August 13, 2011 Med - Mickey's Marauding Mates

Well, I have spent HOURS this week watching flights. I did a little more research on the whole Iceland Air / Swiss Air thing. I don't think they will solve my problems because they have less luggage allowances than Air France! Iceland Air only allows ONE carry-on up to 13 Lbs for "economy" class!! :rotfl2: That is like MY PURSE!! :lmao: That's not gonna work for me!! Swiss Air says if it's a codeshare international flight (which from Dulles they codeshare with United) then you have to go by the other airlines luggage rules...well, sooo United charges $25 for the first bag & $35 I think for the 2nd...so forget any savings that they may have had by the time we pay for bags.
Isn't the first bag free for international flights on United? That's what I was assuming that most airlines give each passenger the first one free and charge for the second. But I am glad you bring this up, because it is an important consideration when comparing fares if one airline will charge and another will not.

I am with you; I want to get this settled so I can focus on details of our trip... like shore excursions and hotels. I feel like I can't even concentrate on that right now since I am obsessed with airfare. Our best price from Pittsburgh to BCN is $1200. Ironically that's Air France through CDG, but if I look at the direct from PIT to Paris, it's over $1500 r.t. That makes no sense to me.

Our best price overall is IAD to BCN for $970. That's not bad, it's only a 4 hour drive, but I am not sure if $600 minus hotel (1 or 2 nights before/after depending on times), gas and tolls make it worth the drive. I am waiting it out longer hoping either PIT or DC comes down. If PIT-BCN comes down to $1000, I think I will grab it, but I don't know if that's wishful thinking

According to the Fees section on kayak it looks like United charges REGARDLESS of domestic or international!!!

1st Bag: $25
2nd Bag: $35
3rd Bag: $100
Snackbox: $6-$7
Fresh Food Menu: $3-$9
Checked: $250
Cabin: $125
Cargo: See Unitedcargo.com
Per Family: $99 (age 5-11, 5-7 Non-stop Only)
Economy Plus: $9-$109

BTW, talk about making NO SENSE...Air France round trip Dulles to Paris is $1,649. Air France MULTI-CITY Dulles to Paris to Barcelona and home again is $1,203.:confused3 The $1,203 price is as of like 2 minutes ago. Earlier today it was $1,236. If it would drop another $80 - $85 I would grab it as that would get the price to where I need it to be for our miles to cover 2 of us.:headache:

As far as I know there is a beach at Villefranche so you don't need an excursion for that. It is walkable when you get off the tender. Maybe you could do a half day excursion and then spend some time at the beach. I've never been to the French Riviera but my parents have been quite a few times over the last few years and they said that there are some lovely beaches. They also said that Villefranche is a lovely little town so I might just explore the town itself and spend some time at the beach. I will probably change my mind quite a few times between now and then. The Passporter mentions a little tourist road train that goes around villefranche and I would definitely do this with the kids but I can't find it mentioned anywhere else:confused3.

I'm starting to think about other excursions but I really only want to do half days with the kids. When do you think DCL will update the excursions list? There are still no excursions listed for Palma:confused3 Looks like I'm gonna have to start researching:surfweb:

YAY! I also sorta thought there should be beaches near by but I think it is really ODD that DCL doesn't appear to offer any beach excursions. I also thought that the better beaches were usually further away from commercial ports (cleaner water) - but I guess if Villefranche is a tender port (which I didn't realize that it was) that they don't have the same skeevy docks & such going on. VERY good to hear...now on to research it!! :thumbsup2

WOW!! Back onto Page 3 in like 14 hours! :sad2:

I am now getting alerts from airfarewatchdog.com and farecompare.com along with kayak.com. I noticed that all of the "deals" or "sales" are for "winter travel" and some for "spring travel" so I am hoping that it's just still too EARLY to catch a good deal for summer. But the best rate I saw at the hotel we may book in Paris is very limited but it is non-refundable so I am still not booking. The next best rate is 20 Euro more...:sad2: I just wish I could book this stuff already and be DONE with it so I could focus on excursions. DH was under the impression that our Villefranche stop would include some sort of a beach. I looked thru last summers excursions & there were no beaches included there so I guess I need to do some independent research to see what's feasible there. Anybody else know anything about beaches on the French Riviera?! Why wouldn't DCL include one for an excursion if it was a good idea?! :confused3 DH was SHOCKED when I told him we'd probably do something that included a tour to Eze or something. :upsidedow I told him that Majorca would likely be our only beachy type stop & he was upset. I said WHERE did you think we were going when we booked a European cruise? It's not the Caribbean...I think he didn't realize where we were going! :rotfl:

It's also a quick train ride to Nice from Villefranche with a huge beachfront that looked great. Seems like that would be an option too. We are thinking about heading there.

Had a meeting this evening at the high school for parents of next years incoming Freshmen!! :headache: They have to start their course selections the first week of February for next year! I don't think I'm ready for this one!! He is my BABY!!:littleangel: HOW can he be starting high school already!? :confused3 How can this BEEEE!?:sad1:

Been packing DS up for his travel meet...it's gonna be another busy weekend!! I have to drop him at the pool tomorrow around 4:45. DH and I are just driving up on Saturday morning for the day and will spend Saturday night there as he swims again late on Sunday. We'll be home Sunday night then...

Well, best price on airfare today was $1,203! I just need it to drop another $28 pp before I can cover 2 of us!! This is sooo frustrating!

Dropped DS off awhile ago for his travel meet. Tomorrow is going to be a LONG day. There is a distance session from 10:30-3:10. He is swimming the 1000 Free but won't swim until around 1:30. Then the afternoon session starts immediately after that. He is swimming 3 more events but the first one isn't until 6:30. Then 7:30 then not until 9:00 for his 200 IM!! OY! He will be sitting there for about 10 hours!! (And so will WE!) :headache: It will be a CRAZY long day!! :sad2:

OK, off to a ski trip planning meeting with the other Moms going on our ski trip next weekend...

Booked our Airfare!!!!! It finally went down below $1,200. Before this week, I think the lowest fare we could find was $1,297 for a one-stop (through Toronto on Air Canada). We are flying Pittsburgh-Athens and then Barcelona to Pittsburgh. Still need to book our Athens-Barcelona fare but that's another story for another day. Today, the fare was almost exactly $1,100 per person. While that's still a couple hundred bucks more than I would LIKE to pay, I pulled the trigger because it's been so much higher than that for months and months I didn't want to take the chance that this was our only opportunity. Will keep monitoring in case it goes down a bunch and we will pay change fee but for now, we are booked. Unfortunately, it's on Useless Air again. Hope we don't have a repeat of our trip last year, but this time we allowed for SIX hours in Philly instead of four. Hope that's enough.

Well...crap. I didn't realize that the museums in Florence will all be closed on the day we are there. i really - REALLY - wanted to arrange tix to see David. Sooooo disappointed about this after our disappointing visit to Florence last summer. Gotta figure out what we are going to do there now as we planned it "on our own" but with museums being closed.....

 Me too, me too!! I JUST finished & am late now to head up to PA for DS's meet! :headache: BUT, felt it had to be done NOW!! I had been watching / comparing leaving here on Fri. night, Sat. night & Sun. night & adjusting which day we went to Barcelona as well as checking which day to come home after the cruise. Well, so this morning the price to leave here on Sun. night 8/6 & arr. in Paris on Mon. morning and then go to BCN on Friday the 12th and fly home on Mon. 8/22 after the cruise was down to $1,173!!! My TARGET price was $1,175 so I took it as a sign!! All on Air France...direct to Paris from Dulles. Including the hop to BCN I guess I shouldn't complain huh?! IT'S OFFICIAL NOW!! OK...must RUN - am late for the meet!!! :scared1:

That's great news! :cheer2: I'm so glad you finally got booked. Now you can start planning the rest of your trip!:dance3:

I'm just home from a lovely night away with my girlfriends. It was very relaxing!

That's a shame. Is there any particular reason why they are closed?

So Jeff, do you know what's going on with the museums in Florence? How did you even find out such a thing?! I am really sorry that's happening to you!! I don't know what we're doing in that port but wasn't thinking of going that far...either Pisa / Lucca or Cinque Terre...it's TBD. I hope you can find reasonable flights now from Athens to Barcelona. I also was afraid that they would start spiking & going up...this is the first time in a LONG time that I've seen them them under $1,250-$1,300 so I felt I should jump on them. Of course I will drive myself crazy by still watching them to see if I did the right thing!!:rotfl:

I am just excited now that I can present the hotel options to DH in the next few days & we can book those. Our flight from Paris to Barcelona is at 9:35 in the morning - so we arrive at BCN around 11:15. Anybody have an idea how long it will take to clear customs & get into the city? Someone once mentioned to me that Air France has a shuttle into Paris...I need to check on that too. But so I was thinking it will probably be early afternoon by the time we get to a hotel...the Novotel might be a good choice for us for that one night...cheap for an overnighter, rooftop pool, near shopping, view of Sagrada Familia. :confused3 Then I think for the 2 nights after the cruise we'll book the Hotel Jazz. Now to figure out Paris!

Kelly - glad you got a little break! Where did you go?! Was it like a spa thing or something?

So Jeff - this meet that DS went to up in PA was in a REALLLY impressive facility... It was this GIGANTIC high school that apparently has 4,000 students. 1,000 in each grade...and a principal for each grade!! Meanwhile, this was just a beautiful campus / school. There were multiple gyms and the pool was really nice. If all PA schools get that much funding then I'd say you've got a good thing going for your kiddos! Our schools do not have their own pools - we have to rent lane time at public pools just like our private swim club. Anyway, DS had a great time on the meet - said he hopes they go again next year! I just got home from picking him up. He had some great swims too - we were thrilled for him as he's really just a mediocre swimmer - he did the 1000 Free for the first time in a meet & got a BB time on the National Time Standards chart. He also dropped 1.5 seconds on his 50 Free and got the BB time for that too. Baby steps!! :goodvibes He got 2 other times in events he didn't have times in and he dropped time in 3 others. :thumbsup2 I locked my keys in the car on Saturday afternoon & had to call a locksmith. :headache: I felt so stupid. :sad2:

Congrats on booking air! How nice to be able to focus on hotels and port excursions now!

Still watching for air from Pittsburgh for June. It's still running around $1200 and also keeping an eye on DC (which is lower) and Cleveland which has been running higher. Actually found rt from Pgh to Venice for $750! Trying to talk DH into that since I would love to go to Venice. But he is reluctant considering the $750 fare involves 3 flights/ 2 connections and then add to that another flight to get to Barcelona.

Have fun planning! And by the way, just found Jeff's trip report from last year's trip. Great reading with a lot of useful information!

:headache: DOH!!! DS came home last night with a hacking cough & sounded a little hoarse. I figured he'd just been talking a lot with the other kids on the bus ride home from the meet & that he'd be fine today after some rest. Well so then this morning he felt a little sick he thought. He wanted to gargle with salt water...the cough was persistent so we did the salt water thing, I gave him some Mucinex DM and a couple of Advil and he seemed to perk up. He was a little mopey but everytime I asked if he needed anything else he said no, he was fine. Then this evening he got the chills...couldn't get warm...I took his temperature awhile ago & it was like 102.6!!! :scared1: This is his last week of the semester!! He has final exams every day!! Tomorrow was supposed to be Geometry & English!! Wed. is Spanish! THURSDAY is the big high school math assessement for the semester and FRIDAY we were to leave to go on our big ski weekend in the afternoon. The one in the big house with all the other families! The one we paid $1,000 for and already bought 3 days of lift tickets!! I am SOOO paranoid that we're ALL gonna get this BEFORE THE END OF THE WEEK!! It's a flu that's been going around & it seems that it's lasted about a week for everyone I know that's had it!! :sad2: OMG. This is NOT GOOD! I don't know HOW he will get these exams made up!! :headache:

Meanwhile I nearly whacked my index finger off tonight making dinner...it's throbbing & I need to go change the bandage again as I see it bleeding thru again. :headache: NOT having a good day!!

Well, so we lucked out this morning in that school was canceled because we had freezing rain, sleet, snow & ice over night!! An extra day for DS to recouperate. He got up a little after 6:00 & his temp was down to like 101.4 (better than 102.something). I gave him some more cough stuff & a couple of Advil & he went back to bed for about 2 1/2 hours. When he got up he gargled with his salt water & said that he felt a little better. I have been checking his temp again every 2 hours all day since. It's been down under 100 even after the Advil wore off so I am hopeful. He had pancakes for breakfast & chicken soup for lunch... He's currently laying back down for a little nap which is a good thing I guess. I sure hope the fever stays away so he can go to school tomorrow. I don't know what this unscheduled day off does to their schedule (he has a rotating class schedule - so he has 7 classes but only 5 per day so it's different every day & when they miss a day it messes it up). I just don't want him missing final exams!! The last day of the semester is Friday! There is no school on Monday as it's a professional day for the teachers to post grades. He HAS to be there!! :headache: Please cross your fingers that our flu shots have kept this to a 24 hour minimum & that he can go tomorrow. :worship:

Meanwhile I booked our hotels for Barcelona today!!:woohoo: I booked the Novotel for the one night pre-cruise (perhaps we'll see you there Kelly) and the Hotel Jazz for the 2 nights after the cruise! Both are non-refundable rates...of course they priced them out for me in USD but then said that is subject to change depending on the exchange rate at the time of travel.:headache: So it was 109 euro ($145 USD) for the Novotel including breakfast and $414 USD for the Hotel Jazz. Now to finish Paris....:rolleyes1

I believe I read on the DCL site - when I was looking at excursions - that museums are closed on Sundays. Certain excursions don't go in Florence on the 7 night cruises because of this. I also have a cousin - Stefano - in Florence who is a facebook friend and he confirmed this for me. Really wanted to see David this time. Oh well Going to have to go back!

My daughter is also a B swimmer - actually still just on the edge of B times for some events and is an "all times" swimmer for many more. She has only been swimming seriously for 2 years now - before that her teams were less than stellar coaching-wise. But she is really having a good year this year and has moved up the ladder and hopes to have some BB times by the end of long course season.

We may stay at the Novotel the night before the cruise also. We are still deciding on our flight from Athens - and it is looking like it will be a later afternoon flight so we will only need a room for a few hours (literally) since we arrive in BCN around 5:30 p.m. and then off to the cruise the next morning. We did our fancy schmancy Barcelona trip last year, staying at the Hotel Arts. Wanna save the $$$ and stay somewhere nicer in Athens.

We had a 2 hour delay for school this morning as there was a bit of an ice storm early this morning. Snow supposed to start a bit tonight - but I think it's just a dusting.

Heading to Disney World this weekend with my oldest daughter (the swimmer) for a daddy-daughter weekend! Looking very forward to 2 1/2 days of running around the parks on a slow crowd weekend.

WOW - you are making me sooo jealous with all your trips!

Since you won't be in Barcelona for very long on that one night have you considered booking the Marriott at the airport? It is reasonably priced and has a shuttle option to the port!! That might save you some schleping around to just stay out there. :confused3 That was my plan if we were to end up on a later flight. Since we're only staying for 2 nights after the cruise we decided to try to get there as early in the day as we could which is why I decided to book in town...

I have a feeling that DS will be staying home again tomorrow. His temp hovered at 99.something pretty much all day but I can tell he's mopey. I mean that's a LOT better than 102 but still... I just hope he's ready to go back by Thursday for that math assessment. The other tests can be made up on Friday...but that's IT - that's the last day. And now I think they're calling for more bad weather on Thurs/Friday. DOH!! It took us forever to bust thru all the ice out there today. I couldn't get thru it with the shovel so I took a rubber mallet out & was BEATING the sidewalk & driveway trying to crack it! :rotfl: Then DH came out with a crowbar & started trying to scrape thru it. It was crazy thick!!

Hi Jeff, Are we not in La Spezia on Monday and not Sunday?? We leave Barcelona on Saturday, Sunday will then be Villefranche and then Monday will be La Spezia. I hope I have this right.

Enjoy your daddy/daughter trip. I did this with my Dad before I got married. it was great! He took me away to see his favourite football team play!

When I was away with the girls were just stayed at a holiday home that belonged to one of the girls parents.. We had a very relaxing time, lovely food and lots of wine!

We'll see you at the Novotel:thumbsup2
