Aulani - Live Report!!

Thanks for the good health wishes.

I'm having a bout of sciatica that I don't seem able to shake. It's a pain in he butt. Pun intended.

Today is all about shuttling people from the airport to Aulani. I now have skills for a back- up job if anything happens

We are being told that we should expect delays anywhere we go in the next few days. All of the world leaders are meeting in Hawaii and there is even an event at Aulani. It's been recommended that we leave four hours to get to the airport on our departure day. Fun huh?:scared1::scared1:

Alulani is even more beautiful than it was when we were here in July. It's truly a gorgeous resort.

So far, we have had a snack, passed out watching Modern Family, had breakfast and now we are posing as the Super Shuttle.

We have dinner reservations at AMA AMA tonight. Looking forward to that!

More later.

My father has been in the hospital for 4 days now because of the sciatica. He cannot take a step without debilitating pain. We had to call an ambulance to even get him to the hospital.

That sciatica can be wicked.

You have sciatica? Oi! I'm sorry to hear that. I ended up having to have back surgery to cure mine! I hope yours is better soon!

Sayhello

Kevin and John: so glad to here you got there ok. The resort looks beautiful. Can't wait to go there. The picture from your room is fantastic. Please take care of each other and have a wonderful trip.

John

Sorry to hear about your nerve pain issues. At first I thought you could try out the spa and get a good massage, but not sure that would be helpful for a nerve issues. Hope you feel better fast!

I was just on Google Maps today looking up the Aulani, and they have it placed wrong--it looks like it's in a neighborhood north of the ocean. I thought at first, "it's not even on the ocean?" But I checked Disney's resort map and then saw the empty resort area on Google and thought, "There it is." I checked rates (as though I could actually go any time, soon), and early Jan was around $350/night which, relatively, isn't too bad. I spend my free time planning fake vacations--it helps when you want to go everywhere and have the funds for one hotel trip a year (This year it's Disneyland :yay:).

Kevin, that really too bad about your back. There is no escape from back pain, and few pain killers will do the job (and leave you conscious). Good luck. Get in the shower and let that hot water sooth is out.

And four hours to the airport?? You could almost walk to it in that amount of time. Good luck, guys. Thanks for the updates.

I wonder if sitting on the plane for a long time aggravated your nerve. Best wishes Kevin. Hope it passes soon.

So sorry to hear about Kevin's back. Hope it eases so he can enjoy himself. Just having suffered a fracture of one of the vertebra in my back, I can appreciate the pain. I'm, still out of work from it, looks like I won't be going back til mid-Dec. Try to have fun anyway.

Aulani is really more beautiful than I could find words to describe. Everyone is very friendly and I am enjoying my FREE WIFI at 4:30 am...darn time change!!

One complaint so far -- out of vinylmations and Dooney's!!!:scared1:

Looks like here's the event at Aulani. Could someone ask them to donate to the Power of 10 too?!? :confused3

Honolulu Star-Advertiser: Obama Fundraiser at Disney's Aulani

President Barack Obama is expected to appear at a fundraiser for his re-election campaign at Disney's Aulani Resort & Spa at Ko Olina on Nov. 14, sources say.

A 9 a.m. brunch for as many as 300 people is being planned.

Obama will be in Hawaii next week for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference.

Wow, beautiful view! I've never thought about visiting Hawaii before, but then I never thought about Paris either and look where you've led me! Hope the soothing ocean breezes help ease the pain, Kevin, and that you recover quickly!

Ok...knock on really beautiful Hawaiian Koa wood....the sciatica pain seems to be much less today. Maybe it's going away. Please go away!

Had dinner with our entire group last night at Ama Ama. This is the signature restaurant at Aulani.

The setting of the resturant is beautiful, but you know it's not good when the nice thing I have to say is that it's a pretty place.

The service was adequate. Another bad sign......

The menu is beyond pretentious and the food mediocre at best....downright dreadful at worst. How do you screw up tomato and mozzarella salad? They found a way, bless their hearts.

And the prices are even ore pretentious than the food.

So far, eating at Aulani has proven to be ridiculously over priced....which is bad enough....but add to that the fact that the food isn't great and you have a bad combinations.

It also seems that the waitstaff in each dining establishment are surprised that there are actually people in the restaurants.

More to come.

I thought we set them up for failure since we ate at Alan Wong's the night before, a signature restaurant in Honolulu, but our overall experience at Ama Ama was just horrible. Although the prices are still high for lunch, our experience was a little better.

The view was nice.

Ugh! I feel for you. That's how I spent the first several days of our ABD trip, if you remember. Hope it continues to get better. Have a great time!

Alan Wong's is arguably the best restaurant on Oahu. We ate there in August, and will be eating there again next Thursday.

Beautiful view! I'm going to have to start looking at flights to HI. I wonder what season is best/cheapest (probably two different things).

We went to Maui in May and several of the locals told us that it was a slow time of year. Summer is busy as well as whale season (can't remember when that is but I'm thinking Feb-Apr)

ENJOY Aulani everyone!

The Whale season is December to late April/early May. (Although I've heard it's been starting earlier & ending later lately). Peak whale season is February/March. I've been told the best weather is May and September/October. Which is not when most people go. Most people either go when the weather is awful where they live, or when school is out, not when the weather is good in Hawaii.

Thanks for the info. Whale season isn't important to us since we live on the coast and can go whale watching any time we want.

Well, yes, but it *is* important in that Hawaii is busy during whale season! So it can be a good time to avoid!
