My family of 4 is planning a Wonder cruise this fall. Since we are on a budget, I was advised by my TA to book a category 12 room. She indicated that the category 12 rooms sleep 3, not 4 and so we would be automatically upgraded to cat. 11 or 10 by DCL at the cat 12 price. Has anyone else heard of this?

Yes, this is true. The only difference between a cat. 12 and a cat. 11 is the location of the stateroom. A cat. 10 has the split bath. If you are lucky enough to get upgraded to a cat. 9 or 8 you will have a porthole.

Thanks, Ragdoll. I wonder, is it worth it to have the extra space in a category 10 (that's the most we can afford) compared to an 11 or 12? My husband and I will be traveling with our daughters, ages 5 and 7 so I know that we won't see the inside of that cabin much—perhaps only to sleep and bathe.

Size wise, the only difference between category 10 and 11/12 is that 10 has a split bathroom, toilet and sink in half and tub and sink in the other half. That way more than one person can get ready at once. Otherwise, the actually room space is the same.

Personally, I would go with the cat. 12. The money you save can be used for your other cruising expenses. Have fun!

Es, the cat 10 is 30 square feet larger than the cat 11. How much difference does that make for your family? Also cat 10 has a split bathroom, whereas the cat 11 doesn't. Again; how important is that for your family?

Only you can weight out these differences and if it is worth the extra price. Also a part of the the cat 10 are on decks the 11 aren't on (decks 1 and 2) and cat 11 is also available on deck 6, but no cat 10 on deck 6. If you want to be on a specific deck, this could also influence your choice.

I personally don't think the difference in size is enough to make me go to cat 10. The bathroom would be the thing (combined with the price difference) that would make me decide. I personally don't mind not having a split bathroom, but I can understand that with smaller kids some families find them really a nicer option. But than again, if the price difference is 'too much' (even if I could afford it), I would 'suck it up' and stick with the cat 11 and spend the money I'ld saved on an excursion or something to do on board.

Difficult to decide which stateroom is right, isn't it? I switched mine around 3 times before finally sticking with what I've got. I think. ;)

Also, since you will be getting an upgrade anyway to a 10 or 11, why not just book the category 12?

Will they let you book a room that only sleeps 3 when you are booking for 4 people? What if there aren't any upgrade rooms available, I don't want to rain on an upgrade parade, but if you aren't upgraded, there isn't enough room for all 4 of you to sleep.....

YAY! :woohoo:

i'm super excited about this considering i'm booking a cat. 12 room - it being just my niece and i, i didn't feel we needed anything too big or fancy ;) obviously, if a free-upgrade doesn't happen its no biggie...but, it would be cool.

I was thinking the same thing. Since you have to give the names of all members in your cabin, they will know how many is in your party so I don't think they will let you book a cabin that is not big enough for you, but maybe someone else knows for sure:confused3

I booked a cat 12 for the 8/21 3 night and just found out I have been upgraded to a cat 9.
So I am paying for a cat 12 but getting a cat 9. How awesome is that?

Thank you Upgrade Fairy! pixiedust:

DCL will upgrade you. They will not put a family of 4 into a category 12 cabin. I don't know why they give a cat 12 guarantee room to parties of 4 but for now, they do! Enjoy your cruise!!

if you re-booked a cat 11 while on-board what are the chances of getting an upgrade? or is it just the cat 12s that get upgrades? :confused:how do you if you have gotten an upgrade? :confused3

thanks!

All of the Cat 12's sleep 3 people. So if a family of 4 books a cat 12 gte, they will get upgraded at least to a cat 11. But if a family of 2 or 3 books a cat 12 gte cabin, they may end up in a cat 12.
Cat 11 cabins sleep 3 or 4 so if you book a cat 11 gte you may not get an upgrade. To check your cabin assignment you can log onto the Disneycruise website and view your reservation. When you are assigned a cabin it will show up. Our guarantee cabin # was assigned to us about 30 days before sailing.

:thanks: i will make sure to check 30 days before! and cross my fingers in the meantime for an upgrade :rotfl:

Another quick question......somewhat related.

I thought they only did upgrades on GTY rooms, but I read on here somewhere that even if you pick your room, they still may upgrade you. Is this true?

If they do this, do they take into consideration your preferred deck or area of the ship before upgrading?

Just wondering.

I have a question about upgrades. I am going on the Magic in December and already have my stateroom assigned to me. I booked a category 11 room through Costco travel. So, is it still possible that I might be upgraded and have a new room # assigned to me closer to departure??

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Sounds like letting DCL upgrade us from cat 12 to another category is the way to go. The savings pays for me to "swim with the dolphins" on Naussau!

goofieslonglostsis: I'm relieved to hear that I'm not the only one who finds the stateroom decision a difficult one to make!:) Enjoy your cruise!

Sort of related question: Do you get the 10% rebooking discount if you book a cat 12 while onboard the ship? Or is the 10% only for Cats 4-11?

The discount does not include a cat. 12. However, the price difference between a cat. 12 and a cat. 11 can be more than 10% when you book a cat. 12. And you will still have your $200 OBC. We have gotten great deals booking a cat. 12 and foregoing the 10% discount.
