August 16, 2011 – 7 Night Alaska Sailing

Thanks for the info! I had to check with DH's sister to see if she and her husband wanted to do this with us and they do! They live in Seattle and love it there. I describe Seattle as being "unfit for human habitation" only because I can't stand all the rain. It's rained every time I've been there. I love the city, just not the weather. DH and I LOVE Segway tours though. We have done them all over the country (including one in Anchorage the last time we cruised Alaska). I'm a little worried about the steep grades in Seattle because I'm not quite as fond of hills on Segways as I am flat ground, but we're looking forward to it. We're flying in on the 12th and are trying for a tour on the 13th.

Yay! We got the tour for 4 of us at 5:30 on the 13th. Really looking forward to it!

We'll be at Sunday's game! We're getting in on Saturday afternoon and going to do a few touristy things, then Sunday the ball game. My nephew has already requested "getting there when the ball park opens" so he can try to get a few Red Sox autographs. We're Cub fans, and we like Boston too --- they give us hope.:lmao:

We're taking the Cascades train up after the game.

I think that's a great idea--unfortunately, we won't be there because we have relatives in Richmond whom we are visiting before the cruise. It sounds like a lot of cruisers will, however. Eat a hot dog for us!

(My dad is also a Cubs fan--he's from a tiny little town south of Chicago called Rossville.)

Note about the Cascades, for those heading to the ball park:

You might want to call the station and see how early you can check your bags, or if there's luggage storage--it's an easy walk to the stadium from the train station, and an easy walk back afterwards, if you aren't hauling luggage.

Thanks so much for all the help you have been to everyone. I have some more questions for you. We are going to be in Seattle for 1 night only. We are arriving on Aug. 13 around 12:30pm. Our only plans right now are Pike Place Market and a 5:30 reservation for dinner at the Space Needle. I'm thinking of getting my DH and DS tickets to the Mariners game that night at 7:10. If I've done my research correctly the stadium isn't too far from the Space Needle? What is the easiest safest way to get there. After the game they would be going back to the Mayflower ParK Hotel. Again how would they do that - safest and easiest. Now, my DD and I would be leaving the Space Needle and heading back to the hotel after dinner by ourselves. Is it pretty safe for us to get back to the hotel on our own?

Thanks again for any help you can give me with this.

as an aside: DD7 is getting her next scans done on friday -preventative check for (no) more cancer. :worried: i get a little anxious around scan time so i'm trying to stay distracted. hoping and praying all goes well.

dinseymath- hope your GM experiences the peace she derserves, and sending thoughts to your wonderful family as they endure this  our little group has had a few difficult medical situations going on. its nice to have support and good vibes from nice folks :grouphug: can't wait to meet FTF

Well wishes and good vibes for a great check-up for your daughter. :goodvibes

Today was not a great day in grandma-land. The doctor would like to cease most of her medications and alter her status to palliative. While we all thought we were prepared for this, it's still heartbreaking to hear the words and face the reality head on. My mom will be meeting with her siblings tomorrow before she gives the final decision to the doctor.

DH and I, too, know all about "scan anxiety." My doctors scheduled my next scan for two days before we leave for the cruise and the follow-up appointment when we get back. I rescheduled both appointments -I'd be a mess if I had the scan before we left, and couldn't see the doctor & get the results until we got back.

Karen ... prayers and good wishes that your scan goes well also. :goodvibes

If you are planning to have dinner at the Space Needle, check out http://www.restaurant.com/ - they oftentimes have good coupons.

Getting back to the Mayflower Park after the game is simplicity itself -- just buy a ticket, get on the light rail (there'll be a crowd of people), make sure you're on the side of the station where the light rail is heading towards Westlake Center, and take the light rail back to Westlake Center.

The one thing I'll warn you is it may be a bit of a stretch to get from the Space Needle to the game if your reservations are at 5:30--I'd reserve around 4:30, if you want to catch the game.

Getting from the Space Needle to the game, I'd recommend taking the monorail to Westlake Center, and then take the elevator down to the light rail. Take the light rail that is going towards the airport, and get off at the Stadium stop (in short, follow the herd.)

Enjoy Seattle! I moved to the area 5 years ago, and I'm really glad I did.

No matter how much you try, you're never really prepared for something like this. to you and your family.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandma. What a difficult decision for your family to have to make. I'm sure your grandma is comforted by having so much of her family near her right now.:grouphug:

Thank you for the well wishes. My April scan was stable (good news:thumbsup2), so I'm going to be optimistic about the one I'll have when we return from Alaska!

Just realized--I didn't answer your whole question. You and your daughter should be able to get back quite safely on the monorail to Westlake Center and the Mayflower Park, and after all, what's a Disney vacation without a monorail? :)

To all of our Alaska trip peeps who have been facing health challenges, or facing the difficulties of loved ones, I feel for you and I am praying for your situations. Please be sure to give yourself a little extra loving kindness during these difficult times. No matter how difficult the circumstances, you deserve it. I am wishing us all love, peace and hope for a brighter day.

We thought we would use a different Romanization when we got on the ship for announcements. The ancestral family home (you'll bring honor to us all, family shrine, and all that) has been giving us a colossal headache, and one of the Romanizations of our name is "Dang".

So we now call it That Dang House :).

When we get on the ship, we figure we'll ask to be announced as:

That Dang Family

and my parents will be announced as:

Those Dang In-Laws

:)

Thanks for the great laugh - love it!:rotfl2::rotfl::rotfl2:

Thanks for all of your suggestions. I have a $25 gift certificate from Restaurant.com that I paid $2 for to use at the Space Needle. Plus I signed up for free on their website for promotions and I should be getting a buy 1 get 1 free entree for my birthday before we leave!
I did realize we might be cutting it too close to get to the game. I feel like since we are there they should try to go, but it's going to be a crazy day and we have limited time in Seattle so it might not work out.

Thank you for the suggestions! Do you have any tips for getting the restaurant.com certificate for $2?

I can answer that one as I buy them for Milwaukee restaurants all the time. Wait until closer to the end of the month and there will be a code for 80% off. Just keep checking Google for a code. Once you sign up at restaurant.com for an account, you will get emails from them almost daily with the codes for discounts.

Sign up for restaurant.com's email newsletter and have patience--generally at least once every couple of weeks it goes down to 80% off.
