Avatar in Animal Kingdom a bad idea?

Just to get it out of the way, I'm not a big fan of the movie. It was visually interesting, but If I want to watch Dances with Wolves...I'll watch Dances with Wolves. I understand the motivation behind it, I mean the movie made $$$$$$. But, I think that there were plenty of other properties that would have a more broad appeal. Harry Potter is a home run for Universal because the books/films have a huge following that is equal parts young/old. I don't recall kids clamoring for the latest Avatar merchandise and with the movie pushed back another year, the cross promotional opportunity is gone. Now, build a complete Star Wars themed park and I will be there twice a year with bells on!
Can I buy season passes now??? Cooool.

I can't wait for Avatar land and I think it is an absolute perfect fit for Animal Kingdom. The movie is all about conservation as is AK. I bet the land really takes conservation education to a whole new level.

In regards to the movie even if it doesn't do well I really don't think that matters- I bet the graphics will be great and they will try to bring the beauty of the land even more to life so it will be even more of a "wow factor" when you visit AK. Can you really say you wouldn't want to take a boat ride through that beautiful land or fly over it similar to Soarin?

I never saw Avatar and will probably never see it. It never interested me. As far as it breaking records...I think some of it has to do with the 3D elements and the additional cost to see it in 3D.

My take is that I don't see younger kids being interested in Avatar. I don't think you can compare it to Splash Mountain. That ride is themed with cartoon characters and plopped right in the middle of MK! Of course kids will love it.

I think a lot of the disappointment is that so many of us heard rumors of a Dragon themed area or mythical creatures area. I personally woudl have loved to have seen them do something like that as well. Disney has so many animal stories in their vault- they really missed an opportunity. I am not sure what prompted them to turn to Avatar:confused3

Like others have said if it is well themed and the attractions are good then it will be worth it for Disney. I would not make a special trip there to see it but if I was vacationing in Disney then of course I would go. I just wonder how many people would actually make a special trip to see it?

My four year old didn't like Splash Mountain- thought is was boring.

I don't get why people don't understand why Disney picked Avatar for AK. The entire Movie is about how we, as humans, consume and waste and how the creatures of Avatar are all about love for the land and conservation. AK is all about love for the land and conservation. Tie that in with the beauty of the movie and graphics it is an absolute perfect fit.

If they make the area look like Pandora, it will be a win for AK. Add in two new E-ticket rides and it's a double win. It doesn't matter to me if the movie is good or if the new movie even makes it to the screen. Having a new and beautifully themed area with big rides is something to look forward to.

I've been waiting for the mythical area ever since the park opened. (The Dragon in the sign at the entrance). They even used to have a dragon making noise and belching out smoke from a 'cave' along the river to the left as you went over the bridge into the Oasis. This makes up for this area never being made.

Maybe they can still fit Treebeard in? He was all about conservation and he kicked some Orc butt when he discovered that they weren't.

On the lines of "should we put space themed stuff in with animals" ... Should we put a Make-believe-land focused around an animated film in the section of EPCOT that is supposed to be focused on the World?? :rolleyes1

I agree with those who have mentioned that the message of conservation fits perfectly with what AK is portraying.

Actually, I think Disney jumped that shark when they added the noisy rides in DinoLand and Mount Everest! Nothing like looking at the monkey and animal exhibits and hearing continual screaming in the background :lmao: I always wondered if anyone did a study on how those noise factors disturb the habitats :confused3

Does anyone remember when this was originally proposed, the date being tossed around for opening was 2015, then it got moved to 2016. Now I think they delayed it to coincide with the new release year for the movie. However, with James Cameron's reputation for OCD on everything and incessant delays, I betcha that park won't open until 2018

I don't think it belonged in AK, but that's moot now.

My biggest concern is I think they took a HUGE gamble on a trilogy that doesn't even exist yet. Yes, the first film was a blockbuster. Part two could stink.

My wife, my chidren and I all have zero interest in Avatar. Now, some of the rides in Avatar land will prove popular for two reasons: people generally appreciate new attractions, and Disney will probably spend big to get the latest in ride tech and ride creativity. But they could use all that new ride tech and creativity on "Magic Carrot Land" and people would love that, too, even if just for the new ride tech and creativity. So Avatar Land, Magic Carrot Land, The Ride of the Prairie Dog Land, or whatever, the ride technology and creativity is what may draw people in.

:lmao: Well put

I liked it too...loved it actually. I never understood the hate at all. I think the world will fit in nicely at AK with its conservation theme.

Unfortunately, they just pushed back the next movie to 2017!

Same here, we really liked the movie and are looking forward to the new area in AK. Tons of possibilities imo! :thumbsup2

As many sequels do

YUP..Not to mention that it was announced today that the sequel is delayed at least a year from its original release date..Cameron is behind on the script

Well it's coming, so I'm kind of past the whole "they shouldn't use Avatar" thing. Like it or not WDW is getting Avatar.

I didn't like the movie, but it WAS beautiful. Maybe it'll at least look good.

I'm the same, i didn't particularly enjoy the movie but the artist impressions look awesome!

For those that earlier on talked about a Middle Earth park somewhere... getting the rights would be the issue for any company eyeballing this idea. The Tolkien family would very likely never license a Middle Earth theme park.

I guess it doesn't matter if I would do it or not. It's being done. The question is, will I want to go see it? Yes, yes I do want to see it. That's all that matters in the end.

Avatar Land, Magic Carrot Land, The Ride of the Prairie Dog Land

Ride of the Prarie Dog Land . . . when, where . . .I can't wait. Can I get FastPass+ ressies now.

I would love to start a thread on how a relative who's also a cast member/bus driver told me that WDW discovered a secret stash of Walt's memoirs detailing his plans for Ride of the Prarie Dog Land and how imagineers have started on the project - to be built where River Country used to be . . .

I wish it were true that they were going to add SOMETHING new to Hollywood Studios. At least refurbish that awful and outdated Great Movie Ride!

They are refurbishing TGMR, new sponsor is Turner Classic Movies if I remember correctly.

Oh, please do! I've never heard of this project but it sounds weird.
