The simple answer is yes, Photopass at Aulani is exactly like WDW or DL resorts.
HOWEVER...They Aulani system is on a different server than the parks server.
I had issues with my online pre-ordered CD that I used for
Disneyland in early September, and Aulani stay in mid-September. My parks photos loaded to my account. My Aulani photos did not.
I had to call to Photopass Customer Service. They asked me to describe a few of my photos, including what date, approximate time, location at Aulani, and what we were wearing.
It helped that they could reference my Disneyland photos, to see what I looked like. After several minutes, they located one set of pictures. Because they found one, they could then link all the other pictures on the same card.
Using multiple Aulani cards would take even longer for them to find all your pictures.
I did ask if I should load them onto a Disneyland or WDW Photopass card, and they said no, it would not link due to the servers being different. Therefore the scan on the back of the Photopass card are specific to where you were given the card (WDW, DL, or Aulani).
One other issue I had... We dined at the Character Breakfast at Aulani. The morning we checked in at the restaurant, we took our photo with Mickey Mouse. But because this is an "event", they do not add it to your Photopass card. Directions given to you once you purchase the photos, says to add the "event" number printed on the back of our photo. Well, that day, they didn't print the code on the back of the photo. The Cast Members do not scan your Photopass card, as they would at Hoop Dee Doo Review or at Cinderella's Royal Table.
Twice I've gone back to Aulani (we live nearby) to straighten this out. The Cast Member added the Character Breakfast photos to an Aulani Photopass card both times. I enter these numbers into my account, but again no photos appeared.
I had to call Photopass Customer Service to explain everything again, and then wait as they looked for the pictures I described. Once they found them, they added them to my account.
It's very time consuming to sit on hold, but once they find your pictures they'll add them to your account.
I also emailed the problem to Customer Service, and they sent an automated response. No one ever got back to me. So always call and get a Cast Member to speak to.
It's been a month and a half since Aulani opened, and the Photopass Cast Members at the resort have told me lots of guests have complained about this issue. They're answer is "we're working on fixing the problem."
Finally, if you purchase the CD at the Aulani Resort, you won't have this problem, because they can pull up all your photos on the screen, and you see them before they burn the disc. Anything that's missing, they'll seach for them on the spot.
