Have we standardized on an Aulani acronym yet? I would like to update my ROFR thread and I guess I am not sure what to use for Aulani.

My first thoughts would be AV for Aulani Villas. But maybe AKO for Aulani Ko Olina?

Anyways, I would like to use whatever "we" The DIS decide to standardize on.

I have seen on some ppl's sig a gif w a hibiscus and the acronym AHV.

The disboard Resort Availability board is using ARS as the acronym for Aulani. I don't particularly care for ARS - reminds me of the acronym for the teletype machine we had in the office back in the 1970s.

By the way: The Hawaiian alphabet has only 12 letters: 5 vowels (A, E, I, O, U) and 7 consonants (H, K, L, M, N, P, W).

Yep, and one of my favorite random facts about Hawaii is that the language was voted upon by non-natives to establish those letters! If you look at the Wikipedia article under "Orthography (writing-system)" "Origins", it mentions briefly that in 1826 the 'developers' decided having the other 5 consonants that used to be in the language were too pesky so they held a state-wide vote to figure out what the alphabet should be! :rotfl: This trivia tickles my funny bone, so I thought I'd share it.

When it comes to the Availability app you can blame me for going with ARS. I wasn't entirely happy with it but I didn't like AHV either because it's too similar to AKV. ARS was chosen because Disney refers to the entire resort as Aulani Resort and Spa.

But wouldn't Aulani Resort & Spa refer to the whole complex (hotel + villas) and not exclusively the DVC villas?

That is correct. On their websites Disney refers to the DVC part of the resort as "Aulani, Disney Vacation Club Villas, Ko Olina, Hawai`i". Based on that, a possible acronym might be AVK (Aulani Villas Ko Olina) but that doesn't work well for the Availability app since it's so similar to AKV. It would be very easy for a user to mistype it and enter AKV instead. Even AHV is similar enough to result in a possible typo and invalid data. So we went with ARS since it was as different from AKV as possible, yet still tied to the name of the resort.

The Availability app is a special case so the acronym used elsewhere on the boards can be whatever people find easiest to remember. So far most people just type out Aulani in their posts. It's possible that this will be the first DVC resort where people just refer to it by its name! I would have gone with Aulani in the Availability app but everything in the program is geared to the use of a 3-letter acronym and it would have been a lot of work to change it, especially as we hope to retire the application once DVC launches online booking, rumored to be coming within the next 12 months.

Since most people just use Aulani why not use AUL as the abbreviation? It's definitely different than any other resort's three letter code.

I was just about to edit my post to mention that. I considered using that in the Availability app as well since most people just type out Aulani in their posts.

I completely understand your reasoning. Thanks for responding to my question. I'm curious, do people mistype or confuse BCV and BWV?

I don't think so. I was mostly concerned with AKV and AVK since it would be easy to reverse the letters when typing (like typing teh when you meant to type the). When reading a post AHV looks similar to AKV if my eyes are tired, but the Availability app would not have that problem!

Great discussion! I like the AUL idea, so I think that I will use that for the ROFR thread.
