My 2c - So much of negative travel jealousy is based upon what people have done, or where they can't go, financially in particular. For example, this is a conversation I overheard at work not too long ago. We're in Sydney.

Person 1: "Booked 2 weeks up the Gold Coast at Christmas..."
Person 2: "Again? No mate, we go down the south Coast at Christmas, heaps better, and cheaper. Why go so far?"

Likewise, "I can never go so I wish you couldn't go either," or "I go to Europe every two years, you're not as good as me as you go to the USA and I go to Europe."

Good travel jealousy is for me a friend is in New York at the moment and I wish it was me. And I know I'll be going soon.

The trouble is , my wifes family were so offended ( or jealous ) that we didn't travel in Oz , they all refused to ask about it or even discuss it !
They even changed the subject whenever one of my sons wanted to talk about breakfast at Goofy's kitchen or Fantsamic !

We have kept this trip pretty much to ourselves and only told a few select people . Why can't people be supportive and just be happy for us ?

Oh Plumbob, that is so sad! I can't believe that your wife's family are being so mean!! FWIW I think it's FANTASTIC that you are going again this year

We bought my brother- in- laws kids some really nice Disney things ( Mickey mouse lolly pops , princess dolls , Lego jelly moulds ect ) and still we were NOT supposed to bring the subject up and when we did , everyone would go reallllllll quiet and no talk

BUT ! When he talked about his recent trip to Tassie ..... you could not shut the guy up !
I really think its a jealousy thing - we are not rich by any means , we just choose to save , forgo other things so we can get back to Disneyland whenever we can.
Most people can save ( it might take a while ) but most choose not to and then get all green eyed when they hear we are off.
Watch out all you Aussie's , if you get bitten by the Disney bug , its a very expensive hobby you will NEVER go just once

I'm having a similar issue here The trip is ALL I talk about and because we leave Aus in 19 more sleeps ( ) my FIL keeps saying "Oh, I can't wait unitil it's all done". Then he'll make remarks like :

"You wouldn't catch me traveeling in Yankee land"

"I'd spend my money in Australia and see that before I went elsewhere"

I think he's just jealous Hubby and I want to do overseas before we do Oz and Oz is for when we retire

We have received our taxes back and are all set to go now

All we have to do is convert to one of those cash passport (or similar) thingys and we are jet setting

I am packed, passported, ticketed and soooooooooooo excited!!!!!!!!!!

It is lovely to be able to come in here and be excited with everyone and know that everyone is excited for me

Wow I only had this type of conversation with someone today. They couldn't see why on earth anyone would want to go to America, let alone again etc.

My DH and I generally have a OS trip 2 to 3 times a year and we get people raising their eyebrows, as if to say "aren't you so lucky" I then counter that with but we don't have kids, so we can do this. I don't know why I say this, I just feel guilty and I suppose I try to make them feel better as to why they don't.

This will be our second trip to the U.S but this time we will be having a week in the Carribean - Mexico, so I find I keep saying we are going to Mexico instead of saying we are going to the states. When I do say happily "I'm going to Disneyland" they ask why? Well why not? Then I get the "but it's for kids"


Oh well each to their own. If camping on the foreshore every year is your ideal holiday, then good for you but don't make me feel like a leper for travelling and doing what we enjoy.

Good for you Kel77, when I'm only 19 sleeps away I'll be incapable of putting two words together , I'll be so excited

I think you are really wise to plan your Oz trips for later on. My parents have always enjoyed travel but they've reached the stage of their lives where long plane trips are just too much for them so they have no choice but to travel within 3 hours flights from home. I'm just so glad they did their long trips years ago otherwise they'd have a lot of regrets now.

Oh my god. Cannot believe that we all have very similiar likes and very similar issues. This is our 5th trip to the US and third with kids. We did 7 weeks last year doing NY, Florida, Vegas and Hawaii and did'nt think about going back until 2011 or so, but again the airfares lured us in. The funny thing is, we haven't told anyone this time at all, except for two sisters in law that understand. We just cannot handle the looks and questions as to why again.

I think we all have to form a travel club where we can discuss our trips, and bag all the negative friends and rellies

Andona, that is trip we want to do next time, NY, Niagara, and Maine. That's the next trip!! Always planning the next trip.

We plan to Europe etc when we get old and the kids will actually want to see old buildings! And maybe when our dollars gets some respect against the Euro. Which may never happen.

People like to bag the USA when it gets popular in the media to do so, and I really have no patience in my own circle of friends and family when they do it without having ever been there. They will talk about the food being crap or the people being loud, when they haven't spent a single day there. To us it is really the most wonderful place, and we dream of being able to spend a few years there one day, and get to see as much of it as possible.

Until that magical day, or at least until the powerball numbers come up, we will have to survive on our trips! Two weeks or two months, still great.

We have been to the gold coast numerous times and the last time was in March as we didn't plan to travel anywhere else, I vowed after that to not spend anymore money on those trips, where you still can drop $4000 or $5000. Instead, save up for another US trip.

It is very hard though, when you cannot enjoy the planning with those around you, or when you come back and they don't want to ask about your trip cause they are jealous. Especially when often they have truckloads more money than we do, but just don't want to spend it on travel. Like that's our fault.

People saying that 2 1/2 weeks isn't long enough clearly don't go away annually or they have unlimited leave or something. 3 weeks is using up all our leave!

However we still like a few weeks camping on the foreshore at Christmas. I like both

My DS let it slip to a few months ago about Disneyland, he said to his granny, we're going to Mickey's Mouse' house and she rolled her eyes and looked at me and said to him "I think you mean Disneyland".
She then turned to me and I said "yeah, we're going to Disneyland, we're taking Liam before he starts school" and she just gets this really exasperated look on her face, like I was feeding him to a litter of lions cubs, didn't you know that Disneyland is a punishment?? LOL

My DS is so excited to be going, it was a childhood dream of mine that never eventuated as a child, but I always said to my now DH i'm taking my kids to Disneyland, and as we only have one child, i'll have to take any more that come along as well

We returned from our first DL trip (mine and DD12) (DH's 6th though) and I felt like "I'll be right for the next 2 years. 2 days after our return "I was like I'm ready to go again so starting to plan a trip for next year hopefully!!!!

DL is just amazing!!!!

We talk about going back all the time, hopefully next year

That is a lesson that I've learned too. We took our daughter and son on a trip to the UK and Paris a few years ago. She was 17 then and absolutely loved it - she was studying History and is an English literature fan so it was right up her alley.

However, our ( then) 9 year old son had an OK time but he spent every visit to the various Cathedrals sitting on a bench with his head in a book or a Nintendo! We found some things that appealed to him but, generally, he was just too young to get as much out of that trip as he has out of our USA trips.

The things that we want to see in the USA are often the things that will also interest him. There are so many places that you can relate back to a movie that they saw and enjoyed - all the Disney ones of course but even when we went to New York he got a kick out of seeing The Brooklyn Bridge because Godzilla died there, and he's looking forward to Mt Rushmore after seeing National Treasure 2.

And there isn't much that appeals to a kid more than Disney + a swimming pool

And if the kids are happy - Mum and Dad are happy

Being homeschoolers I make sure we study the places we go before we go there. The connections the kids make when we are there make it much more exciting for them. So at the moment we are learning about the Mayflower and the Wampanoags at Plymouth so that we can go to Plimouth Plantation and the Mayflower 2. C is really excited to go to the Met because he has read about Juan de Pareja, and his portrait is at the Met.

With the Character Meals, do you have to ring up to make a reservation or can you book online? I found the phone number but I'd rather do it online if I could.

I'm thinking about doing the Lilo and Stitch breakfast at PCH Grill, but I'm not sure if it would look weird for an adult to go alone?

I think you have to call to make reservations. I always got such a kick out of calling and hearing the 'Thank you for calling Disneyland Resort', that it was worth the couple of dollars to call (yes, I'm quite possibly more excited than my kids).

I don't think it would be weird to go alone at all. We're considering the Lilo and Stitch breakfast too, as DD3 is obsessed with Daisy Duck and that seems to be the only place to find her.

I am a little bit excited this afternoon. I just bought my Disney tickets. I got 3 x 14 day Disneyland vacation passes, 3 x 2 day Universal studios tickets & 3 x LA shopping tour tickets, all for the grand total of $1058. I am very happy with that.
