auto mechanics - what's this?

I was wondering if there are any auto mechanics out there who could tell me what this thing is called. A friend took her car to a mechanic here in Mexico, and he said that she needs to replace this part. She is trying to find out if she can get it cheaper in the states (and have another friend bring it in), but we can't figure out what it's called in English.
Anybody happen to know?

I appreciate any help with this.

Not an auto mechanic, but it looks like a bearing to me. Do you know what part of the car it came off?

I'm not a mechanic, but did stay at a Holiday Inn Express recently, my guess is it is a wheel bearing.

It almost looks like a throw-out bearing for a clutch, as others posted, possibly a wheel bearing.

Yes. Definitely a wheel bearing. Also called a tapered roller bearing. You'll need the part number on the face of both parts. I recommend buying a Timken brand. (Yes that is who I work for!)

I just wanted to say thank you to you all. I think my friend was able to find what she was looking for, after I told her what it was that she was looking for (thanks to all of you). :thumbsup2
