sum of the super-thread average and the absolute value of the average resort board replies is uniformly continuous? :jester:

Becka, maybe some of us should have put (Joke) by ours (at least I was kidding). I know recently there have been questions about if folks were joking or were being serious. I guess maybe we all need to make sure we are a little more clear. I thought your stats were really cute.
