automatic gratuities

I see there's an automatic gratuity added for parties of 6 or more. Since we have 4 kids we are a party of 6. We have the dp. How does that work? Do I have to pay the extra that the tip would be, or is tipping optional, and I can tip whatever I feel is worthy? (An example being if the service was bad or something, and I don;t feel the automatic 17% is required)

Not trying to start any kind of debate over tipping, just wondering how it works with the dp. I used to waitress, and I know tips are important. I just don't like the *automatic* thing.

With the DDP and a party of 6 or more, you will receive a bill for an 18% tip based on the menu cost of whatever you ordered, no exceptions. If you want that reduced, you will have to speak to a manager. The manager may reduce the tip if you had service issues. They will probably not reduce the tip just because a diner thinks the tip percentage is too high.
