Aussie Disneyland Planners come on in and lets plan together :)

Well hello everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have found that noone can bloody understand a word we are saying and my DH says we sound like we are out of an episode of Cath and Kim :rotfl2:. We've never thought we spoke very "occa" but we can hear it over hear most definitely. Very scary. I'm trying to use a posh aussie accent but it's not working :lmao:

I remember trying to order a glass of Coke. I was like Coke, Coca-cola, cola and this guy kept shaking his head. In the end I asked for Pepsi, and he goes 'we have coke, not pepsi'.

Hi everyone,

Have been reading through all your responses, questions, etc and decided to join and say "hi".

Hubby and i are on our way to Anaheim in 3 weeks 2 days (not that we are counting). Just a quick get-a-way from work. We are really excited to be at Disneyland for Halloween.

A few things to say:

Jade+3 = i know exactly what you mean... We did the same thing. I found that normally if you ask for coke a cola, they understood. It did sometimes take a few attempts. But would get there in the end. I found even ordering water was a hassle

Queenie82 = again we get the same thing. i had an American argue with me that we were French (all of things). He was sure we were French.

As for shopping... Both hubby (yay) and I are very big shoppers. We have booked to go to an outlet mall somewhere near Palm Springs. Its called Desert Hills Premium Outlets. First time visit there, so fingers crossed it will be worthwhile.

Will check back later. :thumbsup2

Totally get it - I also used my proper Mary Poppins / Julie Andrews voice, that works well. They can understand that, but I have to think to use it. DH takes a big breath and does a best John Wayne accent. For some reason it comes 2nd-nature to him.

Ha we had such a problem with this and I tried to speak so slowly whilst in the US. When I was at our resort in Mexico (occupied with mostly yanks) I got out of the pool one day and said "ouch my feet are burning" due to the hot concrete and an American lady turned to me and said "It's 1/4 past two" I looked at her as if she had two heads and said "what?" dumbfounded that she could get it soooo wrong (and honestly over it by then) :rotfl2:

I also tried to have some fun with it during our stay and decided as we sounded like something from Croc Dundee, I was going to make it even more so and added heaps of "Crickey" & "Mate" to our sentences (internally laughing each time) even threw a few G'day's in (cringe worthy yes but I enjoyed it)

Hi Welley,
You are leaving the day before us (not that we are counting either :lmao: )

Ms Shuttergirl - glad to hear that you are having fun! I'm sure we all need to see some of your pics :)

For some reason we found our trip this year that it was soooo hard to be understood. In the past we've had them think we were English, New Zealander etc but this time they just could not understand us at all. One morning we were in the queue at Mcdonalds for our coffee fix on the walk to Disneyland and there was a guy ahead of us. I said to DD I bet he is another aussie I could just tell a mile away. When he placed his order and the guy asked for his name for the order he said "peter", excuse me sir? was the reply, "peter" he said again in aussie accent, "can you spell that? the guy asked, he started "p" "e" "t" "e" "r", still not getting it he gave him a piece of paper to write it, and the penny finally dropped, "OH PEEDER" was his reply. OMG it was too funny. We definately speak another language:rotfl2:

Ha ha, that's fantastic! It reminds me of a call I had to make to order some tickets. It was the most exhausting phone convo I had ever had. Literally spelling out every word and even then he didn't hear me right. I'm hoping it won't be so bad over there, otherwise I'm just gonna take over pen and paper and write everything down

hey Ms Shuttergirl, sounds like you are having a great time.

yes the accent is very funny. I didn't realise how bad I sounded, so I actually started using an American accent especially on the phone, because they would always spell my name wrong or not understand what I was saying.

On this topic, my wife asked for a serviette from one of the waiters, the guy looks all dumbfounded, she repeats it and then works out she should have said napkin. We then go grocery shopping and she buys some feminine hygiene products and on the label it says 10 serviettes !! :rotfl2: We could not stop laughing wondering what the waiter may have been thinking.

Oh, the ticker in my signature is the old one from this trip, it must just reset once you have been on your trip. I feel bad taking it off as I don't have a trip planned. I figure if I leave it maybe a trip will appear :sad2: Or rather the money for another trip will appear.

Hey Ms. Shuttergirl :wave2: Glad to hear you are having a good time. Hope your DS gets his happy back.

Marvel, that is soooooooo funny about the serviettes. Can you imagine what that poor waiter was thinking :lmao:

I really should take note of that actually because serviette is a word I always use, I never say napkin. Actually come to think of it in Aus on feminine hygeine products it says napkins :rotfl:

xxx

:rotfl2:Marvel, that is way to funny... you forget that you need to order certain things almost using a different language. But that is very amusing.

Question: Has anyone done or is thinking about the segway tour at DLCA? Hubby and I are looking into it.

Oh I'm going to have to remember that one!
The one I get caught by is the whole thong/flip flop one. I was once at a pool and said to myself - darn it where is my other thong - I got a strange look from a lady nearby who promptly left the area.:rotfl2:

sigh

Welly - Yes I'm planning on doing the Segway tour in DCA. I think it sounds fantastic. I LOVE DCA and getting to go around before it opens sounds awesome!:thumbsup2
I'm also doing the World Showcase segway one at Epcot and the Fort Wilderness segway one.

In booking remember there is a 20% AAA discount. There is a debate as to whether it has to be booked through the AAA or if they will accept it over the phone (and you show it on arrival). If you have to do it through the AAA I'm not sure if we can do that???
They don't take bookings until a month in advance so we haven't tried. The WDW ones we booked through Member services of DVC to get our DVC discount.

I told my MIL and it was the best belly laugh she's had in a while!

My son asked for a coke spider at Millies. The waitress said. oh, you're from Australia. They'd had someone in the week before asking for the same thing. It's called a coke float over there. My kids love asking for cotton candy instead of fairy floss.

hey queenie, are you a DVC member? or do you buy the points of members to stay there? I was wondering whether that works out well. Our next trip will have to be WDW, and I am actually considering staying offsite given the prices of the deluxes at WDW. But maybe renting DVC points is a good idea?

We own.....we have a condition known as Addonitis...but have not yet stayed
We got a small OKW resale first, then a small BWV resale, then when we stopped into LA for a couple days at the start of the year we bought VGC, AKV and BLT.

We will for the very first time be staying on site this up coming trip. So I can't yet say our actual experience. We have never stayed on site ever. We used to stay at motel suites. But we really prefer to stay in apartments - even if they are only studios. (yes in the US even a studio can take 4 adults. It is an Australian phenomenon where you need to get a 2bedroom to take 4 adults.)

We have always wanted to stay onsite but due to cost we have been kept away. There have been very good specials for the value resorts lately and so on but DVC in the long term really is good value.

We are doing split stays to try things out and I am REALLY looking forward to it.
See my sig to see which places we are staying at. Plus one night at BCV to get to try out Stormalong Bay. And then we are staying at VGC when we get to Disneyland.

I do recommend renting points if you do want to stay in more than a moderate and are in a financial position to consider buying into DVC. For example in value season you can rent points for OKW at about $8-$10 a point. You need 8 points to stay in a studio per night during the week.

If you have the time I would highly recommend doing a DVC tour. If only for the information. It really is interesting.

Yeah, the sis & I are planning on doing the tour. Can't wait to hear some feedback about how and even whether the RACV card (which does have the AAA logo on the back) will give us the discounted price. I am a little dubious about whether it will work. I know in theory they should accept it, but you never know. Also, for those going to Knotts, the AAA discount give you something like 30% off the regular admission price. Again, I'm hoping they'll accept the card.

I have used our RACQ card at Goofy's Kitchen. I told the girl it was the same as AAA and showed her the logo on the back. She rang up the discount no problems.
