So my family and I are October DL vets but with the increasing Oct crowds we are going to change things up. Last year during all of my trip planning I read on here that the end of August crowds were low since most schools are back in session. We don't start until 9/9! I'm looking at flying down on 8/22 or 8/29. What week would be best to avoid crowds? I saw that the half marathon festivities start 9/3 plus that's the holiday weekend so I'm thinking the earlier week would be better to avoid all of that. Is there anything big happening the week of 8/22? Are most school back by then?

Here's a little info our us and our plan - me, dh, ds 6, & dd 11. Tentative idea is fly into Burbank on a Sat, go to Universal on Sun all day, get transportation to Anaheim Sun night, go to DL Mon & Tues, Wed relax, then DL Thurs, Fri, & Sat, then fly home from Orange County.

I'm sure some of the DL experts will chime in, but we are planning the earlier week for the reasons you mention :)

I'm hoping others chime in here. There must be someone that has an opinion on this :earsboy: Anyone????

We're planning on the same week, only thing that we made sure of was to include a weekend to make sure we got to see F!.

We have done many mid, late aug and early sept in the last few years. After about the 16th of aug the park does calm down and the crowds are like 4 most days except weekends. The Begining of sept to mid sept is also very calm, the crowd level is about a 2 during the weeks then. But this was suppose to be a secret so we can continue to enjoy the calm, since school here does not start until about the 29th or so of aug, and if we miss the first day or two it does not matter since she has gone to the same private school for six years now, my niece know who her teacher will be, and the first few days are not a lot going on. But next year starts are big problem, no more taking a week off, starting this year the fifth graders have to follow the school district policy even though we are private. Because to many left and complained to school district that they never had to turn in homework on time in our school, just as long as you turn it i . So the school made the change to make 5th to 12th grade follow school district policy.

Last year when I was planning our Oct trip I saw some people mention the lower crowds starting mid Aug, then after the very busy days we encountered in Oct we decided to switch our annual trip. I remember several years ago when we went in Oct that most rides were just a 20 min wait or less and if it happened to be longer than that we would just check back later on in the day. Luckily our school district doesn't start until after Labor Day so we can take advantage of going in Aug when most others are back in school! Plus we don't need to pull our kids out of school to go in Oct.

You are correct, most ca schools have started by then, except for a small few. Most ap restrictions are lifted by that time as well as Disney assumes summer crowds are starting to thin. I think either week would be fine. Nif you switched from o the later week, I'd get rid of the lazy Wednesday so you're not at the parks too much on the holiday weekend.

The more I looked into the later week the less I liked it. The lazy Wed is a must for DH so have to leave that in there. Plus with the marathon expo on Thurs then Labor Day wknd I don't think that would be the best way to end our trip. Although any given day at DL is wonderful imo but just want to make it the best possible day!

Another strike against the later week is that Haunted Mansion and Space Mountain might be getting their Halloween overlays around that time, so may not be available to ride. I seem to remember it being that time of year. I tentatively have a trip planned Aug 21-24 to take advantage of the lower crowds as well. We are in NorCal and school doesn't start again until the 26th.

That's right, another good point!
