Auto Train Family Room question

If I book a family room will my family be able to access it as soon as we board? Do we also have assigned coach seats? Thanks.

Your seats will be in the room and you will access the room upon boarding. The Amtrak web site has diagrams of the room so you can get a better idea of what it's like.

Generally, when you go to dinner, your room's seats will be converted by the attendant to the sleeping berths. In the family bedroom, there are 4 berths. Two are adult size, and two are smaller children sized. I know that my older is getting close to aging out of the shorter berth. She's 7.
