Availability the week of a trip?

We leave in 4 days, and today I was able to switch our SSR reservation to RIV, but it has left me with 13 extra points that are now in holding (and we definitely won't be taking another trip before the end of our UY in December). Where we REALLY want to be is VGF so we don't have a split stay (we move to VGF for the second half of our trip), but nothing has been available so far. I know I got lucky with the RIV rooms that came open this morning, but do things usually open up 1-2 days before trips? Or am I stalking the site for no reason?
 
You just never know. But, I would give MS a call too and just make sure nothing is open they can see that you don’t.

I could have changed my trip from SSR to almost anywhere in the days before we left last week. BLT standard and VGF were the only options I never saw come up. Seriously, BWV standard view was open multiple times as was BCV and CCV at least once. So, I'd keep checking if you can.

OTOH, I'm really glad I didn't switch because we were given a 1 bedroom at SSR vs the studio we booked. And it was ready before noon!
 
Of course there was a glitch this morning in the site and it showed a studios and a 2 bedroom available at Grand Floridian - got all excited until the dwarves showed up! I'll keep checking. We have never stayed at Riviera, and if it weren't for the fact that our first night is the Boo Bash with 2 little ones then I would probably be excited about doing the split stay!
 

You should call member services. There is cash room inventory that they have access to that won't show up on the site.

Long story short is that I had to borrow points I didn't want to (I wanted to buy OTU points, but the CM couldn't perform the transaction for whatever reason). We changed our plans so I wanted to return the borrowed points to their original UY. In order to do that the CM had to cancel the reservation and re-book it. Even though there was no inventory showing up in the DVC site for the dates, she was still able to do it because she had access to the cash room inventory so she could cancel my reservation, return the points to their UY and then re-book the reservation using that inventory that she was only able to see.

So call up and ask. If the CM on the phone can't help you ask if a supervisor can call you back. They usually get back to you in 24-48 hours.
 
There MAY be cash room inventory - its actually highly unlikely that there is - it would be breakage inventory - rooms not booked for points that got turned over to CRO. Thats unlikely to have happened at the Grand Floridian. Other cash inventory belongs to Disney (those points were "used" in trades or they belong to Disney) and are not available to book on points.

But it is true that sometimes MS can see things we can't and that people cancel trips every day.
 
VGF is very small, so even stalking probably won't help. If it's a studio, incredibly unlikely.

If you wanted, say Poly, I would encourage stalking.

We've gotten a room "day OF" 4 days. We were at HHI with check out Thursday, needed to stay until Monday (long story), but they said that rooms become available "day of" sometimes-lucky for us, they did.
