When did Disney start adding an automatic 18% tip to a party of two using the Disney Dining Experience card? I can understand if it is a large party, but for two? That bugs me, we usually tip 20% but since they feel compelled to add 18% no matter what, that's what they get.

The DDE card changed terms from my understand effective 1/1/08

Yep they started months ago, plus partys of 6 or more added 18% not matter if you are paying cash, DDE, or DDP.

We don't have the card but are doing free dining in Sept. When I made our ADR's for 2 adults, 3 kids and a 9 month old, she said they will automatically add the tip, WTH??? Because the BABY makes it a party of six, he's not eating. Whatever! We, too, normally tip 20%, but they'll get what they get now.

We usually tip 20% too so it looks like we'll be saving 2% unless they go above and beyond, in which case we'll leave extra.

Any human at the table counts toward party size, even infants or anyone who doesn't intend to order.

As of 1/1/08, all DDE card parties regardless of size have an automatic 18% tip added. If I am one person and I order a beer at R&C, I get an 18% tip added. The only time is doesn't apply is at counter service restaurants that take DDE.

Why does it "bug" you? You are saving a little bit of money!:rotfl:

IT bugs people because tips should be earnt not automatic a good server gets 20% a bad server gets much less, why should the good server lose out.:rolleyes1

I'm not going to mention the DDE until we get the check. That way they won't know that their tip will be automatic.

If you have bad service, speak to a manager at the restaurant about reducing the tip amount. The managers should be made aware that they have service problems in the restaurant anyway.

And, you can always tip extra for good service if you wish.

There's no way they will know that you are planning to use DDE unless you tell them. There's no need to present the card until you pay the check.

I imagine they implemented this policy, so that tips would be calculated on the pre-discount amount to avoid inadventant under-tipping by those who are calculating the tip based on their final bill.

Every server asked this question specifically on our January trip prior to taking our order. They didn't just ask if we were on the dining plan, they also specifically asked if we had the DDE card. You'll either have to answer "yes" or just out and out lie.

We had intended to do the same thing you are planning but when faced with the direction question each time, we answered yes.

Weird. Last we went all they asked about was the dining plan. Darn. I guess then if we get really bad service we'll talk to a manger and have it adjusted. Oh well.

I have had four trips this year (two in January, one in February, one in March) and neither I nor anyone I ate with was asked if I was using a DDE card. They did ask if I was using a dining plan and I would say no.
