'Avatar,' 'Coco' attractions are coming to Disneyland — and other big news from D23

Not to get technical but it was only for 10 months ok r the parks reopened.

I think we will likely know more about where this stuff is going by year end and we will get more details on Disneyland forward then to. I don’t see them being able to build both of these areas in the existing park boundaries and we already know that the avengers extension is going in the wdi parking lot.
Thank you for the correction! The multiple years was certain parks at WDW without trams.

I feel so bad for WDW, losing Rivers of America. I would be beyond upset if they did that at Disneyland.

The Coco ride looks really cool but I can't imagine where they'll put it. I'm bummed about Avatar land because it doesn't seem to fit in with the park and I'm worried it will take over something great like Redwood Creek.

I'm surprised they need to expand Avengers campus to fit the new rides in. That area seems to have alot of empty space where they could fit at least 1 attraction.

I agree, I feel bad for WDW with ROA but I'm sure they will make MK their own. The two US castle parks will now be REALLY different!

I think one of the Avengers rides is going into existing space, across from where Spidey does the stunt show to the right when you walk in off the parade route. The major Thanos ride is going in the back behind Guardians where there's an expansion pad. The land is between Guardians and Cars Land right on Harbor. I believe the entrance will be by that new Avengers store they just opened last year. That's the way it looks at least from the concept art.

That's what's so bizarre about the Coco ride. I do not see anywhere in DCA where it can go. I don't believe the rumors that Grizzly Peak is going away. That's an iconic ride and it seems challenging to take down an entire mountain. Redwood Creek I also find unlikely. Hotel guests wouldn't like it going away and they just did a multi month refurb. They also use the area for OBB.

I do believe Avatar in Hollywood is possible. No idea about Coco. Maybe they use some area in Paradise Gardens?

Most of the Day of the Dead entertainment is in the Paradise Gardens area- from the Pixar Pier gate to in front of Jumping Jellyfish.

What is in those structures between Incredicoaster and Katella?

Midway mania’s show building, Backstage facilities, parade barns.

I think it's backstage services. There's a road it looks like for parade floats and service vehicles. Maybe there's a way for them to do something back there like they did to add Galaxy's Edge or Runaway Railway. They somehow made room backstage for those. I remember how crazy it was when they made room for Indy way back in the 90's! That seemed crazy back then.

Isn't the Indy ride actually under DTD?

No. It’s on the other side of the tram route. You can see it from the tram. It was built ontop of the old eyore parking lot.
MASSIVE show building. They actually had to re-route the monorail to build it. They built all of DCA and didn't even move the monorail beam!

Supposedly avatar is going to be the Shanghai pirates ride system which I have heard nothing but raves about.
Ah, I hadn't heard that, so I watched a video of that ride. You are right that it does look really cool! Now the only disappointment is having to wait so many years until they build it!

I own at VGC and this would NOT be a good thing to me. I don't want to walk from a beautiful Arts and Craft style hotel into the Avatar stuff. Yuck. Walking into the current space the way it is is absolutely perfect. It's the exact correct "vibe." Avatar would kill that vibe.

If it's like Shanghai Pirates, I think it will be good. I'm glad it will be a boat ride because DCA is lacking in family-friendly rides.

Is the boat ride the only thing planned for the Avatar area? No other rides? No shops? Just the one ride? So it's not exactly a proper land then, right?
Agreed. I hope that the new Avatar land isn't right outside of the Grand Cal. That would be a very jarring experience to go from the Craftsman style into an alternative universe. Plus, then we can't go from Grizzly River Run right back to the hotel room and dry off!

That's a good point about family-friendly rides. I imagine that Flight of Passage can be challenging for people with back and mobility issues to enjoy.

I'm still hoping that just maybe they add a Flight of Passage type of ride in addition to the boat ride so that there are two rides in that area. After all they have two rides in Animal Kingdom with the Navi River journey. Here's hoping!

I didn't wait in line to see the Imagineering displays for the new lands/attractions. This picture is from Scott Gustin. It does look like it has the same bones as the Grizzly. And while I think they would never remove the Grizzly, I also thought that they would never remove the CALIFORNIA letters or, for that matter, the ROA at WDW.

Also, does anyone else think that the Lion King looks like Tiana's?

Lion King for paris is likely going to use tiana/splash’s layout.

I'm putting my bets on:
  • Avatar is a revision/redesign of Grizzly River Run. There's no way I read the description of this ride and think "OH... a brand new get-soaked/exciting/emotional water ride IN ADDITION to GRR." This will almost certainly replace GRR.
  • One of the Marvel/Avengers rides goes behind the Quinjet facade building into the parking lot.
  • The other Marvel/Avengers ride goes into the Hyperion.
  • Coco will be an extension of Pixar Pier in the area just north of Paradise Gardens Bandstand, possibly including the elimination of Goofy's Sky School.

If grizzly is replaced then take the California out of the theme park's name. There is nothing that denotes California except Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, Buena Vista Street and Soarin. I am not sure that Grizzly will be replaced.....too close for the construction to the GCH. What they could do is get rid of the lake where world of Color is and put AVATAR there...the water component and pipes are there but I do not see that happening. Or get rid of Paradise Pier entirely and put Avatar there.

Here’s a thought: if the new Avengers ride goes into/behind HQ where Quinjet is parked…what happens to the Red Car Trolley and tracks? That is the barn where it’s parked each night (I’ve seen it go in lots of nights). Will this, too, go away?

If so, we are losing more and more of the “California” aspect of California Adventure…a new identity/name is definitely called for. Can’t be Pixar Park cuz it has Marvel and will have Avatar….anybody got any ideas? I mean, besides “The Former Parking Lot Known as….” 🤣😂

I assume they can make a new location behind GOTG/the walkwalk near cars land

I don't see that as a problem. You keep the barn where it is.
The entrance to the ride would be roughly under the Quinjet. There would be a hallway/queue/pre-show building next to the barn. The show building would fill the current parking lot behind the barn.

(You could actually fit two show buildings in that parking area... it's a huge space.)
