Aulani Transient Fee

Long story short - for 2011 - 1 BR O/V - the Hawaii transient tax was around +/- $8.00 per night.

This answer took me 30 minutes and two phone calls to member services to confirm. All I was looking for was an order of magnitude - was it $10/night, $50/night, or $150/night - it should not have taken that long on the phone to get me to the answer that it's going to be around $40 for four nights.

This, imo, is why the dues issue with Aulani is such a big deal to the State of Hawaii. They get a piece of this, so the higher the dues, the bigger the piece of the pie. When you're talking hundreds of thousands of points, even .50 really adds up quickly.

Yes, it is a big deal. You should check out the TUG boards. there are real issues with the county of Maui raising the assessments on timeshares there and the increase in yearly dues and the transient tax assessments. I think it has been resolved, but I'm sure it will be an issue every year because the homeowners pay very little property tax, and instead tax the timeshare owners/tourists like crazy to pay for government services.

Are you sure that the tax rate on timeshares is 9.25%? The tax rate was initially set at 7.25% and there were proposals in the Hawaii legislature to raise it to 9.25%. However, the Hawaii legislature adjourned in May 2011 without changing the tax rate via HB 809.

By the way, the transient accommodations tax for rental homes other than timeshares is set at 9.25%. One of the reasons HB 809 was being considered by the legislature was to standardize the tax rate for all types of vacation homes.

OK so the raise may have not gone through as I thought to 9.25 but stayed at 7.25 LOL so we save a few pennies!

I heard from another member staying there last week that he had to go to valet and show his DVC card (sorry renters!) in order to have them stamp his ticket.

Correct. I stayed on points. Each time I exited, I showed my members card, and got the free validation on my parking lot ticket at the valet desk.

I am a Hawaii resident, and we stayed Saturday to Sunday in a studio, using my points.

Hawaii Transient Tax was $2.97 total. I was expecting it to be around $10 according to a form on the Hawaii State Tax Dept's website.

Here's my 2 cents on the membership dues situation.

The local news reported that DVC will have to re-work the annual dues/maintenance fees, and it then goes to the State Tax Department for review and approval.

I read "in between the lines" that there will be lots of attorneys involved, meetings and likely public hearings before anything is approved. I'm sure it will be a costly procedure for Disney, and I would guess they will incure some sort of fine or penalty by the state.

Don't expect anything soon.

For those who bought in before the problem was announced in August, DVC will honor the signed contract on the dues, and not the eventual higher rate.

If the Hawaii Transient Fee is based on the mx fee for the points used for the room, what happens to the members who purchased right away and have lower mx fees.

It would go to reason that since they are paying a lower mx fee, the Hawaii Transient Fee would also be lower.
