We arrived at Vero Beach . How beautiful!! As we were walking to check in DD and I saw this great big red crab on the porch. I made the comment that it was just like Disney to have animated touches to greet you....guess again..it was a real crab!! He just sort of walked around the porch minding his own buisness. How funny. We had a beautiful room on the 3rd floor. We walked around the resort and then went to dinner at Shutters. Great dinner.....YUM!!! After dinner we walked down to the ocean and collected shells and walked in the water. We were tired so we rented a movie from the store in the lobby and borrowed a game from Ebb and Flow and stayed in the room . We had a nice quiet restful evening. The next morning we had a message on the phone saying that the resort would everyone to take the furniture off the veranda and bring it into the room because of high wind warnings. We did that and then we headed down for breakfast. After breakfast we went to the pool where DH and DD enjoyed the water slide and DD and DS and I enjoyed the pool and the sunshine. Around 1:00 we noticed that the lifeguards were picking up the lounge chairs and the umbrellas when people left. Hmmmm DH asked on of the lifeguards and he said that they had been instructed to bring in everythin from the pool that could "fly". DH asked if they had any other info about Charley. He said that they were just talking precautions for the wind. We left the pool a few hours later and noticed that the rocking chairs and potted plants etc had been taken away.....now we were getting a littel nervous. We went back up to our rooms and again there was a message on the phone saying that all furniture needed to be taken in. We watched the news and saw that Charley was heading for Orlando!!! YUCK!! We had a nice early dinner at Sonya's GREAT food, great people working. The restaurants were very very busy as everyone was staying in the resort and not going outside or to town. I am glad we ate early. since they had canceled the campfire and other outside activities we again rented a movie and went up to our room. The weather got windy and we had a lot of rain and lightning but that was all of Charley we saw. Sat morning we went to the beach the waves were quite a big bigger than they had been on Friday. We checked out and drove to Disney not knowing what we would find. The ride to Orlando was terrible!! Houses without shingles, windows, roofs etc. The signs along the roads had been blown down and the metal poles had been broken off. Pieces of signs were everywhere!! DD noticed that all the pool encloseures from the houses had been blown away. Trees were down everywhere and the traffic lights were not working. We also found out that all the tolls were not being collected. I had not even thought about that. If people evacuated the toll lines would have been huge from them coming back. DD was relieved to see the Walt Disney World sign was ok. We arrived at POR at 3:00 and waited for about and hour to check in. The lines were quite long. We were told that our rooms were not ready and we would have to wait. The poor cast member looked so tired. She told us she had been working all night and had not been home yet. She also said that the hotel was PACKED as the airport was closed and they had brought all the people from Fort Wilderness over to stay. We walked around the ground of the hotel and noticed quite a few trees down and the water was very very high. We had dinner at Boatwright's (we had PS for 6:00) and after dinner we checked back and our rooms were ready. We had room 8020 and 8019 . The rooms were beautiful and they were all newly referbished. Since the pools were not open and DTD was closed we stayed in the room and watched the olympics. Sunday Animal Kingdom was still closed and the pools were not open (no water crafts either) We went to MGM and had a great time. We talked to alot of people from Orlando who had come to the parks to escape the heat since they had no electric (air conditioning)no ice, no food etc. I felt terrible as we had all the above......... We also talked to many, many cast members who were in the same boat. Although some of them had terrible damage to their homes etc they all were so happy. I can't believe they were working. One cast member told me she dropped her kids off at the park in the morning so they could eat and enjoy the parks and she would join them until the parks closed. School in Orange County (Orlando) didn't open up until Aug 24th!! I will continue this later....Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom and DTD!!!

Thanks for your informative trip report.:) We left early Friday morning (13th) to head back home, so we missed Hurricane Charley. I am glad you are safe, sorry to hear the damage that was done by it.:(
Look forward to reading more about your trip.:)

Wow! How frightening. Was the entire area just a wreck? How did the theme parks look?
