Audio announcements in your stateroom

You're right, there do seem to be some announcements that go to every cabin, and some that are only in public areas. However, I think covering the speaker is a bad idea. On our last cruise, the captain made announcements (that we heard in our cabin) pertaining to bad weather and a missed port, and other valuable information that passengers should hear.

The only time I have heard an announcement in the cabin was about 2 AM when there was a fire on board (December 2001).

That's exactly the reason passengers shouldn't block out the speakers.

I want to clarify that I was not advocating that people actually block their speaker with napkins in my original post. I had just seen that tip in another thread and it reminded me that we hadn't heard many announcements on our speaker. It's great to hear about other's experiences. Does anyone know if there is a policy about which announcements are sent to which speakers?

Maybe it's just me but I enjoyed being woken up by Andy's (the cruise director) voice!

I loved his accent and could have listened all day!

The Cruise Director mentioned that this would be the last time announcements would be herad on the cabin speakers unless there was some emergency. He also said you could turn your TV on to channel 10 when you hear the chimes in the hallway speakers if you wanted to hear the announcement. Unfortunately, by the time you turn the TV on, you miss the first part of whatever is being annnounced.

Request for new feature from DCL: A switch of some sort to disable or enable non-emergency announcements being heard on your cabin speaker at the guest's choice.

Only in cabin announcements I remember on the Magic were the safety drill the first day, immigration in St Thomas, and on the last day. I seem to recall the annoucements cutting in on every TV channel if the TV was on, and trust me, my kids always had the TV on if we were in the cabin.

On our embarkation day there was an announcement that stated general announcements would not be heard in the staterooms out of respect for napping children, etc... that the only time we'd be hearing an announcement in our stateroom would be if it were very important.

Honestly I wish there were a switch we could flip to hear them in our room if we wanted.

I didn't hear that part, wish I'd have known, but at least I know for next time.

I really wouldn't cover the speakers. What if there was an emergency in the middle of the night or at any time for that matter? You wouldn't hear it!

We just got back on the 27th. After the fire drill the first day, they announced that messages would not be broadcast the rest of the week inside the cabins unless it was an emergency notification for something.

They held true to their word. Never heard an announcement except in the halls.

Boy, you learn something new every day. I, too, never knew about tuning into channel 10. I was always the silly person opening the door to the hallway sticking their head out to listen to the announcements. A couple of times we were lucky enough to be sitting on the verandah and we could overhear the announcements coming from deck 9.

But I do like the idea of being able to switch on and off the speakers in our room.

We've been on six cruises and I never knew about using the TV. We also always ran to the door. Live and learn!
