Autisim Question

I have Autism it is minor but I still dont like many rides at WDW
Well I am going with my family on Spring Break and Im going to try new rides and was wondering if any that I'm going to try might freak me out.
I also am Not a strong swimmer and I dont like enclosed slides

What I am going to try

Soarin
Crush N Gusher
Great Movie Ride
Downhill Double Dipper
Snow Stormers
Storm Slides
Slush Gusher

Or any other water park rides since I have never been to those even though we have been to WDW at least 20 times in the past 4 years

We haven't done the water parks with the kids either, so I can't help you there.

My daughter with autism doesn't like any of the bumpy rides like Thunder Mountain or Dinosaur. She also doesn't like the fast spinning rides like the teacups or Primeval Whirl, but she likes the magic carpets.

I can tell you that Soarin is one of her most favorite rides. It isn't bumpy or rough and she likes the feeling of the air blowing on her. I hope you like it too.

My DS loves the sensory and likes the spinning tea cups, he is a thrill junky so we are on everything that makes him scream but he also loves Peter pan!

As a mother of an austic child (now 11) going to WDW since age 5. All of the rides that you have listed he loves. He does not have a problem with closed slides though, thus his experience in the water parks (both Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach) have been awesome. The only ride he has a problem with is the new one at Animal Kingdom Mount Everest, I think because it goes backwards and upside down) He loves Mission Space and Soarin and all the other rides. Favorite is space mountain. All I can say is to maybe try it and see how you feel... If you don't care for it, at least you can say you tried it right?. You'll have a great time what ever you go on. Take it slow and FEEL THE MAGIC.... Enjoy your trip.....

I think you are being very smart to get as much information as you can.

I don't know about the water park slides, but I can help with Soarin' and the Great Movie Ride.

I agree with the others about Soarin'. It is a very gentle ride. At the end, there are some fireworks on the screen, but the ride moves very gently and it is not enclosed or close feeling at all. Here is a review of Soarin' that might help you decide.

The Great Movie ride is a slow ride in a large tram. It is very open, so there is nothing enclosed. I don't know if you have any specific things like snakes that you don't like, but there are some scenes in that ride that have things like snakes, mummies, skeletons and an alien. If you want more specific information, let us know.

The only enclosed slides are Summit Plummet at BB (and you're only inside for less than five seconds and doing about 60mph at the exit) and Crush 'N Gusher in TL (which is a roller coaster type ride).

Good for you! I am a mom of an autistic boy and I know that it can be difficult sometimes for a person with autism to try new things.

One thing that I have learned is that you cannot lump all people with autism into one group when it comes to how they react to the WDW attractions. (Just like you can't do that to all the people not on the spectrum!)

Some are sensory-seeking (Like my DS-8), while others can be sensory-defensive.

It sounds like you have done a good job figuring out the aspects of certain rides that make you uncomfortable.

I can't offer any advice on water park attractions because we have never done the water parks, but, as previous posters have mentioned, your choices of Soarin' and the Great Movie Ride seem to be good ones!

Our family loves Soarin' and I hope you will love it, too! Have a wonderful trip!

You can still get a lot out of the water parks, even if you don't do any of the water slides! The creeks and wave pools in both parks are wonderfully relaxing (well OK, TL's waves, when they're on the big wave cycle might not be considered 'relaxing'), and the family raft ride and Teamboat Springs are good fun, without being 'too much' for most people.

As for other rides, you can get a bit of a feel for them by looking at the descriptions and pictures / videos of them on the webpage. Also the planning video might be helpful. I'd recommend avoiding Stitch, though, as you're harnessed in fairly tightly and there's lots of bits in the dark and noises behind you, etc.

If in doubt, read the warnings outside attractions, ask CMs and see what you think. Have a great time

He makes me as proud as it sounds like you make your mom! The only ride he really couldn't do was Soarin' was because he is deathly afraid of heights. Because of the manner in which the seats are raised, he knew he would be elevated above the floor regardless of which row he sat on. We had to get out before the ride started. He didn't care for Dinosaur at all because of the T-Rex. NOW...the thrill rides...that was a totally different ball game! He would ride those ALLLLLLL day long. I would encourage you to at least walk through the queue. When ds first faces a new ride, that's when he is able to work his bravery up! I commend you for trying to get informed before you go. It helps when we know a little bit of what to expect.

That is a very good idea.
All of the attractions have a way to get out before getting on.

For Soarin' you could go thru the line and see the little preshow movie. Some people decide they are too scared to go on, so they walk right thru the boarding area and wait for the rest of their party at the exit. That information is even on the preshow movie, so if you decided it was too much for you, you would not be the first person who had done that.

I have a son with high functioning autism (now 12) and we have done most of what Disney has to offer. Let me know what rides you did not like, and what experiences you did not like and we will let you know what other rides and attractions might be similar so you can make a well informed decision. I agree with the previous posters that there is no harm is looking first. You may find an attraction is not what you thought it was.

My daughter has Aspergers with extreme sensory sensativity issues. It is really hard to get her on any ride. I do believe she would adore Soarin though. ANything that makes her feel like she is flying would have points in her book. I love that one. IT is fun and fairly soothing. I do consider that I would not want her to be on the bottom row (row c) since seeing the bottom of the screen is a problem for me as well.

As far as Big Movie RIde goes. I t has some scary moments. It is not for everyone. It did bother me at moments. Mostly when the alien hangs out of the celling. I would not recomend this to someone with anxiety issues that would make them jumpy.

Hi, I don't know how old you are but I have two boys that love DW, one is more daring than the other but they both loved Soarin which I skipped actually because virtual reality rides make me nervous. We didn't go to any water parks though. Have a great time. Christine
