can anyone tell me what late august is like - crowd-wise?
hoping for good news!

I don't know, but I'll be there. (Me, my mom and my DD), so that's 3! :rotfl:

It's pretty crowded in the beginning of the month, but crowds begin to thin out as the month progresses and kids head back to school. The later in the month, the better, IMO.

Hi,

As with any question about crowds, you are likely to get the following two posts among your replies:

Post 1: We went at that time last year and the crowds were great! We walked onto everything!

Post 2: We went at that time last year and we will never do that again! The crowds were horrible!

But...the bottom line is...late August crowds are quite manageable.

We have found it to be a good time to go becasue we have to work around our kids school schedules. It is VERY HOT!!! The crowds were manageble. Early mornings were great, started to fill up as the day went on.

It is not too bad, But it is very very hot! So remember your hats and fans!:)

I am one of those posters that will give you the good, the bad and the ugly. Sorry but I think you should be informed and not just told that you will be ok. Ok with that said my family and two other familes went Aug 12-18. It was so hot i had to change clothes twice a day. i sweat in places i didnt know i could sweat in. Yes I know TMI:scared1: . anyway the crouds were horrible. I didnt know where all of those people came from. People were hot, crouded and rude. Our first trip was in sept and we didnt not wait in line for anything. So yes we were spoiled.

Anyway yes plan each day where to go. Be there at rope drop. And plan breaks in the day to cool off. We had fans and mister fans and still thought I would die. And I am fron texas where it is hot all the time. I just think i am not in the heat all day like you are at disney.

But like other posters have said. What may bother me may not bother you. Crouds may seem not busy to you but horrible to me. Kinda like do you see the glass half empty or half full. i wish you luck on your visit. and hope i have not upset you in anyway, just wanted to let you know. Maybe the end of the month will be better for crouds than in the beginning of the middle of the month.

I for one will not go in august ever!!

I went years ago in August when I was in my early twenties for a friend's wedding. It was Sooooo hot & humid, we had to dip our hands in ice water to set the nail polish for the wedding. We also had a hurricane blow through but amazingly, Disney was up and beautiful, the very next day! Ok, as for touring.....honestly, the crowds weren't bad in late August. But it was HOT and we absolutely made sure to take in some shows during the heat of the day to rest and refresh. I really enjoyed hopping on the steamboat at MK w/ a cool drink. It was wonderful. I think you'll be fine. Early morning is great. I wouldn't want to be poolside mid day...too much direct sun for this gal. I sought out the shows or made TS for late lunches. We did the pools in the evening. Yes, the ehat makes some people more grouchy, but I just let them bounce off me and continue on my way. Was it my ideal time to visit??? no. But it wasn't horrible either.

GoofyTraci and I have had this "argument" before!!!;)

My trip report from almost the EXACT SAME TIME that she was there (August 16-20, 2007) is here:

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1557573

and we were very pleased at the lack of crowds, as we are every time we go in August.

Am I right and GoofyTraci is wrong? No.

Is GoofyTraci right and I'm wrong? No.

To paraphrase what she said in her post above, "crowds are in the eye of the beholder!" And that's pretty much what I meant in my original post above.

The crowds won't kill you....but the heat & humidity will...:crazy2: Last august was the worst for us and I ended up back in the room more than I ever have during other trips.

But...we'll be back again this year! :)

Crowd questions are so subjective....so many people ask the same question and like others have said you will get varying answers.

If you are going to be there ANYHOW..... then the size of the crowds won't change your mind.

Go and have a good time! :)

Jill

We went in early August back in 2003. The crowds were not that bad. The hot, humid weather is what I remember the most!!

We picked August 15-30 for our trip. I believe the Florida and Georgia schools start back on the 18th. We plan to go only during the weekdays. Weekends will be spent by the pool, mini golf, relaxing, etc

I agree that you will get a mix of answers. I went last year starting Aug. 26th which was the 1st day of free dining. DH and I were thrilled at what we thought were very empty parks while I read some threads on here where people were horrified by the crowds who were there the exact same week. I can only go on school vacations since I'm a teacher and compared to the spring break/ President's week, June crowds, I think it is much quieter. If you typically go during Sept. or Jan., maybe it would seem busy.
So, my answer, I'm agreeing with those who say that the crowd is in the eye of the beholder. Do make sure you are prepared for the heat though! Much more of a challenge than crowds IMO.

I was amazed too when I read the boards after my Aug 26-Sept 1 trip last year. I didn't think it was too crowded at all except for the studios on the 27th. Some people were saying how crowded it was. It is definitely all subjective. I had planned on going back in May 2010 but then when I thought about it I felt that the first week in May 2006 was more crowded than the last week of August 2007. So, I'm planning for August 2010 now. So far away but planning is so much fun.

Funny you should mention the studios as we went there on the 30th and it was the only day we didn't get a ton done. We gave up after lunch and came back the next day and were fine. I know it was evening EMH for the studios which I think was part of the problem. Interesting.....

The metro Atlanta schools usually start fairly early in the month...I'd say the second full week is typical. We go back Aug 11. A lot of FL schools used to start the first week but now have been pushed back because of some law that was passed. I can't remember the details but know my friends in FL who used to start before us now start after.

I avoid going outside in Atlanta in July and August except to be at the pool, so I can not fathom going to WDW at that time. But that is me...some people can handle it. I'd say the crowds are better the later in the month you go but I do not have personal experience.
